1 - In quello stesso tempo chiamò Giosuè i Rubeniti, i Gaditi e quei della mezza tribù di Manasse	1 At that time Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh
2 e disse loro: «Avete fatto tutto ciò che Mosè, servo di Dio, vi aveva ordinato, e a me pure avete in tutto prestato obbedienza;	2 and said to them: "You have done all that Moses, the servant of the LORD, commanded you, and have obeyed every command I gave you.
3 non avete abbandonato per tanto tempo, fino ad oggi, i fratelli vostri, osservando così il comando del Signore Dio vostro.	3 For many years now you have not once abandoned your kinsmen, but have faithfully carried out the commands of the LORD, your God.
4 Poichè dunque il Signore Dio vostro ha dato ai vostri fratelli la quiete e la tranquillità promessa, ritornatevene e andatevene alle vostre tende e nel paese che vi appartiene, assegnatovi da Mosè, servo di Dio, al di là del Giordano.	4 Since, therefore, the LORD, your God, has settled your kinsmen as he promised them, you may now return to your tents beyond the Jordan; to your own land, which Moses, the servant of the LORD, gave you.
5 Soltanto procurate di custodire diligentemente e di mettere in pratica il comandamento e la legge, che Mosè, servo di Dio, vi ha dato, di amare cioè il Signore Dio vostro, di camminare in tutte le sue vie, di osservare i comandamenti, aderendo a lui e servendolo con tutto il cuore e con tutta l'anima vostra».	5 But be very careful to observe the precept and law which Moses, the servant of the LORD, enjoined upon you: love the LORD, your God; follow him faithfully; keep his commandments; remain loyal to him; and serve him with your whole heart and soul."
6 Poi Giosuè li benedisse e li accomiatò, ed essi se ne tornarono alle loro tende.	6 Joshua then blessed them and sent them away to their own tents.
7 Mosè aveva dato a una metà della tribù di Manasse un territorio in Basan e perciò all'altra metà Giosuè assegnò la sua porzione tra gli altri suoi fratelli ad occidente del Giordano. Nel rimandarli alle loro tende Giosuè li benedisse	7 (For, to half the tribe of Manasseh Moses had assigned land in Bashan; and to the other half Joshua had given a portion along with their kinsmen west of the Jordan.) What Joshua said to them when he sent them off to their tents with his blessing was,
8 e disse loro: «Voi tornate alle vostre sedi carichi di beni e di ricchezze, d'oro, d'argento, di bronzo, di ferro e di svariate vesti: dividete coi vostri fratelli il bottino dei nemici».	8 "Now that you are returning to your own tents with great wealth, with very numerous livestock, with silver, gold, bronze and iron, and with a very large supply of clothing, divide these spoils of your enemies with your kinsmen there."
9 Fecero dunque ritorno i figli di Ruben, di Gad e della mezza tribù di Manasse, partendo da Silo, che è situata in Canaan, per entrare in Galaad, terra dei loro possedimenti che avevano ottenuto mediante Mosè, dietro il comando del Signore.	9 So the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the other Israelites at Shiloh in the land of Canaan and returned to the land of Gilead, their own property, which they had received according to the LORD'S command through Moses.
10 Giunti alle colline del Giordano, che son nella terra di Canaan, edificarono presso il Giordano un altare d'immensa grandezza.	10 When the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh came to the region of the Jordan in the land of Canaan, they built there at the Jordan a conspicuously large altar.
11 Quando i figli d'Israele ebbero inteso, da certuni che glielo avevano annunziato, che i figli di Ruben, di Gad e di mezza tribù di Manasse avevano eretto un altare nella terra di Canaan, sulle colline del Giordano, dirimpetto ai figli di Israele,	11 The other Israelites heard the report that the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had built an altar in the region of the Jordan facing the land of Canaan, across from them,
12 si raccolsero tutti in Silo per salire a muovere loro guerra;	12 and therefore they assembled their whole community at Shiloh to declare war on them.
13 e frattanto inviarono ad essi nella terra di Galaad Finees figlio del sacerdote Eleazaro,	13 First, however, they sent to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead an embassy consisting of Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest,
14 e con lui dieci capi scelti dalle singole tribù,	14 and ten princes, one from every tribe of Israel, each one being both prince and military leader of his ancestral house.
15 i quali, venuti ai figli di Ruben, di Gad e della mezza tribù di Manasse nel paese di Galaad, dissero:	15 When these came to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead, they said to them:
16 «Ecco quel che vi manda a dire il popolo del Signore: - Che significa questa trasgressione? Perchè avete abbandonato il Signore Dio d'Israele e vi siete fabbricati un altare sacrilego, staccandovi dal culto a lui dovuto?	16 "The whole community of the LORD sends this message: What act of treachery is this you have committed against the God of Israel? You have seceded from the LORD this day, and rebelled against him by building an altar of your own!
17 Vi sembra forse poca cosa la colpa commessa in Beelfegor, la cui macchia perdura in noi fino ad oggi e per la quale molti del popolo furono uccisi? -	17 For the sin of Peor, a plague came upon the community of the LORD.
18 E voi oggi avete abbandonato il Signore e domani l'ira sua infierirà su tutto Israele.	18 We are still not free of that; must you now add to it? You are rebelling against the LORD today and by tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community of Israel!
