1 Now Jacob heard that the sons of Laban were saying, "Jacob has taken all that was our fathers; and from what was our father's he has gained all this wealth."	1 Jacob apprit ce que disaient les fils de Laban: “Jacob, disaient-ils, a pris tout ce qu’avait notre père, il a fait sa fortune aux dépens de notre père.”
2 And Jacob saw that Laban did not regard him with favor as before.	2 Jacob vit bien à la tête de Laban qu’il n’était plus avec lui comme auparavant.
3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, "Return to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you."	3 Yahvé dit alors à Jacob: “Retourne dans le pays de tes pères, dans ta patrie, et je serai avec toi.”
4 So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah into the field where his flock was,	4 Jacob fit donc venir Rachel et Léa dans la campagne, près de son troupeau.
5 and said to them, "I see that your father does not regard me with favor as he did before. But the God of my father has been with me.	5 Il leur dit: “Je vois bien à la tête de votre père qu’il n’est plus avec moi comme autrefois, mais c’est le Dieu de mon père qui est venu à mon aide.
6 You know that I have served your father with all my strength;	6 Vous savez que je travaillais pour votre père de toutes mes forces,
7 yet your father has cheated me and changed my wages ten times, but God did not permit him to harm me.	7 et votre père se moquait de moi: il a changé dix fois mon salaire. Mais Dieu ne lui a pas permis de me faire du mal.
8 If he said, 'The spotted shall be your wages,' then all the flock bore spotted; and if he said, 'The striped shall be your wages,' then all the flock bore striped.	8 Quand il disait: ‘Les bêtes avec des points seront ton salaire’, toutes les brebis mettaient bas des bêtes avec des points. Quand il disait: ‘Les bêtes rayées seront ton salaire’, toutes les brebis mettaient bas des bêtes rayées.
9 Thus God has taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.	9 Ainsi Dieu a enlevé le troupeau à votre père et me l’a donné.
10 In the mating season of the flock I lifted up my eyes, and saw in a dream that the he-goats which leaped upon the flock were striped, spotted, and mottled.	10 “Une fois, pendant que les bêtes s’accouplaient, je vis en songe des béliers avec des raies, des points et des taches qui montaient sur les brebis.
11 Then the angel of God said to me in the dream, 'Jacob,' and I said, 'Here I am!'	11 Et l’ange de Dieu me dit en songe: ‘Jacob!’ Je répondis: ‘Me voici!’
12 And he said, 'Lift up your eyes and see, all the goats that leap upon the flock are striped, spotted, and mottled; for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you.	12 Il me dit: ‘Lève les yeux et regarde tous les béliers qui montent sur les brebis: ils ont des raies, des points et des taches; c’est que j’ai vu tout le travail que tu as fait pour Laban.
13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me. Now arise, go forth from this land, and return to the land of your birth.'"	13 Je suis le Dieu qui t’est apparu à Béthel, et tu m’as fait un vœu en répandant de l’huile sur une pierre dressée. Maintenant va! Sors de ce pays et retourne dans ton pays natal.’ ”
14 Then Rachel and Leah answered him, "Is there any portion or inheritance left to us in our father's house?	14 Rachel et Léa lui répondirent: “Avons-nous encore une part et un héritage dans la maison de notre père?
15 Are we not regarded by him as foreigners? For he has sold us, and he has been using up the money given for us.	15 Ne nous a-t-il pas traitées comme des étrangères, puisqu’il nous a vendues et que de fait il a mangé notre dot?
16 All the property which God has taken away from our father belongs to us and to our children; now then, whatever God has said to you, do."	16 Mais toute la richesse que Dieu a enlevée à notre père est à nous désormais et à nos fils: fais donc ce que Dieu t’a dit de faire.”
17 So Jacob arose, and set his sons and his wives on camels;	17 Jacob fit donc monter ses fils et ses femmes sur des chameaux.
18 and he drove away all his cattle, all his livestock which he had gained, the cattle in his possession which he had acquired in Paddan-aram, to go to the land of Canaan to his father Isaac.	18 Il emmena aussi tout son troupeau et tous les biens qu’il avait acquis - le troupeau qu’il s’était fait à Paddân-Aram. Il se mit en route vers Isaac, son père, au pays de Canaan.
19 Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole her father's household gods.	19 Comme Laban était parti pour tondre son troupeau, Rachel vola les idoles familiales de son père.
20 And Jacob outwitted Laban the Aramean, in that he did not tell him that he intended to flee.	20 Jacob, lui, cacha ses intentions à Laban l’Araméen. Il ne lui annonça pas son départ.
