1 "O God of my fathers and Lord of mercy, who hast made all things by thy word,	1 Dio dei padri e Signore di misericordia, che con la tua parola hai fatto l'universo
2 and by thy wisdom hast formed man, to have dominion over the creatures thou hast made,	2 e con la tua sapienza hai formato l'uomo, perché domini sulle creature fatte da te,
3 and rule the world in holiness and righteousness, and pronounce judgment in uprightness of soul,	3 governi il mondo con santità e giustizia ed eserciti il giudizio con animo retto,
4 give me the wisdom that sits by thy throne, and do not reject me from among thy servants.	4 dammi la sapienza che siede accanto ai tuoi troni, e non mi escludere dal numero dei tuoi servi,
5 For I am thy slave and the son of thy maidservant, a man who is weak and short-lived, with little understanding of judgment and laws;	5 perché io sono tuo servo e figlio della tua serva, uomo debole, di breve durata e incapace di comprendere la giustizia e le leggi.
6 for even if one is perfect among the sons of men, yet without the wisdom that comes from thee he will be regarded as nothing.	6 Per quanto uno tra i figli degli uomini sia perfetto, se gli manca la sapienza che viene da te, come un nulla sarà considerato.
7 Thou hast chosen me to be king of thy people and to be judge over thy sons and daughters.	7 Tu mi hai scelto re del tuo popolo e giudice dei tuoi figli e figlie;
8 Thou hast given command to build a temple on thy holy mountain, and an altar in the city of thy habitation, a copy of the holy tent which thou didst prepare from the beginning.	8 mi hai ordinato di edificare un tempio sul tuo santo monte, un altare nella città della tua dimora, immagine della tenda santa che avevi preparato da principio.
9 With thee is wisdom, who knows thy works and was present when thou didst make the world, and who understand what is pleasing in thy sight and what is right according to thy commandments.	9 Con te è la sapienza, che conosce le tue opere, che era presente quando facevi il mondo; essa conosce ciò che è accetto ai tuoi occhi e ciò che è conforme ai tuoi comandamenti.
10 Send her forth from the holy heavens, and from the throne of thy glory send her, that she may be with me and toil, and that I may learn what is pleasing to thee.	10 Invia la tua sapienza dai santi cieli, mandala dal trono della tua gloria, perché si affatichi assistendomi e io possa conoscere ciò che ti è accetto.
11 For she knows and understands all things, and she will guide me wisely in my actions and guard me with her glory.	11 Essa infatti, che tutto conosce e comprende, mi guiderà con saggezza nelle mie azioni e mi custodirà nella sua gloria.
12 Then my works will be acceptable, and I shall judge thy people justly, and shall be worthy of the throne of my father.	12 Allora ti saranno gradite le mie opere, governerò il tuo popolo rettamente e sarò degno del trono di mio padre.
13 For what man can learn the counsel of God? Or who can discern what the Lord wills?	13 Quale uomo infatti può conoscere il disegno di Dio? o chi può immaginare che cosa vuole il Signore?
14 For the reasoning of mortals is worthless, and our designs are likely to fail,	14 Timidi sono i ragionamenti dei mortali e incerti i nostri pensieri;
15 for a perishable body weighs down the soul, and this earthy tent burdens the thoughtful mind.	15 perché un corpo corruttibile appesantisce l'anima e la tenda terrena opprime la mente piena di sollecitudini.
16 We can hardly guess at what is on earth, and what is at hand we find with labor; but who has traced out what is in the heavens?	16 A stento indoviniamo le cose terrene e con fatica comprendiamo quelle che sono a portata di mano; ma chi potrà scoprire le cose celesti?
17 Who has learned thy counsel, unless thou hast given wisdom and sent thy holy Spirit from on high?	17 Chi avrebbe potuto conoscere il tuo consiglio, se tu non avessi dato la sapienza e inviato dall'alto il tuo santo spirito?
18 And thus the paths of those on earth were set right, and men were taught what pleases thee, and were saved by wisdom."	18 Così furono raddrizzati i sentieri di chi è sulla terra, gli uomini impararono le cose che ti sono accette e per mezzo della sapienza furono salvati.
