1 Then David fled from Naioth, which is in Ramah, and he went and said before Jonathan: “What have I done? What is my iniquity, or what is my sin, against your father, so that he would seek my life?”	1 Ma David si fuggi da Najoth, che è presso Ramatha; e andò a parlare a Gionata (e disse): Che ho fatt’io? Qual’è l’iniquità, e il peccato commesso da me verso il padre tuo, che vuole la mia vita?
2 And he said to him: “May this not be! You shall not die. For my father will not do anything, great or small, without first revealing it to me. Therefore, has my father concealed this word solely from me? By no means shall this be!”	2 Rispose quegli: Mai no: tu non morrai: imperocché non farebbe giammai il padre mio cosa alcuna o grande, o piccola, senza prima darmene parte: celerà egli adunque a me il padre mio questa cosa solamente? questo non sarà mai.
3 And he swore again to David. And David said: “Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your sight, and so he will say, ‘Let Jonathan not know this, lest he be saddened.’ So truly, as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, there is only one step (if I may say it) separating me from death.”	3 E fece nuovo giuramento a Davidde. Ma questi disse: Sa certamente il padre tuo, com’io ho trovata grazia negli occhi tuoi, e dirà: Gionata non dee saper questo, affinchè non ne abbia dispiacere. Per altro (viva il Signore, e viva l’anima tua) un solo gradino, per così dire, v'ha tra me, e la morte.
4 And Jonathan said to David, “Whatever your soul will tell me, I will do for you.”	4 E Gionata disse a David: Farò io per te tutto quello che mi dirai.
5 Then David said to Jonathan: “Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I am accustomed to sit in a seat beside the king to eat. Therefore, permit me that I may be hidden in the field, until the evening of the third day.	5 E David disse a Gionata: Tu sai che domane son le calende, e io, secondo il costume, sono solito a sedere a tavola presso al re: lascia adunque che io mi nasconda alla campagna sino alla sera del terzo giorno.
6 If your father, looking around, will seek me, you shall respond to him: ‘David asked me if he may hurry to Bethlehem, his own city. For there are solemn sacrifices in that place for all of his tribe together.’	6 Se il padre tuo facendovi attenzione cercherà di me, tu gli risponderai: David mi ha chiesto in grazia di andare prontamente a Bethlehem sua patria: perocché vi è un sacrifizio solenne per tutti quelli di sua tribù.
7 If he will say, ‘It is well,’ then your servant will have peace. But if he will be angry, know that his malice has reached its height.	7 S’egli dice: Bene sta: il tuo servo avrà pace: ma s'egli ne prende ira, sappi, che la malizia di lui è giunta al colmo.
8 Therefore, show mercy to your servant. For you have brought me, your servant, into a covenant of the Lord with you. But if there is any iniquity in me, you may kill me, and you shall not lead me in to your father.”	8 Abbi adunque pietà del tuo servo: dappoiché hai fatto contrarre a me tuo servo una sacra alleanza con te: che se è in me qualche colpa, tu dammi la morte, ma non introdurmi dal padre tuo.
9 And Jonathan said: “May this be far from you. For certainly, if I ever realized that any wickedness was determined by my father against you, I would not be able to do anything other than report it to you.”	9 E Gionata disse: Lungi sia questo da te: perocché non è possibile, che ove io conosca, che il mal animo del padre mio sia giunto all’ultimo segno contro di te, io non te lo faccia sapere.
10 And David responded to Jonathan, “Who will repeat it to me, if your father may perhaps answer you harshly about me?”	10 E David rispose a Gionata: Chi mi recherà l'avviso, ove per disgrazia il padre tuo ti dia qualche cattiva risposta riguardo a me?
11 And Jonathan said to David, “Come, and let us go out into the field.” And when they both had gone out into the field,	11 E Gionata disse a David: Vieni, andiamo fuori alla campagna. E quando furono ambedue alla campagna,
12 Jonathan said before David: “O Lord, God of Israel, if I will discover a decision by my father, tomorrow, or the day after, and if there will be anything good concerning David, and yet I do not immediately send to you and make it known to you,	12 Disse Gionata a David: Signore Dio d'Israele, se io domani, o il giorno appresso scoprirò quello che pensi il padre mio, e vi sarà qualche cosa di buon per Davidde, e non gliene darò subito parte, e non farollo sapere a lui,
13 may the Lord do these things to Jonathan, and may he add these other things. But if my father will have persevered in malice against you, I will reveal it to your ear, and I will send you away, so that you may go in peace, and so that the Lord may be with you, just as he was with my father.	13 Il Signore faccia questo e peggio a Gionata. E se il padre mio conserverà tuttora il suo mal animo contro di te, io te lo confiderò, e ti darò licenza di andartene in pace, e il Signore sia con te, come fu col padre mio:
14 And if I live, you shall show the mercy of the Lord to me. Yet truly, if I die,	14 E se io vivrò, userai di tua gran bontà verso di me: che se io morrò,
15 you shall not take away your mercy from my house, even forever, when the Lord will have rooted out the enemies of David, each and every one of them, from the earth. May he take Jonathan from his house, and may the Lord require it from the hands of the enemies of David.”	15 Non lascerai di avere compassione in perpetuo della mia casa, allorché il Signore sterminerà l’un dopo l'altro dal mondo i nemici di David: (altrimenti) il Signore levi Gionata dalla sua casa, come punirà i nemici di David.