19 Che se stimate immonda la terra da voi posseduta passate nel paese dove sta il tabernacolo del Signore ed abitate in mezzo a noi, ma non allontanatevi dal Signore e dal nostro consorzio, edificando un altare che non sia quello del Signore Dio nostro.	19 If you consider the land you now possess unclean, cross over to the land the LORD possesses, where the Dwelling of the LORD stands, and share that with us. But do not rebel against the LORD, nor involve us in rebellion, by building an altar of your own in addition to the altar of the LORD, our God.
20 Acan, figlio di Zare, non trasgredì egli il comando del Signore e tuttavia l'ira del Signore non piombò su tutto il popolo di Israele? Eppure egli era un solo uomo, ma non fu il solo a perire per la colpa commessa!».	20 When Achan, son of Zerah, violated the ban, did not wrath fall upon the entire community of Israel? Though he was but a single man, he did not perish alone for his guilt!"
21 I figli di Ruben, di Gad e della mezza tribù di Manasse così risposero ai capi di quella ambasciata d'Israele:	21 The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh replied to the military leaders of the Israelites: "The LORD is the God of gods.
22 «Il fortissimo Dio Signore, il fortissimo Dio Signore lo sa, e anche Israele lo deve comprendere: Se noi abbiamo costruito questo altare coll'intenzione di prevaricare, egli ci abbandoni e ci castighi in questo istante;	22 The LORD, the God of gods, knows and Israel shall know. If now we have acted out of rebellion or treachery against the LORD, our God,
23 e se l'abbiamo fatto per immolarvi sopra olocausti, sacrifici e ostie pacifiche, ne chiegga egli la ragione e ne giudichi;	23 and if we have built an altar of our own to secede from the LORD, or to offer holocausts, grain offerings or peace offerings upon it, the LORD himself will exact the penalty.
24 ma l'abbiamo costruito colla precisa intenzione di dire: - Domani i figli vostri diranno ai nostri figli: "Che vi è di comune tra voi e il Signore Dio d'Israele?	24 We did it rather out of our anxious concern lest in the future your children should say to our children: 'What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?
25 Il Signore pose tra noi e voi, o figli di Ruben e di Gad, il fiume Giordano come confine e perciò non avete alcuna parte col Signore". - E con questo motivo i vostri figli allontaneranno i nostri dal timore del Signore. Perciò abbiamo meglio pensato	25 For the LORD has placed the Jordan as a boundary between you and us. You descendants of Reuben and Gad have no share in the LORD.' Thus your children would prevent ours from revering the LORD.
26 e ci siamo detti: - Costruiamoci un altare non per immolarvi olocausti o vittime,	26 So we decided to guard our interests by building this altar of our own: not for holocausts or for sacrifices,
27 ma perchè sia testimonio tra noi e voi, tra la nostra discendenza e la vostra, che vogliamo servire il Signore e rivendicare il diritto di offrire olocausti, vittime, ostie pacifiche e impedire che domani i vostri figli dicano ai nostri: "Voi non avete alcuna parte col Signore".	27 but as evidence for you on behalf of ourselves and our descendants, that we have the right to worship the LORD in his presence with our holocausts, sacrifices, and peace offerings. Now in the future your children cannot say to our children, 'You have no share in the LORD.'
28 Che se lo vorranno dire, i nostri risponderanno: "Ecco l'altare del Signore, costruito dai nostri padri non per i sacrifici e per gli olocausti, ma perchè fosse in testimonio tra noi e voi.	28 Our thought was, that if in the future they should speak thus to us or to our descendants, we could answer: 'Look at the model of the altar of the LORD which our fathers made, not for holocausts or for sacrifices, but to witness between you and us.'
29 Lungi da noi l'idea di allontanarci da Dio, di abbandonarne le vestigia, e di erigerci un altare per offrire olocausti, sacrifici e vittime, oltre l'altare del Signore Dio nostro, costruito dinanzi al tabernacolo di Lui" -».	29 Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD or to secede now from the LORD by building an altar for holocaust, grain offering, or sacrifice in addition to the altar of the LORD, our God, which stands before his Dwelling."
30 Udito ciò, il sacerdote Finees e i capi della missione che eran con lui rimasero soddisfatti e accolsero con animo lieto le parole dei figli di Ruben, di Gad e della mezza tribù di Manasse.	30 When Phinehas the priest and the princes of the community, the military leaders of the Israelites, heard what the Reubenites, the Gadites and the Manassehites had to say, they were satisfied.
31 Poi Finees, figlio del sacerdote Eleazaro, disse loro: «Ora sappiamo che il Signore è con noi, perchè non vi siete resi rei di questa prevaricazione e avete scampato i figli di Israele dalla mano del Signore».	31 Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest, said to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the Manassehites, "Now we know that the LORD is with us. Since you have not committed this act of treachery against the LORD, you have kept the Israelites free from punishment by the LORD."
32 Ritornatosene coi capi dai figli di Ruben e di Gaad dalla terra di Galaad ai confini di Canaan ai figli d'Israele riferì loro l'accaduto.	32 Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes returned from the Reubenites and the Gadites in the land of Gilead to the Israelites in the land of Canaan, and reported the matter to them.
33 La sua relazione piacque a quanti l'udirono e i figli d'Israele lodarono Iddio e smisero ogni proposito di muovere guerra e di devastare la terra posseduta dai loro fratelli.	33 The report satisfied the Israelites, who blessed God and decided against declaring war on the Reubenites and Gadites or ravaging the land they occupied.
34 I figli di Ruben e di Gad chiamarono l'altare da essi costruito "La testimonianza nostra che il Signore è il solo Dio".	34 The Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar its name as a witness among them that the LORD is God.
