1 And Samuel said to Saul: “The Lord sent me, so that I would anoint you as king over his people Israel. Now therefore, listen to the voice of the Lord.	1 Samuele disse a Saul: « Il Signore mi mandò a ungerti re sopra il suo popolo d'Israele: or dunque ascolta la voce del Signore.
2 ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: I have taken account of all that Amalek has done to Israel, how he stood against him in the way, when he ascended from Egypt.	2 Ecco quanto dice il Signore degli eserciti:
3 Now therefore, go and strike Amalek, and demolish all that is his. You shall not spare him, and you shall not covet anything out of the things that are his. Instead, kill from man even to woman, and little ones as well as infants, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”	3 Ho riflettuto a ciò che Amalec fece a Israele e come gli si opponesse nel viaggio, mentre usciva dall'Egitto. sQr dunque va a percuotere Amalec. e distruggi ogni suo avere: non lo risparmiare, non desiderar nessuna delle sue cose; ma uccidi uomini, donne, fanciulli e bambini di latte, buoi e pecore e cammelli e asini ».
4 And so, Saul instructed the people, and he numbered them like lambs: two hundred thousand foot soldiers, and ten thousand men of Judah.	4 Saul, dati gli ordini al popolo, ne fece la rassegna come di tanti agnelli: duecento mila uomini a piedi, e dieci mila uomini di Giuda.
5 And when Saul had arrived as far as the city of Amalek, he placed ambushes at the torrent.	5 Saul, avanzatosi fino alla città di Amalec. pose un'imboscata nel torrente.
6 And Saul said to the Kenite: “Go away, withdraw, and descend from Amalek. Otherwise, I will include you with him. For you showed mercy to all the sons of Israel, when they ascended from Egypt.” And so the Kenite withdrew from the midst of Amalek.	6 E disse ai Cinei: « Andate, ritiratevi, uscite di mezzo ad Amalec, che per disgrazia non vi coinvolga con esso: voi invece aveste compassione di tutti i figli d'Israele, quando salivano dall'Egitto ». 7 And Saul struck down Amalek, from Havilah even until you arrive at Shur, which is opposite the region of Egypt.	7 E Saul percosse Amalec da Evila fino a Surm, che sta di faccia all'Egitto:
8 And he apprehended Agag, the king of Amalek, alive. But all the common people he put to death with the edge of the sword.	8 e prese vivo Agag re di Amalec, e passò a fii di spada tutto il popolo.
9 And Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the flocks of sheep, and of the herds, and the garments, and the rams, and all that was beautiful, and they were not willing to destroy them. Yet truly, whatever was vile or worthless, these they demolished.	9 Ma Saul e il popolo risparmiarono Agag, e il meglio dei greggi di pecore e di buoi, le vesti, i montoni e tutte le cose belle; invece di distruggere queste, distrussero tutte le cose vili e spregevoli.
10 Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying	10 Allora il Signore rivolse la parola a Samuele e disse:
11 “It displeases me that I have appointed Saul as king. For he has forsaken me, and he has not fulfilled the work of my words.” And Samuel was greatly saddened, and he cried out to the Lord, all night long	11 « Mi pento d'aver costituito re Saul, perchè egli mi ha abbandonato e non ha eseguiti i miei ordini ». Samuele ne restò contristato, e gridò al Signore tutta la notte.
12 And when Samuel had risen while it was still dark, so that he might go to Saul in the morning, it was reported to Samuel that Saul had arrived at Carmel, and that he had erected for himself a triumphant arch. And, while returning, he had continued on and descended to Gilgal. Therefore, Samuel went to Saul. And Saul was offering a holocaust to the Lord, from the best of the spoils, which he had brought from Amalek.	12 Samuele si alzò di none per andar la mattina da Saul ma gli fu detto che Saul, andato a Carmelo, ove sì era eretto un arco trionfale, ne era tornato, e, passando oltre, era passato a Galgala. Allora Samuele andava da Saul, e Saul offriva al Signore un olocausto delle primizie della preda fatta sopra Amalec.
13 And when Samuel had gone to Saul, Saul said to him: “You are the blessed of the Lord. I have fulfilled the word of the Lord.”	13 Quando Samuele giunge da Saul. Saul gli disse: « Sii benedetto dal Signore! Ho eseguito gli ordini del Signore ».
14 And Samuel said, “Then what is this voice of the flocks, which resounds in my ears, and of the herds, which I am hearing?”	14 Samuele disse: « Che cos'è dunque questo belar di greggi che risuona ai miei orecchi, questo muggir d'armenti che io sento? »
15 And Saul said: “They have brought these from Amalek. For the people spared the best of the sheep and of the herds, so that they might be immolated to the Lord your God. Yet truly, the remainder we have slain.”	15 Saul rispose: « Sono stati condotti dal paese di Amalee: perchè il popolo ha risparmiato il meglio delle pecore e degli armenti, per immolarli al Signore Dio tuo: le altre cose le abbiamo distrutte ».
16 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Permit me, and I will reveal to you what the Lord has said to me this night.” And he said to him, “Speak.”	16 Ma Samuele disse a Saul: « Lascia che ti dichiari quanto mi ha detto il Signore in questa notte ». Saul gli disse: » Parla ».
17 And Samuel said: “Was it not when you were little in your own eyes that you were made the head of the tribes of Israel? And the Lord anointed you as king over Israel.	17 Samuele soggiunse: « Non sei forse stato fatto capo delle tribù d'Israele, mentre eri piccolo negli occhi tuoi? Non fu il Signore che ti unse in re sopra Israele?
