BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - In quel tempo non eravi re in Israele e la tribù di Dan andava cercando un possedimento per abitarvi, giacchè fino a quei giorni tra tutte le altre tribù non aveva ancora ottenuta la sua porzione.	1 In those days there was no king in Israel. Now in those days the tribe of Dan was in search of aterritory to live in, for until then no territory had fallen to them among the tribes of Israel.
2 I figli di Dan mandarono dunque cinque uomini tra i più forti di Saraa e di Estaol della loro stirpe e della loro famiglia per esplorare il paese ed esaminarlo minutamente, e dissero ad essi: «Andate ad esplorare il paese». Essendo venuti, cammin facendo, nella montagna di Efraim ed essendo entrati in casa di Mica, vi si riposarono.	2 From their clan the Danites sent five brave men from Zorah and Eshtaol to reconnoitre the country andexplore it. They said to them, 'Go and explore the country.' The five men came to the highlands of Ephraim, asfar as Micah's house, and spent the night there.
3 Inteso che ebbero la voce del giovane levita presso il quale erano ospitati, gli chiesero: «Chi ti ha condotto qua? Cosa fai qui? Perchè hai voluto venirvi?».	3 When they were near Micah's house, they recognised the voice of the young Levite and, going nearer,said to him, 'Who brought you here? What are you doing here? What is keeping you here?'
4 E avendo egli risposto: «Mica mi ha fatto queste e queste proposte e mi paga, perchè io gli faccia da sacerdote».	4 He replied, 'Micah has made certain arrangements with me. He pays me a wage and I act as hispriest.'
5 Lo pregarono che consultasse il Signore per sapere se avrebbero fatto un buon viaggio e se l'impresa sarebbe riuscita.	5 They replied, 'Then consult God, so that we may know whether the journey we are on wil lead tosuccess.'
6 Ottenuto il responso: «Andate in pace; il Signore guarda al vostro viaggio e alla via per la quale andate»,	6 The priest replied, 'Go in peace; Yahweh is watching over your journey.'
7 i cinque uomini se ne partirono e vennero a Lais e videro un popolo abitante colà senza timore alcuno, alla maniera dei Sidoni, sicuro e tranquillo, non avendo nemici, pieno di grandi ricchezze e lontano da Sidone e separato da ogni altro popolo.	7 The five men then left and, arriving at Laish, saw that the people living there had an untroubledexistence, according to the customs of the Sidonians, peaceful and trusting, that there was no lack or shortageof any sort in the territory, that they were a long way away from the Sidonians and that they had no contact withthe Aramaeans.
8 Fecero allora ritorno ai propri fratelli in Saraa e ad Estaol e, interrogati da loro che cosa avessero fatto, risposero:	8 They then went back to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol and, when the latter asked them, 'Whathave you to report?'
9 «Levatevi e andiamo colà, poichè abbiam visto una terra molto ricca e ubertosa; non lasciatevi sfuggir l'occasione, non perdete tempo; andiamo a possederla; non dovremo sostenere nessuna fatica.	9 they said, 'Up! we must go against them, since we have looked at the country and it is excellent,though you take no action! Waste no time in setting out and taking possession of the country.
10 Giungeremo a gente che sta sicura in un paese molto vasto, e il Signore ci darà un luogo, dove non mancherà nulla di ciò che la terra produce».	10 When you get there, you wil find a trusting people. The country is wide, and God has put it at yourmercy. It is a place where there is no lack of anything on earth.'
11 Partirono adunque dalla parentela di Dan, cioè da Saraa e da Estaol, in numero di seicento uomini armati di tutto punto.	11 From these places, consequently, from the clan of Danites at Zorah and Eshtaol, six hundred men setout equipped for war.
12 Salendo si arrestarono in Cariatiarim di Giuda, in un luogo che da quel tempo in poi fu chiamato "Campo di Dan" e si trova dietro a Cariatiarim.	12 They went up and camped at Kiriath-Jearim in Judah; and for this reason the place is stil cal ed theCamp of Dan today. It lies to the west of Kiriath-Jearim.
13 Quindi passarono sulla montagna di Efraim e venuti alla casa di Mica,	13 From there they entered the highlands of Ephraim and came to Micah's house.
14 i cinque uomini, che erano stati mandati prima a esaminare il paese di Lais, dissero ai loro fratelli: «Dovete sapere che in questa casa vi è un efod, dei terafim e un'immagine scolpita e fusa. Vedete voi quel che vi piace».	14 The five men who had been to reconnoitre the country then spoke to their brothers. 'Do you know',they said, 'that in these houses there is an ephod, some domestic images, a carved statue and an idol cast inmetal? So now work out what you have got to do!'
15 Avendo deviato un po' entrarono nella casa del giovane levita, che stava con Mica, e lo salutarono amichevolmente.	15 So, turning off the road, they went to the young Levite's dwelling, to Micah's house, and greeted himpeaceful y.
