Genesis 42

1 When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, "Why do you look at one another?"	1 - Ora Giacobbe, avendo saputo che in Egitto si vendevano le vettovaglie, disse ai figliuoli: «Perchè non vi date pensiero?
2 And he said, "Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down and buy grain for us there, that we may live, and not die."	2 Ho saputo che in Egitto si vende il grano; andate dunque e comprate quel che ci bisogna, affinchè possiamo vivere, e non moriamo di fame».
3 So ten of Joseph's brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt.	3 Partirono dunque i dieci fratelli di Giuseppe per comprare il grano in Egitto,
4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph's brother, with his brothers, for he feared that harm might befall him.	4 restando Beniamino a casa, perchè Giacobbe non volle mandarlo, e disse agli altri fratelli: «[Non voglio] che in viaggio gli avvenga qualche disgrazia».
5 Thus the sons of Israel came to buy among the others who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.	5 Entrarono dunque in Egitto con gli altri che v'andavano a far compre; perchè v'era fame nella terra di Canaan.
6 Now Joseph was governor over the land; he it was who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brothers came, and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground.	6 Giuseppe era governatore dell'Egitto, ed il grano si vendeva alla gente secondo che egli ordinava. Avendo dunque i suoi fratelli profondamente inchinato,
7 Joseph saw his brothers, and knew them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke roughly to them. "Where do you come from?" he said. They said, "From the land of Canaan, to buy food."	7 egli li riconobbe; ma parlò a loro duramente come ad estranei, e domandò: «Di dove siete venuti?». Risposero: «Dalla terra di Canaan, per comperare gli alimenti necessari».
8 Thus Joseph knew his brothers, but they did not know him.	8 Quantunque però egli riconoscesse i fratelli, questi non riconobbero lui.
9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed of them; and he said to them, "You are spies, you have come to see the weakness of the land."	9 E ricordatosi dei sogni che aveva avuti un tempo, disse loro: «Siete spie, e siete venuti per vedere i punti meno difesi della regione».
10 They said to him, "No, my lord, but to buy food have your servants come.	10 Quelli risposero: «Non è così, signore; i tuoi servi son venuti per comprar da mangiare.
11 We are all sons of one man, we are honest men, your servants are not spies."	11 Siamo tutti figli di un sol padre: siamo venuti con buona intenzione, nè i tuoi servi ordiscono alcun male».
12 He said to them, "No, it is the weakness of the land that you have come to see."	12 Egli però rispose: «Non è vero; siete venuti per riconoscere i luoghi non fortificati di questo paese».
13 And they said, "We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more."	13 Ed essi: «Siamo dodici fratelli, e tuoi servi, figli di un sol uomo della terra di Canaan; il più piccolo è rimasto con nostro padre; un altro non è più».
14 But Joseph said to them, "It is as I said to you, you are spies.	14 Disse Giuseppe: «La cosa sta come ho detto; siete spie.
15 By this you shall be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here.	15 Ora vi metterò alla prova. Per la salute del Faraone, non uscirete di qui sinchè non venga il vostro fratello minore.
16 Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, while you remain in prison, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you; or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies."	16 Mandate uno di voi, che lo conduca qui; voi intanto rimarrete prigionieri sinchè non s'accerti se è vero o no quel che avete detto; se no, per la salute del Faraone, voi siete davvero spie».
17 And he put them all together in prison for three days.	17 Li fece dunque tenere per tre giorni in carcere.
18 On the third day Joseph said to them, "Do this and you will live, for I fear God:	18 Al terzo giorno, trattili dalla carcere, disse: «Fate quel che dico, e sarete salvi, giacchè temo Iddio.
19 if you are honest men, let one of your brothers remain confined in your prison, and let the rest go and carry grain for the famine of your households,	19 Se non venite per spiare, resti prigioniero un solo di voi; voi andate e portate alle vostre case il grano che avete comprato;
20 and bring your youngest brother to me; so your words will be verified, and you shall not die." And they did so.	20 ma conducetemi il vostro fratello più piccolo, ch'io possa verificare le vostre asserzioni, e non farvi morire». Fecero com'egli disse,
21 Then they said to one another, "In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he besought us and we would not listen; therefore is this distress come upon us."	21 e si dicevano l'un l'altro: «È giusto che ora soffriamo; perchè peccammo contro il nostro fratello, quando egli si raccomandava a noi, e noi, vedendo l'angoscia dell'anima sua, non gli demmo ascolto; per questo, ci è ora venuto addosso questa tribolazione».