18 And the Lord sent you on the way, and he said: ‘Go and put to death the sinners of Amalek. And you shall fight against them, even unto utter annihilation.’	18 Or il Signore t'aveva mandato sulla via, dicendo: Va ad uccidere i peccatori di Amalec e combattili fino al loro sterminio.
19 Why then, did you not listen to the voice of the Lord? Instead, you turned to the spoils, and you did evil in the eyes of the Lord.”	19 Perchè dunque non hai ascoltata la voce del Signore, ma ti sei gettato sulla preda ed hai fatto il male sotto gli occhi del Signore? »
20 And Saul said to Samuel: “On the contrary, I did listen to the voice of the Lord, and I walked in the way along which the Lord sent me, and I led back Agag, the king of Amalek, and I put to death Amalek.	20 Saul rispose a Samuele: « In quanto a me, io ascoltai la voce del Signore, camminai sulla via per la quale il Signore mi mandò, facendo prigioniero Agag re di Amalec ed uccidendo gli Amaleciti;
21 But the people took some of the spoils, sheep and oxen, as the first-fruits of those things that were slain, to immolate to the Lord their God at Gilgal.”	21 ma è stato il popolo che dalla preda ha preso pecore e buoi, primizie di quelli fatti a pezzi, per immolarli al Signore Dio suo in Galgala ».
22 And Samuel said: “Does the Lord want holocausts and victims, and not instead that the voice of the Lord should be obeyed? For obedience is better than sacrifice. And to heed is greater than to offer the fat of rams.	22 Samuele rispose: « Vuol forse il Signore degli olocausti e delle vittime, o non piuttosto che s'obbedisca alla voce del Signore? L'obbedienza val più dei sacrifizi, il dar retta più dell'offrir grasso di montoni:
23 Therefore, it is like the sin of paganism to rebel. And it is like the crime of idolatry to refuse to obey. For this reason, therefore, because you have rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord has also rejected you from being king.”	23 perché la ribellione è come un peccato di magia, il non voler assogettarsi è come un delitto d'idolatria. Or siccome tu hai rigettato la parola dei signore, il Signore ti ha rigettato per non farti più re ».
24 And Saul said to Samuel: “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the word of the Lord, and your words, by fearing the people and obeying their voice.	24 Allora Saul disse a Samuele: « Ho peccato, perchè ho trasgredito il comaudo ilei Signore e le tue parole, per timore del popolo e per obbedire alla sua voce.
25 But now, I beg you, to bear my sin, and to return with me, so that I may adore the Lord.”	25 Ma ora te ne prego, sopporta il mio peccato, e ritorna con me, affinchè io adori il signore ».
26 And Samuel said to Saul: “I will not return with you. For you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”	26 Ma Samuele rispose a Saul: « Non posso tornare con te, perchè hai rigettata la parola del Signore, e il Signore ti ha rigettato da non farti esser più re sopra Israele ».
27 And Samuel turned away, so that he might depart. But Saul took hold of the edge of his cloak, and it tore.	27 Samuele si voltò per andarsene, ma Saul, l'afferrò pel lembo del mantello che si stracciò.
28 And Samuel said to him: “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel away from you this day. And he has delivered it to your neighbor, who is better than you are.	28 Allora Samuele gli disse: « Oggi il Signore ha strappato da te il regno d'Israele e l'ha dato ad un tuo vicino migliore di te.
29 Moreover, the One who triumphs within Israel will not spare, and he will not be moved to repentance. For he is not a man, that he should repent.”	29 Or Colui che trionfa in Israele non perdonerà e non si moverà a pentimento, perchè Egli non è un uomo per doversi pentire ».
30 Then he said: “I have sinned. But now, honor me before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and return with me, so that I may adore the Lord your God.”	30 Saul disse: « Ho peccato; ma ora onorami davanti agli anziani del mio popolo e davanti a Israele, ritorna con me, affinchè io adori il Signore Dio tuo! »
31 Therefore, Samuel turned again after Saul. And Saul adored the Lord.	31 Samuele allora ritornò, e seguì Saul, il quale adorò ilSignore.
32 And Samuel said, “Bring near to me Agag, the king of Amalek.” And Agag, very fat and trembling, was presented to him. And Agag said, “Does bitter death separate in this manner?”	32 Poi Samuele disse: « Conducetemi Agag re di Amalee ». Gli fu presentato Agag grassissimo e tremante. E Agag esclamò: « Così dunque separa l'amara morte? »
33 And Samuel said, “Just as your sword caused women to be without their children, so will your mother be without her children among women.” And Samuel cut him into pieces, before the Lord at Gilgal.	33 E Samuele a lui: « Come la tua spada privò di figli le madri, così fra le donne resterà senza figli la madre tua ». E Samuele lo tagliò a pezzi davanti al Signore in Galgala.
34 Then Samuel went away to Ramah. But Saul ascended to his house at Gibeah.	34 Poi Samuele se ne andò a Ramata, e Saul salì a casa sua in Gabaa.
35 And Samuel did not see Saul any more, until the day of his death. Yet truly, Samuel mourned for Saul, because the Lord regretted that he had appointed him as king over Israel.	35 Samuele non vide più Saul fino al giorno della sua morte, ma lo piangeva, perchè il Signore si pentiva d'averlo costituito re sopra Israele.