21 He fled with all that he had, and arose and crossed the Euphrates, and set his face toward the hill country of Gilead.	21 Il partit précipitamment avec tout ce qui était à lui, traversa le fleuve et se dirigea vers la montagne de Galaad.
22 When it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled,	22 C’est seulement le troisième jour qu’on annonça à Laban la fuite de Jacob.
23 he took his kinsmen with him and pursued him for seven days and followed close after him into the hill country of Gilead.	23 Laban prit ses frères avec lui et marcha sept jours à la poursuite de Jacob; il le rejoignit à la montagne de Galaad.
24 But God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream by night, and said to him, "Take heed that you say not a word to Jacob, either good or bad."	24 Là, durant la nuit, Dieu s’approcha de Laban l’Araméen dans un songe et lui dit: “Garde-toi bien de discuter avec Jacob, que ce soit avec ou sans menaces.”
25 And Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, and Laban with his kinsmen encamped in the hill country of Gilead.	25 Laban rejoignit Jacob. Comme celui-ci venait de planter sa tente sur la colline de Mispa, Laban planta la sienne dans la montagne de Galaad.
26 And Laban said to Jacob, "What have you done, that you have cheated me, and carried away my daughters like captives of the sword?	26 Laban dit à Jacob: “Qu’as-tu fait? Tu m’as caché tes intentions et tu as enlevé mes filles comme des captives de guerre.
27 Why did you flee secretly, and cheat me, and did not tell me, so that I might have sent you away with mirth and songs, with tambourine and lyre?	27 Pourquoi t’es-tu sauvé en cachette et m’as-tu trompé? Pourquoi ne m’as-tu pas averti? Je t’aurais fait une fête, je t’aurais reconduit avec des chants, des tambourins et des harpes.
28 And why did you not permit me to kiss my sons and my daughters farewell? Now you have done foolishly.	28 Tu ne m’as même pas laissé embrasser mes fils et mes filles. Tu t’es vraiment conduit comme un sot.
29 It is in my power to do you harm; but the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, 'Take heed that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad.'	29 Je pourrais te faire du mal, mais le Dieu de ton père m’a parlé cette nuit. Il m’a dit: Garde-toi de discuter avec Jacob, que ce soit avec ou sans menaces.
30 And now you have gone away because you longed greatly for your father's house, but why did you steal my gods?"	30 Cependant, si tu es parti pour retourner chez ton père parce que tu trouvais le temps long, pourquoi as-tu volé mes dieux?”
31 Jacob answered Laban, "Because I was afraid, for I thought that you would take your daughters from me by force.	31 Jacob répondit à Laban: “J’ai eu peur, je pensais que tu voudrais peut-être reprendre tes filles.
32 Any one with whom you find your gods shall not live. In the presence of our kinsmen point out what I have that is yours, and take it." Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.	32 Mais si tu trouves tes dieux ici chez quelqu’un, il sera mis à mort. Devant nos frères, regarde si j’ai ici quelque chose à toi, et reprends-le.” Jacob ne savait pas que Rachel avait volé les idoles.
33 So Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the tent of the two maidservants, but he did not find them. And he went out of Leah's tent, and entered Rachels.	33 Laban entra donc dans la tente de Jacob, puis dans celle de Léa et dans celle des deux servantes. Il ne trouva rien. Il sortit alors de la tente de Léa pour entrer dans celle de Rachel.
34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them in the camel's saddle, and sat upon them. Laban felt all about the tent, but did not find them.	34 Or Rachel, qui avait pris les idoles, les avait placées dans la selle du chameau et elle s’était assise dessus. Laban fouilla toute la tente, il ne trouva rien.
35 And she said to her father, "Let not my lord be angry that I cannot rise before you, for the way of women is upon me." So he searched, but did not find the household gods.	35 Rachel dit à son père: “Ne te fâche pas contre moi, mon seigneur, si je ne me lève pas devant toi, mais j’ai en ce moment ce qui arrive aux femmes.” Donc, il eut beau fouiller, il ne trouva pas les idoles.
36 Then Jacob became angry, and upbraided Laban; Jacob said to Laban, "What is my offense? What is my sin, that you have hotly pursued me?	36 Jacob se mit alors en colère contre Laban. Il lui dit: “Quel est mon crime? Quel est mon péché pour que tu t’acharnes ainsi contre moi?
37 Although you have felt through all my goods, what have you found of all your household goods? Set it here before my kinsmen and your kinsmen, that they may decide between us two.	37 Maintenant que tu as fouillé partout dans mes affaires, qu’as-tu trouvé qui t’appartienne? Montre-le ici, devant mes frères et tes frères, ils seront juges entre nous!
