In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word.1 En el principio existía la Palabra y la Palabra estaba con Dios, y la Palabra era Dios.
He was with God in the beginning.2 Ella estaba en el principio con Dios.
All things were made through Him, and nothing that was made was made without Him.3 Todo se hizo por ella y sin ella no se hizo nada de cuanto existe.
Life was in Him, and Life was the light of men.4 En ella estaba la vida y la vida era la luz de los hombres,
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.5 y la luz brilla en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no la vencieron.
There was a man sent by God, whose name was John.6 Hubo un hombre, enviado por Dios: se llamaba Juan.
He arrived as a witness to offer testimony about the Light, so that all would believe through him.7 Este vino para un testimonio, para dar testimonio de la luz, para que todos creyeran por él.
He was not the Light, but he was to offer testimony about the Light.8 No era él la luz, sino quien debía dar testimonio de la luz.
The true Light, which illuminates every man, was coming into this world.9 La Palabra era la luz verdadera que ilumina a todo hombre que viene a este mundo.
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world did not recognize him.10 En el mundo estaba, y el mundo fue hecho por ella, y el mundo no la conoció.
He went to his own, and his own did not accept him.11 Vino a su casa, y los suyos no la recibieron.
Yet whoever did accept him, those who believed in his name, he gave them the power to become the sons of God.12 Pero a todos los que la recibieron les dio poder de hacerse hijos de Dios, a los que creen en su nombre;
These are born, not of blood, nor of the will of flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.13 la cual no nació de sangre, ni de deseo de hombre, sino que nació de Dios.
And the Word became flesh, and he lived among us, and we saw his glory, glory like that of an only-begotten son from the Father, full of grace and truth.14 Y la Palabra se hizo carne, y puso su Morada entre nosotros, y hemos contemplado su gloria, gloria que recibe del Padre como Hijo único, lleno de gracia y de verdad.
John offers testimony about him, and he cries out, saying: “This is the one about whom I said: ‘He who is to come after me, has been placed ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ ”15 Juan da testimonio de él y clama: «Este era del que yo dije: El que viene detrás de mí se ha puesto delante de mí, porque existía antes que yo».
And from his fullness, we all have received, even grace for grace.16 Pues de su plenitud hemos recibido todos, y gracia por gracia.
For the law was given though Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.17 Porque la Ley fue dada por medio de Moisés; la gracia y la verdad nos han llegado por Jesucristo.
No one ever saw God; the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he himself has described him.18 A Dios nadie le ha visto jamás: el Hijo único, que está en el seno del Padre, él lo ha contado.
And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to him, so that they might ask him, “Who are you?”19 Y este fue el testimonio de Juan, cuando los judíos enviaron donde él desde Jerusalén sacerdotes y levitas a preguntarle: «¿Quién eres tú?»
And he confessed it and did not deny it; and what he confessed was: “I am not the Christ.”20 El confesó, y no negó; confesó: «Yo no soy el Cristo».
And they questioned him: “Then what are you? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”21 Y le preguntaron: «¿Qué, pues? ¿Eres tú Elías?» El dijo: «No lo soy». - «¿Eres tú el profeta?» Respondió: «No».
Therefore, they said to him: “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”22 Entonces le dijeron: «¿Quién eres, pues, para que demos respuesta a los que nos han enviado? ¿Qué dices de ti mismo?»
He said, “I am a voice crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ just as the prophet Isaiah said.”23 Dijo él: «Yo soy voz del que clama en el desierto: Rectificad el camino del Señor, como dijo el profeta Isaías».
And some of those who had been sent were from among the Pharisees.24 Los enviados eran fariseos.
And they questioned him and said to him, “Then why do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the Prophet?”25 Y le preguntaron: «¿Por qué, pues, bautizas, si no eres tú el Cristo ni Elías ni el profeta?»
John answered them by saying: “I baptize with water. But in your midst stands one, whom you do not know.26 Juan les respondió: «Yo bautizo con agua, pero en medio de vosotros está uno a quien no conocéis,
The same is he who is to come after me, who has been placed ahead of me, the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to loosen.”27 que viene detrás de mí, a quien yo no soy digno de desatarle la correa de su sandalia».
These things happened in Bethania, across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.28 Esto ocurrió en Betania, al otro lado del Jordán, donde estaba Juan bautizando.
