Now Saul, still breathing threats and beatings against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,1 Saulo intanto, che ancora spirava minacce e strage contro i discepoli del Signore, si presentò al sommo sacerdote
and he petitioned him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that, if he found any men or women belonging to this Way, he could lead them as prisoners to Jerusalem.2 e gli chiese lettere per le sinagoghe di Damasco, per essere autorizzato, se avesse trovato dei seguaci della Via, uomini e donne, a condurli legati a Gerusalemme.
And as he made the journey, it happened that he was approaching Damascus. And suddenly, a light from heaven shone around him.3 Strada facendo, mentre stava avvicinandosi a Damasco, d'improvviso una luce dal cielo gli sfolgorò d'intorno:
And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”4 caduto a terra, udì una voce che gli diceva: "Saulo, Saulo, perché mi perseguiti?".
And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goad.”5 Egli rispose: "Chi sei, o Signore?". E quegli: "Io sono Gesù che tu perseguiti;
And he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do you want me to do?”6 ma àlzati in piedi, entra nella città e ti sarà detto ciò che devi fare".
And the Lord said to him, “Rise up and go into the city, and there you will be told what you ought to do.” Now the men who were accompanying him were standing stupefied, hearing indeed a voice, but seeing no one.7 Gli uomini che viaggiavano con lui stavano senza parola, poiché udivano il suono della voce ma non vedevano nessuno.
Then Saul rose up from the ground. And upon opening his eyes, he saw nothing. So leading him by the hand, they brought him into Damascus.8 Saulo si alzò da terra e, aperti gli occhi, non poteva vedere nulla. Allora, prendendolo per mano, lo condussero a Damasco.
And in that place, he was without sight for three days, and he neither ate nor drank.9 Stette ivi tre giorni senza vedere: non mangiò né bevve.
Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias. And the Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias!” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.”10 Ora c'era a Damasco un discepolo di nome Anania e il Signore gli disse in visione: "Anania!". Egli rispose: "Eccomi, Signore!".
And the Lord said to him: “Rise up and go into the street that is called Straight, and seek, in the house of Judas, the one named Saul of Tarsus. For behold, he is praying.”11 E il Signore a lui: "A'lzati e va' nel vicolo chiamato Diritto e cerca, nella casa di Giuda, un uomo di Tarso di nome Saulo: eccolo infatti che sta pregando
(And Paul saw a man named Ananias entering and imposing hands upon him, so that he might receive his sight.)12 e ha visto in visione un uomo di nome Anania entrare e imporgli le mani perché riacquisti la vista".
But Ananias responded: “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem.13 Anania rispose: "Signore, ho udito molti parlare di quest'uomo e di quanto male ha fatto ai tuoi santi in Gerusalemme.
And he has authority here from the leaders of the priests to bind all who invoke your name.”14 E qui ha l'autorizzazione dai sommi sacerdoti di mettere in catene quelli che invocano il tuo nome".
Then the Lord said to him: “Go, for this one is an instrument chosen by me to convey my name before nations and kings and the sons of Israel.15 Il Signore gli disse: "Va', poiché egli è uno strumento che io mi sono scelto per portare il mio nome davanti ai pagani, ai re e ai figli d'Israele.
For I will reveal to him how much he must suffer on behalf of my name.”16 Io poi gli mostrerò quanto dovrà patire a causa del mio nome".
And Ananias departed. And he entered the house. And laying his hands upon him, he said: “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, he who appeared to you on the way by which you arrived, sent me so that you would receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”17 Anania partì, entrò nella casa e imponendogli le mani disse: "Saulo, fratello! E' il Signore che mi ha mandato: quel Gesù che ti è apparso sulla strada per cui tu venivi. Mi ha mandato perché tu ricuperi la vista e sia riempito di Spirito Santo".
And immediately, it was as if scales had fallen from his eyes, and he received his sight. And rising up, he was baptized.18 E subito gli caddero dagli occhi come delle scaglie e riprese a vedere. Allora si alzò, fu battezzato,
And when he had taken a meal, he was strengthened. Now he was with the disciples who were at Damascus for some days.19 prese cibo e ricuperò le forze. Si trattenne con i discepoli che erano a Damasco per alcuni giorni
And he was continuously preaching Jesus in the synagogues: that he is the Son of God.20 e subito si mise a predicare Gesù nelle sinagoghe proclamando: "Questi è il Figlio di Dio!".
And all who heard him were astonished, and they said, “Is this not the one who, in Jerusalem, was fighting against those invoking this name, and who came here for this: so that he might lead them away to the leaders of the priests?”21 E tutti coloro che lo udivano restavano sbalorditi e dicevano: "Non è forse lui quello che si è accanito in Gerusalemme contro coloro che invocano questo nome, ed è venuto qui proprio per condurli incatenati ai sommi sacerdoti?".
But Saul was increasing to a greater extent in ability, and so he was confounding the Jews who lived at Damascus, by affirming that he is the Christ.22 Ma Saulo si animava sempre più e confondeva i Giudei che abitavano in Damasco, sostenendo che costui è il Cristo.
