In that time, there was a certain man, from mount Ephraim, named Micah.1 Vi fu in quel tempo un uomo del monte d'Efraim, chiamato Mica,
And he said to his mother, “The one thousand one hundred silver coins, which you had separated for yourself, and about which you had sworn in my hearing, behold, I have them, and they are with me.” And she answered him, “My son has been blessed by the Lord.”2 il quale disse a sua madre: « I mille e cento sicli d'argento che avevi messi da parte, e relativamente ai quali, come sentii, facesti un giuramento, li ho io e li ho conservati ». Ed essa gli rispose: « Sia benedetto il mio figlio dal Signore! »
Therefore, he restored them to his mother. And she said to him: “I have consecrated and vowed this silver to the Lord, so that my son would receive it from my hand, and would make a molten idol and a graven image. And now I deliver it to you.”3 Egli dunque li consegnò a sua madre, che gli aveva detto: « Quest'argento l'ho consacrato e votato al Signore per darlo a mio figlio e farci una scultura e una statua di getto: ecco, te lo consegno ».
And when he restored these to his mother, she took two hundred of the silver coins, and she gave them to the silversmith, so that he might make from them a molten idol and a graven image. And it was in the house of Micah.4 Egli adunque li rendè a sua madre, la quale, presi duecento sicli d'argento, li diede ad un argentiere, affinchè ne facesse una scultura e una statua di getto, che poi Mica tenne in casa,
And he also separated in it a little shrine for the god. And he made an ephod and theraphim, that is, a priestly garment and idols. And he filled the hand of one of his sons, and he became his priest.5 riservando al dio un'edicola, e fatto un efod e dei terafim, cioè una veste sacerdotale e degli idoli, riempì la mano di uno dei suoi figli che ne divenne sacerdote.
In those days, there was no king in Israel. Instead, each one did what seemed right to himself.6 In quel tempo non v'era re in Israele, e ciascuno faceva ciò che gli pareva bene.
Also, there was another young man, from Bethlehem of Judah, one of his relatives. And he himself was a Levite, and he was living there.7 Avvenne pure che un altro giovinetto di Betlemme di Giuda, che avendo parenti in Giuda, ivi abitava, sebbene levita,
Then, departing from the city of Bethlehem, he wished to sojourn wherever he would find it beneficial to himself. And when he had arrived at mount Ephraim, while making the journey, he also turned aside for a little while to the house of Micah.8 partitosi dalla città di Betlemme, volle andare ove trovasse da star meglio. Durante il suo viaggio, giunto al monte d'Efraim, entrò nella casa di Mica,
And he was asked by him where he came from. And he responded: “I am a Levite from Bethlehem of Judah. And I am traveling so that I may live where I am able, if I perceive it to be useful to me.”9 Il quale gli domandò donde venisse. « Io son levita di Betlemme, gli rispose, e giro per fermarmi dove potrò e dove mi torni conto ».
And Micah said: “Stay with me. And you shall be to me like a parent and a priest. And I will give to you, each year, ten silver coins, and a double-layered garment, and whatever provisions are necessary.”10 E Mica gli disse: «Allora sta con me e fammi da padre e da sacerdote, ed io, oltre il vitto necessario, ti darò un doppio vestito e dieci sicli d'argento all'anno ».
He agreed, and he stayed with the man. And he was to him like one of his sons.11 Accettò di dimorare presso di lui che lo trattò come uno dei suoi figli.
And Micah filled his hand, and he had the young man with him as his priest,12 Mica gli riempì la mano, e lo tenne presso di sè come sacerdote,
saying: “Now I know that God will be good to me, since I have a priest from the stock of the Levites.”13 esclamando: « Ora poi son sicuro che Dio mi farà dei bene, perchè ho un sacerdote della stirpe di Levi! »
