1 Maccabees 16

1 John went up from Gazara and reported to Simon his father what Cendebeus had done.	1 Jean monta de Gazara et avertit Simon son père de ce que Kendébée était en traind'accomplir.
2 And Simon called in his two older sons Judas and John, and said to them: "I and my brothers and the house of my father have fought the wars of Israel from our youth until this day, and things have prospered in our hands so that we have delivered Israel many times.	2 Simon appela alors ses deux fils les plus âgés, Judas et Jean, et leur dit: "Mes frères et moi,et la maison de mon père, nous avons combattu les ennemis d'Israël depuis notre jeunesse jusqu'à ce jour, et nosmains ont réussi à sauver Israël maintes fois.
3 But now I have grown old, and you by His mercy are mature in years. Take my place and my brother's, and go out and fight for our nation, and may the help which comes from Heaven be with you."	3 Maintenant je suis vieux, tandis que vous, par la miséricorde du ciel, vous êtes d'un âgesuffisant: prenez ma place et celle de mon frère et partez combattre pour notre nation, et que le secours du Cielsoit avec vous."
4 So John * chose out of the country twenty thousand warriors and horsemen, and they marched against Cendebeus and camped for the night in Modein.	4 Puis il choisit dans le pays 20.000 combattants et des cavaliers qui marchèrent sur Kendébéeet passèrent la nuit à Modîn.
5 Early in the morning they arose and marched into the plain, and behold, a large force of infantry and horsemen was coming to meet them; and a stream lay between them.	5 S'étant levés le matin, ils s'avancèrent vers la plaine. Et voici qu'une armée nombreusevenait à leur rencontre, fantassins et cavaliers, mais il y avait un torrent entre eux.
6 Then he and his army lined up against them. And he saw that the soldiers were afraid to cross the stream, so he crossed over first; and when his men saw him, they crossed over after him.	6 Jean prit position en face des ennemis, lui et sa troupe, et, voyant que la troupe craignait detraverser le torrent, il passa le premier. A cette vue, ses hommes à leur tour passèrent après lui.
7 Then he divided the army and placed the horsemen in the midst of the infantry, for the cavalry of the enemy were very numerous.	7 Il divisa la troupe (en deux corps) avec les cavaliers au milieu des fantassins, car la cavaleriedes adversaires était fort nombreuse.
8 And they sounded the trumpets, and Cendebeus and his army were put to flight, and many of them were wounded and fell; the rest fled into the stronghold.	8 Les trompettes retentirent et Kendébée fut mis en fuite avec son armée; beaucoup tombèrentfrappés à mort; ceux qui échappèrent s'enfuirent vers la forteresse.
9 At that time Judas the brother of John was wounded, but John pursued them until Cendebeus * reached Kedron, which he had built.	9 C'est alors que fut blessé Judas, le frère de Jean. Quant à Jean, il les poursuivit jusqu'à ceque Kendébée arrivât à Kédrôn qu'il avait rebâtie.
10 They also fled into the towers that were in the fields of Azotus, and John * burned it with fire, and about two thousand of them fell. And he returned to Judea safely.	10 Ils s'enfuirent jusqu'aux tours qui sont dans les champs d'Azôtos, que Jean incendia. 2.000d'entre eux succombèrent et il retourna en paix dans la Judée.
11 Now Ptolemy the son of Abubus had been appointed governor over the plain of Jericho, and he had much silver and gold,	11 Ptolémée fils d'Aboubos avait été établi stratège de la plaine de Jéricho, il possédaitbeaucoup d'or et d'argent,

13 His heart was lifted up; he determined to get control of the country, and made treacherous plans against Simon and his sons, to do away with them.	13 Son coeur s'enorgueillit; il aspira à se rendre maître du pays et formait des desseinsperfides contre Simon et ses fils pour les supprimer.
14 Now Simon was visiting the cities of the country and attending to their needs, and he went down to Jericho with Mattathias and Judas his sons, in the one hundred and seventy-seventh year, * in the eleventh month, which is the month of Shebat.	14 Or Simon faisait une tournée d'inspection dans les villes du pays, soucieux de ce quiregardait leur administration. Il descendit à Jéricho, lui et ses fils Mattathias et Judas, l'année 177, au onzièmemois qui est le mois de Shebat.
15 The son of Abubus received them treacherously in the little stronghold called Dok, which he had built; he gave them a great banquet, and hid men there.	15 Le fils d'Aboubos les reçut par ruse dans une petite forteresse, nommée Dôk, qu'il avaitbâtie. Il leur servit un grand banquet et cacha des hommes (dans le fortin).
16 When Simon and his sons were drunk, Ptolemy and his men rose up, took their weapons, and rushed in against Simon in the banquet hall, and they killed him and his two sons and some of his servants.	16 Lorsque Simon fut ivre ainsi que ses fils, Ptolémée se leva avec ses hommes et, prenantleurs armes, ils se précipitèrent sur Simon dans la salle du festin et le tuèrent avec ses deux fils et quelques-unsde ses serviteurs.
17 So he committed an act of great treachery and returned evil for good.	17 Il commit ainsi une grande perfidie et rendit le mal pour le bien.
18 Then Ptolemy wrote a report about these things and sent it to the king, asking him to send troops to aid him and to turn over to him the cities and the country.	18 Ptolémée en écrivit un rapport qu'il adressa au roi, afin de se faire envoyer des troupes desecours et de lui livrer les villes et la province.
19 He sent other men to Gazara to do away with John; he sent letters to the captains asking them to come to him so that he might give them silver and gold and gifts;	19 Il envoya d'autres émissaires à Gazara pour supprimer Jean, et manda par lettre auxchiliarques de venir auprès de lui pour qu'il leur donnât de l'argent, de l'or et des présents.
20 and he sent other men to take possession of Jerusalem and the temple hill.	20 Il en dépêcha d'autres pour prendre possession de Jérusalem et de la montagne dusanctuaire.
21 But some one ran ahead and reported to John at Gazara that his father and brothers had perished, and that "he has sent men to kill you also."	21 Mais quelqu'un, ayant pris les devants, avait annoncé à Jean, à Gazara, que son père et sesfrères avaient péri, et il dit: "Il a envoyé quelqu'un pour te tuer toi aussi."
22 When he heard this, he was greatly shocked; and he seized the men who came to destroy him and killed them, for he had found out that they were seeking to destroy him.	22 A cette nouvelle, Jean fut tout bouleversé; il arrêta les hommes venus pour le tuer et les mità mort, car il savait qu'ils cherchaient à le perdre.
23 The rest of the acts of John and his wars and the brave deeds which he did, and the building of the walls which he built, and his achievements,	23 Quant au reste des actions de Jean, ses combats et les exploits qu'il accomplit, les rempartsqu'il construisit et ses autres entreprises,
24 behold, they are written in the chronicles of his high priesthood, from the time that he became high priest after his father.	24 cela est écrit dans le livre des Annales de son pontificat depuis le jour où il devint grandprêtre après son père.