38 These twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your she-goats have not miscarried, and I have not eaten the rams of your flocks.	38 Voici vingt ans que je travaille pour toi: tes brebis et tes chèvres n’ont pas avorté, et je n’ai pas mangé les béliers de ton troupeau.
39 That which was torn by wild beasts I did not bring to you; I bore the loss of it myself; of my hand you required it, whether stolen by day or stolen by night.	39 Je ne t’ai jamais ramené une bête déchirée, c’est moi qui la remplaçais. Ce qui était volé de jour ou de nuit, tu me le réclamais.
40 Thus I was; by day the heat consumed me, and the cold by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes.	40 J’étais dévoré par la chaleur le jour, et par le froid la nuit, si bien que mes yeux en perdaient le sommeil.
41 These twenty years I have been in your house; I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and you have changed my wages ten times.	41 Voici vingt ans que je suis chez toi. Je t’ai servi quatorze ans pour tes deux filles et six ans pour le troupeau, et dix fois tu as changé mon salaire.
42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been on my side, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. God saw my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night."	42 Si le Dieu de mon père, le Dieu d’Abraham et le Dieu Redoutable d’Isaac, n’avait pas été avec moi, tu m’aurais maintenant renvoyé les mains vides. Mais Dieu a vu ma misère, il a vu les fatigues de mes mains, et la nuit dernière il s’est prononcé pour moi.”
43 Then Laban answered and said to Jacob, "The daughters are my daughters, the children are my children, the flocks are my flocks, and all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these my daughters, or to their children whom they have borne?	43 Laban répondit à Jacob: “Ces filles sont mes filles et ces garçons sont mes fils, ce troupeau est mon troupeau et tout ce que tu vois est à moi. Que pourrais-je faire aujourd’hui à mes filles et aux fils qu’elles ont mis au monde?
44 Come now, let us make a covenant, you and I; and let it be a witness between you and me."	44 Concluons donc une alliance tous les deux, et qu’elle soit comme un témoin entre moi et toi.”
45 So Jacob took a stone, and set it up as a pillar.	45 Alors Jacob prit une pierre qu’il dressa debout.
46 And Jacob said to his kinsmen, "Gather stones," and they took stones, and made a heap; and they ate there by the heap.	46 Puis Jacob dit à ses frères: “Ramassez des pierres!” Ils en ramassèrent et en firent un tas, et ils prirent un repas sur ce tas de pierres.
47 Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed.	47 Laban l’appela Yégar-Sahadouta, tandis que Jacob l’appelait Galéed.
48 Laban said, "This heap is a witness between you and me today." Therefore he named it Galeed,	48 Laban dit: “Ce tas de pierres est aujourd’hui témoin entre moi et toi.” C’est pourquoi on lui a donné le nom de Galéed ou Galaad.
49 and the pillar Mizpah, for he said, "The LORD watch between you and me, when we are absent one from the other.	49 On lui a donné également le nom de Mispa, car Laban avait dit: “Que Yahvé nous observe tous les deux quand nous serons loin l’un de l’autre.
50 If you ill-treat my daughters, or if you take wives besides my daughters, although no man is with us, remember, God is witness between you and me."	50 Si tu méprises mes filles et que tu prends d’autres femmes en plus de mes filles, ce n’est pas un homme comme nous, mais bien Dieu lui-même qui sera témoin entre moi et toi.”
51 Then Laban said to Jacob, "See this heap and the pillar, which I have set between you and me.	51 Laban dit encore à Jacob: “Regarde ce tas de pierres, et cette pierre dressée que j’ai mise entre moi et toi.
52 This heap is a witness, and the pillar is a witness, that I will not pass over this heap to you, and you will not pass over this heap and this pillar to me, for harm.	52 Ce tas de pierres est témoin, ainsi que la pierre dressée, que je ne passerai pas de ton côté au-delà du tas de pierres, et que toi tu ne passeras pas de mon côté, au-delà de ce tas de pierres et de cette pierre dressée, avec de mauvaises intentions.
53 The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us." So Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac,	53 Que le Dieu d’Abraham et le Dieu de Nahor soit juge entre nous.” Alors Jacob le lui jura par le Dieu Redoutable de son père Isaac.
54 and Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain and called his kinsmen to eat bread; and they ate bread and tarried all night on the mountain.	54 Jacob offrit un sacrifice sur la montagne et il invita ses frères à partager le pain. Ils partagèrent donc le pain et passèrent la nuit sur la montagne.
55 Early in the morning Laban arose, and kissed his grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them; then he departed and returned home.
