1 For thy immortal spirit is in all things.	1 Бо твій дух нетлінний у всьому.
2 Therefore thou dost correct little by little those who trespass, and dost remind and warn them of the things wherein they sin, that they may be freed from wickedness and put their trust in thee, O Lord.	2 Ось чому тих, що падають, ти караєш легко | і, нагадуючи те, чим згрішили, їх остерігаєш, | щоб вони, відвернувшись від зла, повірили, Господи, в тебе.
3 Those who dwelt of old in thy holy land	3 Колишніх мешканців твоєї землі святої ти зненавидів
4 thou didst hate for their detestable practices, their works of sorcery and unholy rites,	4 за їхні злочини преганебні, | за їхнє чарівництво, обряди нечестиві,
5 their merciless slaughter of children, and their sacrificial feasting on human flesh and blood. These initiates from the midst of a heathen cult,	5 за їхні немилосердні дітовбивства, | за учту, в якій вони споживали нутрощі, людське тіло і кров, | посвячені у таємному бенкетуванні;
6 these parents who murder helpless lives, thou didst will to destroy by the hands of our fathers,	6 родителів, убивників безпомічних дітей, | вирішив ти вигубити руками батьків наших,
7 that the land most precious of all to thee might receive a worthy colony of the servants of God.	7 щоб земля, яку ти над усі інші цінуєш, | прийняла гідних поселенців — дітей Божих.
8 But even these thou didst spare, since they were but men, and didst send wasps as forerunners of thy army, to destroy them little by little,	8 Тож їх, бо й вони люди, ти пожалів, | виславши перед твоїм військом шершнів, | щоб вони винищували їх поволі:
9 though thou wast not unable to give the ungodly into the hands of the righteous in battle, or to destroy them at one blow by dread wild beasts or thy stern word.	9 не те, щоб ти не міг у бою підкорити праведникам нечестивих, | чи то лютими звірями, чи то суворим словом умить їх стерти, —
10 But judging them little by little thou gavest them a chance to repent, though thou wast not unaware that their origin was evil and their wickedness inborn, and that their way of thinking would never change.	10 лише, караючи поволі, давав їм нагоду покаяння, | хоч відав добре, що їхній рід лукавий, | що їхня злоба — вроджена їм | і що думки їхні незмінні були б повіки, —
11 For they were an accursed race from the beginning, and it was not through fear of any one that thou didst leave them unpunished for their sins.	11 бо це було поріддя прокляте від початку. | Та не із страху перед кимсь дарував ти їм гріхи безкарно.
12 For who will say, "What hast thou done?" Or will resist thy judgment? Who will accuse thee for the destruction of nations which thou didst make? Or who will come before thee to plead as an advocate for unrighteous men?	12 Бо хто ж насмілився б сказати; «Що ти вдіяв?» | Або хто міг би протиставитись вирокові твоєму? | І хто міг би позивати тебе за знищення народів, яких ти сам створив? | Або хто міг би стати проти тебе в обороні розбещених людей?
13 For neither is there any god besides thee, whose care is for all men, to whom thou shouldst prove that thou hast not judged unjustly;	13 Справді немає, крім тебе, Бога, що за все дбаєш, | щоб ти мусів звітувати, що не судив несправедливо;
14 nor can any king or monarch confront thee about those whom thou hast punished.	14 ані царя чи якогось володаря, спроможного | кинути поглядом на тебе з домаганням рахунку за покараних тобою.
15 Thou art righteous and rulest all things righteously, deeming it alien to thy power to condemn him who does not deserve to be punished.	15 Ти, справедливий, усім керуєш по правді: | чужа бо твоїй могутності думка засуджувати | того, хто на кару не заслужив.
16 For thy strength is the source of righteousness, and thy sovereignty over all causes thee to spare all.	16 Твоя бо сила — справедливости основа, | а що ти над усім пануєш, то й щадиш усе.
17 For thou dost show thy strength when men doubt the completeness of thy power, and dost rebuke any insolence among those who know it.	17 Ти виявляєш силу, коли не вірять у потугу превелику; | у тих же, що зазнали її, бентежиш зухвальство.
18 Thou who art sovereign in strength dost judge with mildness, and with great forbearance thou dost govern us; for thou hast power to act whenever thou dost choose.	18 Та ти — Владика сили, судиш ласкаво | і провадиш нас вельми дбайливо, | бо коли тільки захочеш, — можеш.
19 Through such works thou has taught thy people that the righteous man must be kind, and thou hast filled thy sons with good hope, because thou givest repentance for sins.	19 Таким діянням ти навчив народ свій, | що праведник має бути чоловіколюбцем, | і розбудив в своїх дітей добру надію, | що за гріхи даєш покаяння.
20 For if thou didst punish with such great care and indulgence the enemies of thy servants and those deserving of death, granting them time and opportunity to give up their wickedness,	20 Бо коли ворогів дітей твоїх, і гідних смерти, | скарав ти так вирозуміло й поблажливо, | давши їм час і нагоду відвернутись від лукавства,
21 with what strictness thou hast judged thy sons, to whose fathers thou gavest oaths and covenants full of good promises!	21 то з якою ж обережністю судиш ти синів твоїх, | яких батькам з клятвою й заповітами | дав ти найкращі обітниці?
22 So while chastening us thou scourgest our enemies ten thousand times more, so that we may meditate upon thy goodness when we judge, and when we are judged we may expect mercy.	22 Тож коли нас караєш, то на ворогів наших висилаєш тисячі бичів, | щоб ми, коли судитимем, пам’ятали на твою доброту, | а коли нас судять, — надіялись на милосердя.
23 Therefore those who in folly of life lived unrighteously thou didst torment through their own abominations.	23 Ось чому тих, що жили свій вік неправедно в безумстві, | ти мучив їхнім власним мерзенством.
24 For they went far astray on the paths of error, accepting as gods those animals which even their enemies despised; they were deceived like foolish babes.	24 Вони бо дорогами блуду задалеко заблукали, | взявши за богів навіть між звірями останніх і найогидніших, | обмануті, наче нерозумні діти.
25 Therefore, as to thoughtless children, thou didst send thy judgment to mock them.	25 Тому, немов на хлоп’ят безглуздих, | наслав ти на них неповажну кару.
26 But those who have not heeded the warning of light rebukes will experience the deserved judgment of God.	26 Та ті, що їх не врозумила ота дрібна кара, | зазнають суду, що гідний Бога.
27 For when in their suffering they became incensed at those creatures which they had thought to be gods, being punished by means of them, they saw and recognized as the true God him whom they had before refused to know. Therefore the utmost condemnation came upon them.	27 А страждаючи від цих істот, гнівались | на тих, кого вважали за богів, мовляв, це вони карають їх; | допіру тоді, кого раніше зреклися знати, — | визнали за правдивого Бога; | тим то впав на них найважчий осуд.
