Now in those days, there occurred a great persecution against the Church at Jerusalem. And they were all dispersed throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the Apostles.1 Saulo aprobaba su muerte. Aquel día se desató una gran persecución contra la Iglesia de Jerusalén. Todos, a excepción de los apóstoles, se dispersaron por las regiones de Judea y Samaria.
But God-fearing men arranged for Stephen’s funeral, and they made a great mourning over him.2 Unos hombres piadosos sepultaron a Esteban e hicieron gran duelo por él.
Then Saul was laying waste to the Church by entering throughout the houses, and dragging away men and women, and committing them to prison.3 Entretanto Saulo hacía estragos en la Iglesia; entraba por las casas, se llevaba por la fuerza hombres y mujeres, y los metía en la cárcel.
Therefore, those who had been dispersed were traveling around, evangelizing the Word of God.4 Los que se habían dispersado iban por todas partes anunciando la Buena Nueva de la Palabra.
Now Philip, descending to a city of Samaria, was preaching Christ to them.5 Felipe bajó a una ciudad de Samaria y les predicaba a Cristo.
And the crowd was listening intently and with one accord to those things which were being said by Philip, and they were watching the signs which he was accomplishing.6 La gente escuchaba con atención y con un mismo espíritu lo que decía Felipe, porque le oían y veían las señales que realizaba;
For many of them had unclean spirits, and, crying out with a loud voice, these departed from them.7 pues de muchos posesos salían los espíritus inmundos dando grandes voces, y muchos paralíticos y cojos quedaron curados.
And many of the paralytics and the lame were cured.8 Y hubo una gran alegría en aquella ciudad.
Therefore, there was great gladness in that city. Now there was a certain man named Simon, who formerly had been a magician in that city, seducing the people of Samaria, claiming himself to be someone great.9 En la ciudad había ya de tiempo atrás un hombre llamado Simón que practicaba la magia y tenía atónito al pueblo de Samaria y decía que él era algo grande.
And to all those who would listen, from the least even to the greatest, he was saying: “Here is the power of God, which is called great.”10 Y todos, desde el menor hasta el mayor, le prestaban atención y decían: «Este es la Potencia de Dios llamada la Grande».
And they were attentive to him because, for a long time, he had deluded them with his magic.11 Le prestaban atención porque les había tenido atónitos por mucho tiempo con sus artes mágicas.
Yet truly, once they had believed Philip, who was evangelizing the kingdom of God, both men and women were baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.12 Pero cuando creyeron a Felipe que anunciaba la Buena Nueva del Reino de Dios y el nombre de Jesucristo, empezaron a bautizarse hombres y mujeres.
Then Simon himself also believed and, when he had been baptized, he adhered to Philip. And now, seeing also the greatest signs and miracles being wrought, he was amazed and stupefied.13 Hasta el mismo Simón creyó y, una vez bautizado, no se apartaba de Felipe; y estaba atónito al ver las señales y grandes milagros que se realizaban.
Now when the Apostles who were in Jerusalem had heard that Samaria had received the Word of God, they sent Peter and John to them.14 Al enterarse los apóstoles que estaban en Jerusalén de que Samaria había aceptado la Palabra de Dios, les enviaron a Pedro y a Juan.
And when they had arrived, they prayed for them, so that they might receive the Holy Spirit.15 Estos bajaron y oraron por ellos para que recibieran el Espíritu Santo;
For he had not yet come to any among them, since they were only baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.16 pues todavía no había descendido sobre ninguno de ellos; únicamente habían sido bautizados en el nombre del Señor Jesús.
Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.17 Entonces les imponían las manos y recibían el Espíritu Santo.
But when Simon had seen that, by the imposition of the hands of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,18 Al ver Simón que mediante la imposición de las manos de los apóstoles se daba el Espíritu, les ofreció dinero diciendo:
saying, “Give this power to me also, so that on whomever I will lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit.” But Peter said to him:19 «Dadme a mí también este poder para que reciba el Espíritu Santo aquel a quien yo impoga las manos».
“Let your money be with you in perdition, for you have supposed that a gift of God might be possessed by money.20 Pedro le contestó: «Vaya tu dinero a la perdición y tú con él; pues has pensado que el don de Dios se compra con dinero.
There is no part or place for you in this matter. For your heart is not upright in the sight of God.21 En este asunto no tienes tú parte ni herencia, pues tu corazón no es recto delante de Dios.