16 Therefore, Jonathan formed a covenant with the house of David. And the Lord required it from the hands of the enemies of David.	16 Strinse adunque Gionata alleanza colla casa di David: ma il Signore fece vendetta de' nemici di David.
17 And Jonathan continued to swear to David, because he loved him. For he loved him like his own soul.	17 Fece di più Gionata a David quest'altro giuramento, perchè gli voleva bene, e veramente lo amava come l'anima propria.
18 And Jonathan said to him: “Tomorrow is the new moon, and you will be sought.	18 E dissegli Gionata: Domane son le calende, e si cercherà di te:
19 For your seat will be empty until the day after tomorrow. Therefore, you shall descend quickly, and you shall go to the place where you are to be hidden, on a day when it is lawful to work, and you shall remain beside the stone that is called Ezel.	19 Perocchè si cercherà il perchè tu non sii al tuo posto anche il dì seguente. Scenderai pertanto in fretta al luogo, dove tu dei star nascosto il dì lavorativo, e ti porrai presso alla pietra chiamata Ezel.
20 And I will shoot three arrows near it, and I will cast them as if I were practicing for myself toward a mark.	20 E io tirerò tre saette verso quella (pietra), scoccandole come per esercitarmi a tirar al segno.
21 Also, I will send a boy, saying to him, ‘Go and bring the arrows to me.’	21 E manderò anche un servo, a cui dirò: Va, e riportami le saette.
22 If I will say to the boy, ‘Behold, the arrows are before you, take them up,’ you shall approach before me, because there is peace for you, and there is nothing evil, as the Lord lives. But if I will have spoken to the boy in this way, ‘Behold, the arrows are away from you,’ then you shall go away in peace, for the Lord has released you.	22 Se io dirò al servo: Bada, che le saette sono di qua da te, prendile, tu (allora) vieni a trovarmi, perocché tu se’ sicuro, e non vi è mal nissuno, viva il Signore. Ma se io dirò al servo: Bada, che le saette sono di là da te: vattene in pace: il Signore ti manda via.
23 Now about the word that you and I have spoken, may the Lord be between you and me, even forever.”	23 Quanto poi a quella che abbiam discorso tra noi, il Signore ne sia (testimone) tra me, e te in eterno.
24 Therefore, David was hidden in the field. And the new moon came, and the king sat down to eat bread.	24 Davidde adunque stette nascosto alla campagna, e vennero le calende, e il re si assise a mensa.
25 And when the king had sat down on his chair, (according to custom) which was beside the wall, Jonathan rose up, and Abner sat beside Saul, and David’s place appeared empty.	25 E quando il re si fu posto a sedere sulla sua sedia, la quale, secondo l’uso, era vicina al muro, Gionata si alzò, e Abner si assise accanto a Saul, e voto videsi il posto di Davidde.
26 And Saul did not say anything on that day. For he was thinking that perhaps something happened to him, so that he was not clean, or not purified.	26 E Saul non disse nulla quel giorno: perocchè si pensò che fosse accaduto fosse a Davidde di non esser mondo, nè purificato.
27 And when the second day after the new moon had begun to dawn, David’s place again appeared empty. And Saul said to Jonathan, his son, “Why has the son of Jesse not arrived to eat, neither yesterday, nor today?”	27 Ma venuto l’altro dì dopo le calende, videsi di nuovo il posto di Davidde rimaner voto. E Saul disse al suo figlio Gionata: Per qual motivo il figliuolo d’Isai non è venuto a mangiare nè jeri, né oggi?
