When Jesus had said these things, he departed with his disciples across the Torrent of Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples.1 Haec cum dixisset Iesus, egressus est cum discipulis suis transtorrentem Cedron, ubi erat hortus, in quem introivit ipse et discipuli eius.
But Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus had frequently met with his disciples there.2 Sciebat autem et Iudas, qui tradebat eum, locum, quia frequenter Iesusconvenerat illuc cum discipulis suis.
Then Judas, when he had received a cohort from both the high priests and the attendants of the Pharisees, approached the place with lanterns and torches and weapons.3 Iudas ergo, cum accepisset cohortem et apontificibus et pharisaeis ministros, venit illuc cum lanternis et facibus etarmis.
And so Jesus, knowing all that was about to happen to him, advanced and said to them, “Who are you seeking?”4 Iesus itaque sciens omnia, quae ventura erant super eum, processit etdicit eis: “ Quem quaeritis? ”.
They answered him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Now Judas, who betrayed him, was also standing with them.5 Responderunt ei: “ Iesum Nazarenum ”.Dicit eis: “ Ego sum! ”. Stabat autem et Iudas, qui tradebat eum, cum ipsis.
Then, when he said to them, “I am he,” they moved back and fell to the ground.6 Ut ergo dixit eis: “ Ego sum! ”, abierunt retrorsum et ceciderunt interram.
Then again he questioned them: “Who are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.”7 Iterum ergo eos interrogavit: “ Quem quaeritis? ”. Illi autemdixerunt: “ Iesum Nazarenum ”.
Jesus responded: “I told you that I am he. Therefore, if you are seeking me, permit these others to go away.”8 Respondit Iesus: “ Dixi vobis: Ego sum!Si ergo me quaeritis, sinite hos abire ”,
This was so that the word might be fulfilled, which he said, “Of those whom you have given to me, I have not lost any of them.”9 ut impleretur sermo, quem dixit:“ Quos dedisti mihi, non perdidi ex ipsis quemquam ”.
Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and he struck the servant of the high priest, and he cut off his right ear. Now the name of the servant was Malchus.10 Simon ergo Petrus, habens gladium, eduxit eum et percussit pontificis servum et abscidit eiusauriculam dextram. Erat autem nomen servo Malchus.
Therefore, Jesus said to Peter: “Set your sword into the scabbard. Should I not drink the chalice which my father has given to me?”11 Dixit ergo Iesus Petro:“ Mitte gladium in vaginam; calicem, quem dedit mihi Pater, non bibam illum?”.
Then the cohort, and the tribune, and the attendants of the Jews apprehended Jesus and bound him.12 Cohors ergo et tribunus et ministri Iudaeorum comprehenderunt Iesum etligaverunt eum
And they led him away, first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year.13 et adduxerunt ad Annam primum; erat enim socer Caiphae, quierat pontifex anni illius.
Now Caiaphas was the one who had given counsel to the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die for the people.14 Erat autem Caiphas, qui consilium dederat Iudaeis:“ Expedit unum hominem mori pro populo ”.
And Simon Peter was following Jesus with another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and so he entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest.15 Sequebatur autem Iesum Simon Petrus et alius discipulus. Discipulus autemille erat notus pontifici et introivit cum Iesu in atrium pontificis;
But Peter was standing outside at the entrance. Therefore, the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the woman who was the doorkeeper, and he led in Peter.16 Petrusautem stabat ad ostium foris. Exivit ergo discipulus alius, qui erat notuspontifici, et dixit ostiariae et introduxit Petrum.
Therefore, the woman servant keeping the door said to Peter, “Are you not also among the disciples of this man?” He said, “I am not.”17 Dicit ergo Petro ancillaostiaria: “ Numquid et tu ex discipulis es hominis istius? ”. Dicit ille:“ Non sum! ”.
Now the servants and attendants were standing before burning coals, for it was cold, and they were warming themselves. And Peter was standing with them also, warming himself.18 Stabant autem servi et ministri, qui prunas fecerant, quiafrigus erat, et calefaciebant se; erat autem cum eis et Petrus stans etcalefaciens se.
Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine.19 Pontifex ergo interrogavit Iesum de discipulis suis et de doctrina eius.
Jesus responded to him: “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews meet. And I have said nothing in secret.20 Respondit ei Iesus: “ Ego palam locutus sum mundo; ego semper docui insynagoga et in templo, quo omnes Iudaei conveniunt, et in occulto locutus sumnihil.
Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said to them. Behold, they know these things that I have said.”21 Quid me interrogas? Interroga eos, qui audierunt quid locutus sumipsis; ecce hi sciunt, quae dixerim ego ”.
Then, when he had said this, one the attendants standing nearby struck Jesus, saying: “Is this the way you answer the high priest?”22 Haec autem cum dixisset, unusassistens ministrorum dedit alapam Iesu dicens: “ Sic respondes pontifici? ”.
Jesus answered him: “If I have spoken wrongly, offer testimony about the wrong. But if I have spoken correctly, then why do you strike me?”23 Respondit ei Iesus: “ Si male locutus sum, testimonium perhibe de malo; siautem bene, quid me caedis? ”.
And Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.24 Misit ergo eum Annas ligatum ad Caiphampontificem.
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Then they said to him, “Are you not also one of his disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”25 Erat autem Simon Petrus stans et calefaciens se. Dixerunt ergo ei: “Numquid et tu ex discipulis eius es? ”. Negavit ille et dixit: “ Non sum!”.
One of the servants of the high priest (a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off) said to him, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”26 Dicit unus ex servis pontificis, cognatus eius, cuius abscidit Petrusauriculam: “ Nonne ego te vidi in horto cum illo? ”.
Therefore, again, Peter denied it. And immediately the rooster crowed.27 Iterum ergo negavitPetrus; et statim gallus cantavit.
Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the praetorium. Now it was morning, and so they did not enter into the praetorium, so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.28 Adducunt ergo Iesum a Caipha in praetorium. Erat autem mane. Et ipsi nonintroierunt in praetorium, ut non contaminarentur, sed manducarent Pascha.
Therefore, Pilate went outside to them, and he said, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”29 Exivit ergo Pilatus ad eos foras et dicit: “ Quam accusationem affertisadversus hominem hunc? ”.
They responded and said to him, “If he were not an evil-doer, we would not have handed him over you.”30 Responderunt et dixerunt ei: “ Si non esset hicmalefactor, non tibi tradidissemus eum ”.
Therefore, Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your own law.” Then the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to execute anyone.”31 Dixit ergo eis Pilatus: “Accipite eum vos et secundum legem vestram iudicate eum! ”. Dixerunt eiIudaei: “ Nobis non licet interficere quemquam ”,
This was so that the word of Jesus would be fulfilled, which he spoke signifying what kind of death he would die.32 ut sermo Iesuimpleretur, quem dixit, significans qua esset morte moriturus.
Then Pilate entered the praetorium again, and he called Jesus and said to him, “You are the king of the Jews?”33 Introivit ergo iterum in praetorium Pilatus et vocavit Iesum et dixit ei: “Tu es rex Iudaeorum? ”.
Jesus responded, “Are you saying this of yourself, or have others spoken to you about me?”34 Respondit Iesus: “ A temetipso tu hoc dicis, analii tibi dixerunt de me? ”.
Pilate responded: “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the high priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?”35 Respondit Pilatus: “ Numquid ego Iudaeussum? Gens tua et pontifices tradiderunt te mihi; quid fecisti? ”.
Jesus responded: “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my ministers would certainly strive so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not now from here.”36 ResponditIesus: “ Regnum meum non est de mundo hoc; si ex hoc mundo esset regnum meum, ministri mei decertarent, ut non traderer Iudaeis; nunc autem meum regnum nonest hinc ”.
And so Pilate said to him, “You are a king, then?” Jesus answered, “You are saying that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world: so that I may offer testimony to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.”37 Dixit itaque ei Pilatus: “ Ergo rex es tu? ”. ResponditIesus: “ Tu dicis quia rex sum. Ego in hoc natus sum et ad hoc veni in mundum,ut testimonium perhibeam veritati; omnis, qui est ex veritate, audit meam vocem”.
Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and he said to them, “I find no case against him.38 Dicit ei Pilatus: “ Quid est veritas? ”. Et cum hoc dixisset, iterumexivit ad Iudaeos et dicit eis: “ Ego nullam invenio in eo causam.
But you have a custom, that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore, do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”39 Estautem consuetudo vobis, ut unum dimittam vobis in Pascha; vultis ergo dimittamvobis regem Iudaeorum? ”.
Then they all cried out repeatedly, saying: “Not this one, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.40 Clamaverunt ergo rursum dicentes: “ Non huncsed Barabbam! ”. Erat autem Barabbas latro.