16 Frattanto i seicento uomini, armati com'erano, stavano innanzi alla porta,	16 While the six hundred men of the Danites, equipped for war, stood at the threshold of the gate,
17 mentre quelli che erano entrati nella casa del giovane si studiavano di togliere la scoltura, l'efod, i terafim e la statua di getto. Frattanto il sacerdote stava alla porta e i seicento fortissimi uomini erano in attesa non molto lontano.	17 the five who had been to reconnoitre the country went on into the house and took the carved statue,the ephod, the domestic images and the idol cast in metal; meanwhile the priest remained at the threshold of thegate with the six hundred men equipped for war.
18 Quelli che erano entrati presero la scoltura, l'efod, e la statua di getto. E il sacerdote disse loro: «Che cosa fate?».	18 These men, having entered Micah's house, took the carved statue, the ephod, the domestic imagesand the idol cast in metal. The priest, however, said, 'What are you doing?'
19 «Taci» risposero «e poni il tuo dito sopra la bocca e vieni con noi: così avremo in te un padre e un sacerdote. Non è meglio per te essere sacerdote in una tribù e famiglia d'Israele che nella casa di un solo uomo?».	19 'Be quiet,' they replied. 'Put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and become our father andpriest. Are you better off as domestic priest to one man, or as priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?'
20 A queste parole egli si acquietò e, preso l'efod, gli idoli e l'immagine scolpita, se ne andò con loro.	20 The priest was delighted; he took the ephod, the domestic images and the carved statue, and wentoff among the people.
21 Essendosi messi in cammino, preceduti dai fanciulli, dalle bestie da soma e da tutto ciò che aveano di più prezioso,	21 Resuming their original line of march, they set off, having put the women, children, livestock andbaggage out in front.
22 erano già lungi dalla casa di Mica, quando gli uomini che stavano in quella abitazione si misero a inseguirli con grandi clamori	22 They had gone some distance from Micah's house, when the people living in the houses near Micah'shouse raised the alarm and set off in pursuit of the Danites.
23 e ad alzare la voce dietro essi. Voltisi questi indietro, dissero a Mica: «Cosa vuoi? Perchè gridi?».	23 As they shouted after the Danites, the latter, turning about, said to Micah, 'What is the matter withyou, that you are shouting like this?'
24 E rispondendo egli: «Mi avete portato via i miei dèi, che mi ero fatti, e il sacerdote e quanto io avea; e domandate: - Che cosa hai? -»,	24 He replied, 'You have taken away my god, which I have had made, and the priest as wel . You aregoing away, and what have I got left? And now you ask me, "What is the matter?" '
25 i figli di Dan gli dissero: «Guardati bene dal parlare ancora contro di noi, se no, [alcuni dei nostri], irritati, verranno a te e perirai tu e tutta la tua casa».	25 The Danites said, 'Let us hear no more from you, or quick-tempered men may set about you, and thismight cost you your life and the lives of your family!'
26 E così continuarono l'intrapreso cammino, mentre Mica, visto che erano più forti di lui, se ne tornò a casa.	26 So the Danites went on their way; and Micah, seeing that they were the stronger, turned and wenthome.
27 I seicento uomini presero adunque il sacerdote e ciò che abbiamo detto e se ne vennero a Lais, a quel popol tranquillo e sicuro, e passatolo a fil di spada, diedero fuoco alla città,	27 So, having taken the god made by Micah, and the priest who had been his, the Danites marched onLaish, on a peaceful and trusting people. They put it to the sword and they burned down the town.
28 senza che nessuno venisse a portare soccorso, perchè erano assai lontani da Sidone e non avevano alleanza o commercio con nessun altro uomo. La città, situata nella regione di Roob, fu ricostruita di nuovo dai Daniti, che l'abitarono,	28 There was no one to come to the rescue, since it was a long way from Sidon and had no contact withthe Aramaeans. It lay in the valley running towards Beth-Rehob. They rebuilt the town and settled in it
29 chiamando città di Dan, dal nome del padre loro generato da Israele, quella città che prima si chiamava Lais.	29 and cal ed it Dan, from the name of Dan their ancestor who had been born to Israel; original y,however, the town had been called Laish.
30 Colà essi collocarono l'immagine scolpita e Gionata figlio di Gersam figlio di Mosè e i figli di lui furono sacerdoti nella tribù di Dan fino al tempo della loro cattività.	30 The Danites erected the carved statue for themselves. Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Moses, andhis sons after him were priests for the tribe of Dan til the day when the inhabitants of the country were carriedaway into exile.
31 E l'idolo di Mica restò presso di loro per tutto il tempo in cui la casa di Dio stette in Silo. In quei giorni non eravi re in Israele.	31 The carved statue made by Micah they instal ed for their own use, and there it stayed as long as thehouse of God remained at Shiloh.