And when many days were completed, the Jews took counsel as one, so that they might put him to death.23 Passati parecchi giorni, i Giudei si accordarono per ucciderlo.
But their treachery became known to Saul. Now they were also watching the gates, day and night, so that they might put him to death.24 Ma la loro trama fu resa nota a Saulo. Essi sorvegliavano anche le porte della città giorno e notte per ucciderlo.
But the disciples, taking him away by night, sent him over the wall by letting him down in a basket.25 Allora i suoi discepoli lo presero di notte e lo calarono lungo il muro in una sporta.
And when he had arrived in Jerusalem, he attempted to join himself to the disciples. And they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.26 Giunto a Gerusalemme, cercava di associarsi ai discepoli; ma tutti lo temevano, non credendo che fosse un discepolo.
But Barnabas took him aside and led him to the Apostles. And he explained to them how he had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken to him, and how, in Damascus, he had acted faithfully in the name of Jesus.27 Allora Bàrnaba lo prese con sé, lo condusse dagli apostoli e raccontò loro come per strada aveva visto il Signore, il quale gli aveva parlato, e come a Damasco aveva predicato apertamente nel nome di Gesù.
And he was with them, entering and departing Jerusalem, and acting faithfully in the name of the Lord.28 Da allora restò con loro in Gerusalemme in piena familiarità e prese coraggio per parlare apertamente nel nome del Signore.
He also was speaking with the Gentiles and disputing with the Greeks. But they were seeking to kill him.29 Parlava e disputava con gli ellenisti; ma quelli tramavano per ucciderlo.
And when the brothers had realized this, they brought him to Caesarea and sent him away to Tarsus.30 I fratelli, venuti a conoscenza della cosa, lo condussero a Cesarea e lo fecero partire per Tarso.
Certainly, the Church had peace throughout all of Judea and Galilee and Samaria, and it was being built up, while walking in the fear of the Lord, and it was being filled with the consolation of the Holy Spirit.31 La chiesa, intanto, in tutta la Giudea, la Galilea e la Samaria era in pace e si edificava e progrediva nel timore del Signore, piena della consolazione dello Spirito Santo.
Then it happened that Peter, as he traveled around everywhere, came to the saints who were living at Lydda.32 Or avvenne che Pietro, percorrendo tutte queste regioni, discese anche presso i santi che abitavano in Lidda.
But he found there a certain man, named Aeneas, who was a paralytic, who had lain in bed for eight years.33 Trovò qui un uomo di nome Enea, che da otto anni giaceva su un letto, perché era paralitico.
And Peter said to him: “Aeneas, the Lord Jesus Christ heals you. Rise up and arrange your bed.” And immediately he rose up.34 E Pietro gli disse: "Enea, Gesù Cristo ti guarisce: sorgi e rifatti da solo il tuo letto". E subito si alzò.
And all who were living in Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they were converted to the Lord.35 Lo videro tutti quelli che abitavano Lidda e la pianura di Saron, e si convertirono al Signore.
Now in Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which in translation is called Dorcas. She was filled with the good works and almsgiving that she was accomplishing.36 A Giaffa c'era una discepola di nome Tabità, che significa Gazzella. Essa faceva molte opere buone e molte elemosine.
And it happened that, in those days, she became ill and died. And when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room.37 Proprio in quei giorni si ammalò e morì. Lavarono il cadavere e lo esposero al piano superiore.
Now since Lydda was close to Joppa, the disciples, upon hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, asking him: “Do not be slow in coming to us.”38 Essendo Lidda vicino a Giaffa, i discepoli, saputo che Pietro si trovava colà, mandarono da lui due uomini pregandolo: "Non tardare a venire fino a noi!".
Then Peter, rising up, went with them. And when he had arrived, they led him to an upper room. And all the widows were standing around him, weeping and showing him the tunics and garments that Dorcas had made for them.39 Pietro si alzò e partì con loro. Quando giunse, lo condussero al piano superiore e si presentarono a lui tutte le vedove che piangevano e gli mostravano le tuniche e le vesti che Gazzella faceva quando era ancora con loro.
And when they had all been sent outside, Peter, kneeling down, prayed. And turning to the body, he said: “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes and, upon seeing Peter, sat up again.40 Pietro allora fece uscire tutti e postosi in ginocchio pregò. Rivolto al cadavere disse: "Tabità, àlzati!". Ella aprì gli occhi e, veduto Pietro, si pose a sedere.
And offering her his hand, he lifted her up. And when he had called in the saints and the widows, he presented her alive.41 Egli, dandole la mano, la fece alzare. Poi chiamò i santi e le vedove e la presentò loro viva.
Now this became known throughout all of Joppa. And many believed in the Lord.42 Questo fatto fu risaputo in tutta Giaffa e molti credettero nel Signore.
And it happened that he resided for many days in Joppa, with a certain Simon, a tanner.43 Egli rimase in Giaffa parecchi giorni, in casa di un certo Simone conciatore di pelli.