28 And Jonathan responded to Saul, “He petitioned me earnestly that he might go to Bethlehem,	28 E Gionata rispose a Saul: Mi ha pregato istantemente di lasciarlo andare a Bethlehem:
29 and he said: ‘Permit me. For there is a solemn sacrifice in the city. One of my brothers has summoned me. Now therefore, if I have found favor in your eyes, I will go quickly, and I will see my brothers.’ For this reason, he has not come to the table of the king.”	29 E ha detto: Permettimi ch’io vada, mentre un sagrifizio solenne fassi nella città, uno de' miei fratelli mi ha invitato: or adunque se io ho trovato grazia negli occhi tuoi, andrò tosto, e rivedrò i miei fratelli. Per questo egli non è venuto alla mensa del re.
30 Then Saul, becoming angry against Jonathan, said to him: “You son of a woman wantonly seizing a man! Could I be ignorant that you love the son of Jesse, to your own shame, and to the shame of your disgraceful mother?	30 Ma Saul si adirò contro Gionata, e gli disse: Figliuolo di donna che va a caccia di uomini, non so io forse che tu vuoi bene al figliuolo d’Isai per tua confusione, e per confusione dell'indegna tua madre?
31 For all the days that the son of Jesse moves upon earth, neither you, nor your kingdom, will be secure. And so, send and bring him to me, here and now. For he is a son of death.”	31 Imperocché sino a tanto che il figliuolo d'Isai avrà vita sopra la terra, tu non sarai sicuro detto stato tuo, nè del tuo regno. Per la qual cosa fin da questo punto spedisci gente a condurlo a me: perocché egli dee morire.
32 Then Jonathan, answering his father Saul, said: “Why should he die? What has he done?”	32 Ma Gionata rispose a Saul padre suo e disse: Perchè dovrà agli morire? che ha egli fatto?
33 And Saul picked up a lance, so that he might strike him. And Jonathan understood that it had been decided by his father that David be put to death.	33 E Saulle diè di piglio alla lancia per ferirlo. E riconobbe Gionata, come il padre suo era risoluto di uccider Davidde.
34 Therefore, Jonathan rose up from the table in a rage of anger. And he did not eat bread on the second day after the new moon. For he was saddened over David, because his father had confounded him.	34 Gionata adunque si levò infuriato da mensa, e non gustò cibo il secondo dì delle calende. Perocché era afflitto per ragion di Davidde, e pel disonore fattogli dal suo padre.
35 And when the morning had begun to dawn, Jonathan went into the field according to the agreement with David, and a young boy was with him.	35 E alla punta del dì (seguente) andò Gionata alla campagna, secondo il concerto fatto con Davidde, ed era con lui un piccolo garzone.
36 And he said to his boy, “Go, and bring to me the arrows that I shoot.” And when the boy had run, he shot another arrow away from the boy.	36 Al quale egli disse: Va, e riportami le saette che io tiro. E mentre quegli andava di corsa, tirò egli un'altra saetta di là da lui.
37 And so, the boy went to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot. And Jonathan cried out, from behind the back of boy, and said: “Behold, the arrow is there, farther away from you.”	37 E il garzoncello essendo giunto al luogo della (prima) saetta tirata da Gionata, sclamò Gionata appresso a lui, e disse: Bada che la saetta è là più innanzi a te.
38 And Jonathan cried out again, from behind the back of the boy, saying, “Go quickly! Do not stand still!” Then Jonathan’s boy collected the arrows, and he brought them to his lord.	38 E di nuovo Gionata diede un grido dietro al garzoncello, e disse: Fa presto: non ti trattenere. E il garzone di Gionata raccolse le saette, e portolle al suo padrone.
39 And he did not understand at all what was happening. For only Jonathan and David knew the matter.	39 Ed ei non sapeva nulla affatto di che si trattasse: perchè soli Gionata, e David lo sapevano.
40 Then Jonathan gave his weapons to the boy, and he said to him, “Go, and carry them into the city.”	40 Indi Gionata diede al servo le sue armi, e gli disse: Va e portale alla città.
41 And when the boy had gone away, David rose up from his place, which turned toward the south, and falling prone on the ground, he reverenced three times. And kissing one another, they wept together, but David more so.	41 E partito il servo, si levò Davidde dal suo posto, che era verso mezzodì, e si prostrò boccone per terra, facendo riverenza per tre volte: e baciandosi l'un l'altro pensiero insieme, ma più Davidde.
42 Then Jonathan said to David: “Go in peace. And let us both keep all that we have ever sworn in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘May the Lord be between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, even forever.’ ”	42 Gionata adunque disse a Davidde: Va in pace: tutto quello che abbiam giurato nel nome del Signore noi due dicendo: il Signore sia (testimone) tra me e te, tra la mia stirpe, e la tua stirpe in eterno...
43 And David rose up and went away. But Jonathan entered into the city.	43 E David si mosse, e partì: e Gionata tornò in città.