And so, repent from this, your wickedness, and beg God, so that perhaps this plan of your heart might be forgiven you.22 Arrepiéntete, pues, de esa tu maldad y ruega al Señor, a ver si se te perdona ese pensamiento de tu corazón;
For I perceive you to be in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.”23 porque veo que tú estás en hiel de amargura y en ataduras de iniquidad».
Then Simon responded by saying, “Pray for me to the Lord, so that nothing of what you have said may happen to me.”24 Simón respondió: «Rogad vosotros al Señor por mí, para que no venga sobre mí ninguna de esas cosas que habéis dicho».
And indeed, after testifying and speaking the Word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, and they evangelized the many regions of the Samaritans.25 Ellos, después de haber dado testimonio y haber predicado la Palabra del Señor, se volvieron a Jerusalén evangelizando muchos pueblos samaritanos.
Now an Angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Rise up and go toward the south, to the way which descends from Jerusalem into Gaza, where there is a desert.”26 El Angel del Señor habló a Felipe diciendo: «Levántate y marcha hacia el mediodía por el camino que baja de Jerusalén a Gaza. Es desierto».
And rising up, he went. And behold, an Ethiopian man, a eunuch, powerful under Candace, the queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasures, had arrived in Jerusalem to worship.27 Se levantó y partió. Y he aquí que un etíope eunuco, alto funcionario de Candace, reina de los etíopes, que estaba a cargo de todos sus tesoros, y había venido a adorar en Jerusalén,
And while returning, he was sitting upon his chariot and reading from the prophet Isaiah.28 regresaba sentado en su carro, leyendo al profeta Isaías.
Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Draw near and join yourself to this chariot.”29 El Espíritu dijo a Felipe: «Acércate y ponte junto a ese carro».
And Philip, hurrying, heard him reading from the prophet Isaiah, and he said, “Do you think that you understand what you are reading?”30 Felipe corrió hasta él y le oyó leer al profeta Isaías; y le dijo: «¿Entiendes lo que vas leyendo?»
And he said, “But how can I, unless someone will have revealed it to me?” And he asked Philip to climb up and sit with him.31 El contestó: «¿Cómo lo puedo entender si nadie me hace de guía?» Y rogó a Felipe que subiese y se sentase con él.
Now the place in Scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter. And like a lamb silent before his shearer, so he opened not his mouth.32 El pasaje de la Escritura que iba leyendo era éste: «Fue llevado como una oveja al matadero; y como cordero, mudo delante del que lo trasquila, así él no abre la boca.
He endured his judgment with humility. Who of his generation shall describe how his life was taken away from the earth?”33 En su humillación le fue negada la justicia; ¿quién podrá contar su descendencia? Porque su vida fue arrancada de la tierra».
Then the eunuch responded to Philip, saying: “I beg you, about whom is the prophet saying this? About himself, or about someone else?”34 El eunuco preguntó a Felipe: «Te ruego me digas de quién dice esto el profeta: ¿de sí mismo o de otro?»
Then Philip, opening his mouth and beginning from this Scripture, evangelized Jesus to him.35 Felipe entonces, partiendo de este texto de la Escritura, se puso a anunciarle la Buena Nueva de Jesús.
And while they were going along the way, they arrived at a certain water source. And the eunuch said: “There is water. What would prevent me from being baptized?”36 Siguiendo el camino llegaron a un sitio donde había agua. El eunuco dijo: «Aquí hay agua; ¿qué impide que yo sea bautizado?»
Then Philip said, “If you believe from your whole heart, it is permitted.” And he responded by saying, “I believe the Son of God to be Jesus the Christ.”
And he ordered the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch descended into the water. And he baptized him.38 Y mandó detener el carro. Bajaron ambos al agua, Felipe y el eunuco; y lo bautizó,
And when they had ascended from the water, the Spirit of the Lord took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him anymore. Then he went on his way, rejoicing.39 y en saliendo del agua, el Espíritu del Señor arrebató a Felipe y ya no le vio más el eunuco, que siguió gozoso su camino.
Now Philip was found in Azotus. And continuing on, he evangelized all the cities, until he arrived in Caesarea.40 Felipe se encontró en Azoto y recorría evangelizando todas las ciudades hasta llegar a Cesarea.
