1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.	1 Roboam se dirigió a Siquem, porque allí había ido todo Israel para proclamarlo rey.
2 And when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was still in Egypt, whither he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from Egypt.	2 Cuando se enteró Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat –que estaba todavía en Egipto, adonde había huido del rey Salomón– se volvió a Egipto.
3 And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and said to Rehoboam,	3 Lo mandaron llamar, y él se presentó con toda la asamblea de Israel. Entonces hablaron así a Roboam:
4 "Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke upon us, and we will serve you."	4 «Tu padre hizo muy penoso nuestro yugo. Alivia tú ahora la dura servidumbre y el penoso yugo que él nos impuso, y te serviremos a ti».
5 He said to them, "Depart for three days, then come again to me." So the people went away.	5 El les replicó: «Váyanse y vuelvan a verme dentro de tres días». Y el pueblo se retiró.
6 Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, "How do you advise me to answer this people?"	6 El rey Roboam fue a consultar a los ancianos que habían asistido a su padre Salomón, cuando este aún vivía, y les preguntó: «¿Qué respuesta me aconsejan dar a este pueblo?».
7 And they said to him, "If you will be a servant to this people today and serve them, and speak good words to them when you answer them, then they will be your servants for ever."	7 Ellos le hablaron así: «Si hoy te comportas como servidor de este pueblo, si te pones a su servicio y les respondes con buenas palabras, serán siempre tus servidores».
8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him.	8 Pero él desechó el consejo que le habían dado los ancianos, y fue a consultar a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y lo servían como asistentes.
9 And he said to them, "What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me, 'Lighten the yoke that your father put upon us'?"	9 Les preguntó: «Y ustedes, ¿qué aconsejan? ¿Qué debemos responder a este pueblo que me ha dicho: «Alivia el yugo que nos impuso tu padre?».
10 And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, "Thus shall you speak to this people who said to you, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, but do you lighten it for us'; thus shall you say to them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.	10 Los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le dijeron: «A ese pueblo que te ha dicho: «Tu padre nos impuso un yugo pesado, pero tú alívianos la carga», diles esto: «¡Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que la cintura de mi padre!
11 And now, whereas my father laid upon you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.'"	11 Si mi padre los cargó con un yugo pesado, yo lo haré más pesado aún; si él los castigó con látigos, yo usaré lonjas con puntas de hierro».
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king said, "Come to me again the third day."	12 Al tercer día, Jeroboam y todo el pueblo comparecieron ante Roboam, según lo que había indicado el rey cuando dijo: «Vuelvan a verme al tercer día».
13 And the king answered the people harshly, and forsaking the counsel which the old men had given him,	13 Pero el rey respondió al pueblo duramente; desechó el consejo que le habían dado los ancianos
14 he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, "My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions."	14 y, siguiendo el consejo de los jóvenes, les habló así: «Mi padre les impuso un yugo pesado, y yo lo haré más pesado aún; mi padre los castigó con látigos, y yo usaré lonjas con puntas de hierro».
15 So the king did not hearken to the people; for it was a turn of affairs brought about by the LORD that he might fulfil his word, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.	15 Así el rey no escuchó al pueblo, porque ese era el medio de que se valía el Señor para cumplir la palabra que él había dicho a Jeroboam, hijo de Nebat, por boca de Ajías de Silo.
16 And when all Israel saw that the king did not hearken to them, the people answered the king, "What portion have we in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David." So Israel departed to their tents.	16 Y cuando todo Israel vio que el rey no los había escuchado, el pueblo le respondió: «¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? ¡No tenemos herencia común con el hijo de Jesé! ¡A tus carpas, Israel! ¡Ahora, ocúpate de tu casa, David! Israel se fue a sus campamentos,
17 But Rehoboam reigned over the people of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah.	17 pero Roboam siguió reinando sobre los israelitas que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá.
18 Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was taskmaster over the forced labor, and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. And King Rehoboam made haste to mount his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.	18 El rey Roboam envió a Adoram, el encargado del reclutamiento, pero todos los israelitas lo mataron a pedradas. Y el mismo rey Roboam tuvo que subir precipitadamente a su carro y huir a Jerusalén.
19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.	19 Fue así como Israel se rebeló contra la casa de David hasta el día de hoy.
20 And when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. There was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.	20 Cuando todo Israel se enteró de que había vuelto Jeroboam, lo mandaron llamar a la asamblea y lo proclamaron rey de todo Israel. No hubo nadie que siguiera a la casa de David, fuera de la tribu de Judá.
21 When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.	21 Mientras tanto, Roboam llegó a Jerusalén y convocó a toda la casa de Judá y a la tribu de Benjamín –ciento ochenta mil guerreros adiestrados– para ir a combatir contra la casa de Israel y restituir el reino a Roboam, hijo de Salomón.
22 But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God:	22 Pero la palabra del Señor llegó a Semaías, un hombre de Dios, en estos términos.
23 "Say to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people,	23 «Di a Roboam, hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y a toda la casa de Judá, a Benjamín y al resto del pueblo:
24 'Thus says the LORD, You shall not go up or fight against your kinsmen the people of Israel. Return every man to his home, for this thing is from me.'" So they hearkened to the word of the LORD, and went home again, according to the word of the LORD.	24 Así habla el Señor: No suban a combatir contra sus hermanos, los israelitas; vuelvan cada uno a su casa, porque esto ha sucedido por disposición mía». Ellos escucharon la palabra del Señor, y tomó cada uno el camino de regreso, conforme a la palabra del Señor.
25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and dwelt there; and he went out from there and built Penuel.	25 Jeroboam, por su parte, fortificó Siquem, en la montaña de Efraím, y se estableció en ella. Luego salió de allí y fortificó Penuel.
26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, "Now the kingdom will turn back to the house of David;	26 Pero Jeroboam pensó: «Tal como se presentan las cosas, el reino podría volver a la casa de David.
27 if this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah."	27 Si este pueblo sube a ofrecer sacrificios a la Casa de Dios en Jerusalén, terminarán por ponerse de parte de Roboam, rey de Judá, su señor; entonces me matarán a mí y se volverán a Roboam, rey de Judá».
28 So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold. And he said to the people, "You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt."	28 Y después de haber reflexionado, el rey fabricó dos terneros de oro y dijo al pueblo: «¡Basta ya de subir a Jerusalén! Aquí está tu Dios, Israel, el que te hizo subir del país de Egipto».
29 And he set one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.	29 Luego puso un ternero en Betel y el otro en Dan.
30 And this thing became a sin, for the people went to the one at Bethel and to the other as far as Dan.	30 Aquello fue una ocasión de pecado, y el pueblo iba delante de uno de ellos hasta Dan.
31 He also made houses on high places, and appointed priests from among all the people, who were not of the Levites.	31 Jeroboam erigió templetes en los lugares altos, e instituyó sacerdotes de entre el común de la gente, que no eran hijos de Leví.
32 And Jeroboam appointed a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices upon the altar; so he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.	32 Además, celebró una fiesta el día quince del octavo mes, como la fiesta que se celebraba en Judá, y subió al altar. Esto lo hizo en Betel, donde ofreció sacrificios a los terneros que había fabricado. En Betel estableció a los sacerdotes de los lugares altos que había erigido.
33 He went up to the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and he ordained a feast for the people of Israel, and went up to the altar to burn incense.	33 El día quince del octavo mes –fecha que había elegido arbitrariamente –subió al altar que había levantado en Betel. Así celebró una fiesta para los israelitas, y subió al altar para quemar incienso.