22 And Reuben answered them, "Did I not tell you not to sin against the lad? But you would not listen. So now there comes a reckoning for his blood."	22 Ruben, uno di loro, disse: «Non vi dicevo io: - Non vogliate peccare contro questo figliuolo -? Ma non mi deste retta. Ecco che ora ci vien richiesto il suo sangue».
23 They did not know that Joseph understood them, for there was an interpreter between them.	23 Essi non sapevano che Giuseppe li intendeva, perchè aveva parlato loro per mezzo d'un interprete.
24 Then he turned away from them and wept; and he returned to them and spoke to them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.	24 Egli pertanto si ritirò per un poco, e pianse; poi tornò a parlare con loro.
25 And Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, and to replace every man's money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. This was done for them.	25 Ritenne Simeone, e lo fece legare alla loro presenza; indi comandò ai servi che empissero di grano i loro sacchi, rimettessero il danaro avuto da ciascheduno nel suo proprio sacco, e dessero a loro le cibarie per il viaggio. Così fu fatto.
26 Then they loaded their asses with their grain, and departed.	26 Or quelli, caricato il grano sui loro asini, partirono.
27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender at the lodging place, he saw his money in the mouth of his sack;	27 Ad una fermata, avendo uno d'essi aperto il suo sacco per dar da mangiare alla sua bestia, trovò alla bocca del sacco, il danaro,
28 and he said to his brothers, "My money has been put back; here it is in the mouth of my sack!" At this their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, "What is this that God has done to us?"	28 e disse ai fratelli: «Mi hanno reso il danaro; eccolo qui nel sacco». Stupefatti e turbati, si dicevano a vicenda: «Che cosa ci ha fatto Iddio?».
29 When they came to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had befallen them, saying,	29 Giunsero a Giacobbe loro padre nella terra di Canaan, e gli raccontarono quanto era loro accaduto, dicendo:
30 "The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us, and took us to be spies of the land.	30 «Il signore di quella terra ci parlò duramente, e credè che fossimo andati a spiare la provincia.
31 But we said to him, 'We are honest men, we are not spies;	31 Gli rispondemmo: - Siamo gente pacifica, e non tendiamo alcun'insidia.
32 we are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.'	32 Siamo dodici fratelli, figli d'un medesimo padre; uno non è più, ed il più piccolo è con nostro padre nella terra di Canaan. -
33 Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, 'By this I shall know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your households, and go your way.	33 Ed egli: - Ora riconoscerò se siete pacifici; lasciate qui presso di me uno di voi fratelli, prendete i generi necessari per le vostre case, andate,
34 Bring your youngest brother to me; then I shall know that you are not spies but honest men, and I will deliver to you your brother, and you shall trade in the land.'"	34 e poi conducetemi il vostro fratello più piccolo, affinchè io sappia che non siete spie, e possiate riprendere quello che è rimasto prigioniero, ed avere poi licenza di comprare quel che volete -».
35 As they emptied their sacks, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were dismayed.	35 Ciò detto, quando versarono il grano dai sacchi, trovarono legato alla bocca d'ogni sacco il proprio danaro, e ne furono tutti spaventati.
36 And Jacob their father said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and now you would take Benjamin; all this has come upon me."	36 Disse Giacobbe loro padre: «M'avete ridotto senza figli: Giuseppe non è più, Simeone è prigioniero, e mi volete portar via Beniamino; tutti questi malanni ricadono sopra di me».
37 Then Reuben said to his father, "Slay my two sons if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you."	37 Gli rispose Ruben: «Uccidi i due miei figliuoli, se non te lo riconduco; affidalo in mano mia, e te lo farò riavere».
38 But he said, "My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm should befall him on the journey that you are to make, you would bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol."	38 Ma egli: «Questo mio figliuolo non partirà con voi; il suo fratello è morto, ed egli è rimasto solo; se gli accadesse qualche avversità nella terra alla quale voi vi avviate, fareste scendere la mia canizie piangendo al soggiorno dei morti».
