Proverbs 18

1 He who is estranged seeks pretexts to break out against all sound judgment.	1 Colui che vuol ritirarsi dall'amico cerca pretesti; ma sarà esecrabile in ogni tempo.
2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.	2 Lo stolto non accoglie le parole della prudenza, se tu non parli secondo quello che egli ha nel cuore.
3 When wickedness comes, contempt comes also; and with dishonor comes disgrace.	3 L'empio, giunto nel profondo dei peccati, disprezza, ma lo inseguono le ignominie e l'obbrobrio.
4 The words of a man's mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a gushing stream.	4 Le parole che vengon dalla bocca del saggio sono acqua profonda; è un torrente che inonda la fontana della sapienza.
5 It is not good to be partial to a wicked man, or to deprive a righteous man of justice.	5 Non sta bene aver riguardi alla persona dell'empio per sviare dalla verità nel giudizio.
6 A fool's lips bring strife, and his mouth invites a flogging.	6 Le labbra dello stolto s'impaccian nelle risse, e la sua bocca provoca litigi.
7 A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to himself.	7 La bocca dello stolto lo demolisce, e le sue labbra son la sua rovina.
8 The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels; they go down into the inner parts of the body.	8 Le parole della lingua doppia sembrar semplici, ma penetran nell'intimo delle viscere. Il timore abbatte il pigro, gli uomini effeminati patiranno la fame.
9 He who is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys.	9 Chi è molle e infingardo nel suo lavoro è fratello di chi dissipa quanto ha fatto.
10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.	10 Il nome del Signore è torre fortissima, a lei ricorre il giusto, e sarà in luogo sicuro.
11 A rich man's wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall protecting him.	11 I beni del ricco sono la sua città forte, son come valida muraglia intorno a lui.
12 Before destruction a man's heart is haughty, but humility goes before honor.	12 Prima della rovina il cuore dell'uomo s'esalta, e prima d'essere esaltato è umiliato.
13 If one gives answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.	13 Chi risponde prima d'avere ascoltato si mostra stolto e degno di confusione.
14 A man's spirit will endure sickness; but a broken spirit who can bear?	14 Lo spirito dell'uomo lo sostiene nella sua debolezza, ma lo spirito facile all'ira chi potrà sostenerlo?
15 An intelligent mind acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.	15 Il cuore prudente acquisterà la scienza, e l'orecchio dei saggi cerca la dottrina.
16 A man's gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.	16 Il regalo che fa un uomo gli apre la strada, gli fa largo dinanzi ai principi.
17 He who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.	17 Il giusto è il primo ad accusar se stesso; vien poi il suo amico e l'esamina.
18 The lot puts an end to disputes and decides between powerful contenders.	18 La sorte finisce le contese, e decide anche tra i grandi.
19 A brother helped is like a strong city, but quarreling is like the bars of a castle.	19 Il fratello aiutato dal fratello è come città forte, e i giudizi sono come le sbarre delle porte della città.
20 From the fruit of his mouth a man is satisfied; he is satisfied by the yield of his lips.	20 Col frutto della sua bocca l'uomo empirà il suo ventre, e i proventi dei suoi labbri lo sazieranno.
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.	21 Morte e vita sono in potere della lingua, chi ne terrà conto ne mangerà i frutti.
22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the LORD.	22 Chi ha trovato una buona moglie ha trovato una fortuna, e riceverà consolazione dal Signore. Chi ripudia una buona moglie caccia il bene, chi poi tiene un'adultera è stolto ed empio.
23 The poor use entreaties, but the rich answer roughly.	23 Il povero parla supplicando, e il ricco risponde con durezza.
24 There are friends who pretend to be friends, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.	24 L'uomo amabile e socievole sarà più amico d'un fratello.
