CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINJERUSALEM
I saw the new heaven and the new earth. For the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and the sea is no more.1 Puis je vis un ciel nouveau, une terre nouvelle - car le premier ciel et la première terre ontdisparu, et de mer, il n'y en a plus.
And I, John, saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband.2 Et je vis la Cité sainte, Jérusalem nouvelle, qui descendait du ciel, de chez Dieu; elle s'est faitebelle, comme une jeune mariée parée pour son époux.
And I heard a great voice from the throne, saying: “Behold the tabernacle of God with men. And he will dwell with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be their God with them.3 J'entendis alors une voix clamer, du trône: "Voici la demeure de Dieu avec les hommes. Il aurasa demeure avec eux; ils seront son peuple, et lui, Dieu-avec-eux, sera leur Dieu.
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. And death shall be no more. And neither mourning, nor crying out, nor grief shall be anymore. For the first things have passed away.”4 Il essuiera toute larme de leurs yeux: de mort, il n'y en aura plus; de pleur, de cri et de peine, iln'y en aura plus, car l'ancien monde s'en est allé."
And the One who was sitting upon the throne, said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And he said to me, “Write, for these words are entirely faithful and true.”5 Alors, Celui qui siège sur le trône déclara: "Voici, je fais l'univers nouveau." Puis il ajouta:"Ecris: Ces paroles sont certaines et vraies."
And he said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To those who thirst, I will give freely from the fountain of the water of life.6 "C'en est fait, me dit-il encore, je suis l'Alpha et l'Oméga, le Principe et la Fin; celui qui a soif,moi, je lui donnerai de la source de vie, gratuitement.
Whoever prevails shall possess these things. And I will be his God, and he shall be my son.7 Telle sera la part du vainqueur; et je serai son Dieu, et lui sera mon fils.
But the fearful, and the unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and drug users, and idolaters, and all liars, these shall be a part of the pool burning with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.”8 Mais les lâches, les renégats, les dépravés, les assassins, les impurs, les sorciers, les idolâtres,bref, tous les hommes de mensonge, leur lot se trouve dans l'étang brûlant de feu et de soufre: c'est la secondemort."
And one of the seven Angels, those holding the bowls filled with the seven last afflictions, approached and spoke with me, saying: “Come, and I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”9 Alors, l'un des sept Anges aux sept coupes remplies des sept derniers fléaux s'en vint me dire:"Viens, que je te montre la Fiancée, l'Epouse de l'Agneau."
And he took me up in spirit to a great and high mountain. And he showed me the Holy City Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,10 Il me transporta donc en esprit sur une montagne de grande hauteur, et me montra la Citésainte, Jérusalem, qui descendait du ciel, de chez Dieu,
having the glory of God. And its light was like that of a precious stone, even like that of the jasper stone or like crystal.11 avec en elle la gloire de Dieu. Elle resplendit telle une pierre très précieuse, comme unepierre de jaspe cristallin.
And it had a wall, great and high, having twelve gates. And at the gates were twelve Angels. And names were written upon them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel.12 Elle est munie d'un rempart de grande hauteur pourvu de douze portes près desquelles y adouze Anges et des noms inscrits, ceux des douze tribus des fils d'Israël;
On the East were three gates, and on the North were three gates, and on the South were three gates, and on the West were three gates.13 à l'orient, trois portes; au nord, trois portes; au midi, trois portes; à l'occident, trois portes.
And the wall of the City had twelve foundations. And upon them were the twelve names of the twelve Apostles of the Lamb.14 Le rempart de la ville repose sur douze assises portant chacune le nom de l'un des douzeapôtres de l'Agneau.
And he who was speaking with me was holding a golden measuring reed, in order to measure the City, and its gates and wall.15 Celui qui me parlait tenait une mesure, un roseau d'or, pour mesurer la ville, ses portes et sonrempart;
And the city is laid out as a square, and so its length is as great as the width. And he measured the city with the golden reed for twelve thousand stadia, and its length and height and breadth were equal.16 cette ville dessine un carré: sa longueur égale sa largeur. Il la mesura donc à l'aide du roseau,soit 12.000 stades; longueur, largeur et hauteur y sont égales.
And he measured its wall as one hundred and forty-four cubits, the measure of a man, which is of an Angel.17 Puis il en mesura le rempart, soit 144 coudées. - L'Ange mesurait d'après une mesurehumaine. --
And the structure of its wall was of jasper stone. Yet truly, the city itself was of pure gold, similar to pure glass.18 Ce rempart est construit en jaspe, et la ville est de l'or pur, comme du cristal bien pur.
And the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was of jasper, the second was of sapphire, the third was of chalcedony, the fourth was of emerald,19 Les assises de son rempart sont rehaussées de pierreries de toute sorte: la première assise estde jaspe, la deuxième de saphir, la troisième de calcédoine, la quatrième d'émeraude,
the fifth was of sardonyx, the sixth was of sardius, the seventh was of chrysolite, the eighth was of beryl, the ninth was of topaz, the tenth was of chrysoprasus, the eleventh was of jacinth, the twelfth was of amethyst.20 la cinquième de sardoine, la sixième de cornaline, la septième de chrysolithe, la huitième debéryl, la neuvième de topaze, la dixième de chrysoprase, la onzième d'hyacinthe, la douzième d'améthyste.
And the twelve gates are twelve pearls, one for each, so that each gate was made from a single pearl. And the main street of the city was of pure gold, similar to transparent glass.21 Et les douze portes sont douze perles, chaque porte formée d'une seule perle; et la place de laville est de l'or pur, transparent comme du cristal.
And I saw no temple in it. For the Lord God Almighty is its temple, and the Lamb.22 De temple, je n'en vis point en elle; c'est que le Seigneur, le Dieu Maître-de-tout, est sontemple, ainsi que l'Agneau.
And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine in it. For the glory of God has illuminated it, and the Lamb is its lamp.23 La ville peut se passer de l'éclat du soleil et de celui de la lune, car la gloire de Dieu l'ailluminée, et l'Agneau lui tient lieu de flambeau.
And the nations shall walk by its light. And the kings of the earth shall bring their glory and honor into it.24 Les nations marcheront à sa lumière, et les rois de la terre viendront lui porter leurs trésors.
And its gates shall not be closed throughout the day, for there shall be no night in that place.25 Ses portes resteront ouvertes le jour - car il n'y aura pas de nuit --
And they shall bring the glory and honor of the nations into it.26 et l'on viendra lui porter les trésors et le faste des nations.
There shall not enter into it anything defiled, nor anything causing an abomination, nor anything false, but only those who have been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb.27 Rien de souillé n'y pourra pénétrer, ni ceux qui commettent l'abomination et le mal, maisseulement ceux qui sont inscrits dans le livre de vie de l'Agneau.