On the next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him, and so he said: “Behold, the Lamb of God. Behold, he who takes away the sin of the world.29 Al día siguiente ve a Jesús venir hacia él y dice: «He ahí el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo.
This is the one about whom I said, ‘After me arrives a man, who has been placed ahead of me, because he existed before me.’30 Este es por quien yo dije: Detrás de mí viene un hombre, que se ha puesto delante de mí, porque existía antes que yo.
And I did not know him. Yet it is for this reason that I come baptizing with water: so that he may be made manifest in Israel.”31 Y yo no le conocía, pero he venido a bautizar en agua para que él sea manifestado a Israel».
And John offered testimony, saying: “For I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove; and he remained upon him.32 Y Juan dio testimonio diciendo: «He visto al Espíritu que bajaba como una paloma del cielo y se quedaba sobre él.
And I did not know him. But he who sent me to baptize with water said to me: ‘He over whom you will see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’33 Y yo no le conocía pero el que me envió a bautizar con agua, me dijo: “Aquel sobre quien veas que baja el Espíritu y se queda sobre él, ése es el que bautiza con Espíritu Santo.”
And I saw, and I gave testimony: that this one is the Son of God.”34 Y yo le he visto y doy testimonio de que éste es el Elegido de Dios».
The next day again, John was standing with two of his disciples.35 Al día siguiente, Juan se encontraba de nuevo allí con dos de sus discípulos.
And catching sight of Jesus walking, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”36 Fijándose en Jesús que pasaba, dice: «He ahí el Cordero de Dios».
And two disciples were listening to him speaking. And they followed Jesus.37 Los dos discípulos le oyeron hablar así y siguieron a Jesús.
Then Jesus, turning around and seeing them following him, said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi (which means in translation, Teacher), where do you live?”38 Jesús se volvió, y al ver que le seguían les dice: «¿Qué buscáis?» Ellos le respondieron: «Rabbí - que quiere decir, “Maestro” - ¿dónde vives?»
He said to them, “Come and see.” They went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about the tenth hour.39 Les respondió: «Venid y lo veréis». Fueron, pues, vieron dónde vivía y se quedaron con él aquel día. Era más o menos la hora décima.
And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard about him from John and had followed him.40 Andrés, el hermano de Simón Pedro, era uno de los dos que habían oído a Juan y habían seguido a Jesús.
First, he found his brother Simon, and he said to him, “We have found the Messiah,” (which is translated as the Christ).41 Este se encuentra primeramente con su hermano Simón y le dice: «Hemos encontrado al Mesías» - que quiere decir, Cristo.
And he led him to Jesus. And Jesus, gazing at him, said: “You are Simon, son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas,” (which is translated as Peter).42 Y le llevó donde Jesús. Jesús, fijando su mirada en él, le dijo: «Tú eres Simón, el hijo de Juan; tú te llamarás Cefas» - que quiere decir, “Piedra”.
On the next day, he wanted to go into Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”43 Al día siguiente, Jesús quiso partir para Galilea. Se encuentra con Felipe y le dice: «Sígueme».
Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.44 Felipe era de Bestsaida, de la ciudad de Andrés y Pedro.
Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the Law and the Prophets: Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”45 Felipe se encuentra con Natanael y le dice: «Ese del que escribió Moisés en la Ley, y también los profetas, lo hemos encontrado: Jesús el hijo de José, el de Nazaret».
And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good be from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”46 Le respondió Natanael: «¿De Nazaret puede haber cosa buena?» Le dice Felipe: «Ven y lo verás».
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, and he said about him, “Behold, an Israelite in whom truly there is no deceit.”47 Vio Jesús que se acercaba Natanael y dijo de él: «Ahí tenéis a un israelita de verdad, en quien no hay engaño».
Nathanael said to him, “From where do you know me?” Jesus responded and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”48 Le dice Natanael: «¿De qué me conoces?» Le respondió Jesús: «Antes de que Felipe te llamara, cuando estabas debajo de la higuera, te vi».
Nathanael answered him and said: “Rabbi, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel.”49 Le respondió Natanael: «Rabbí, tú eres el Hijo de Dios, tú eres el Rey de Israel».
Jesus responded and said to him: “Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, you believe. Greater things than these, you will see.”50 Jesús le contestó: «¿Por haberte dicho que te vi debajo de la higuera, crees? Has de ver cosas mayores».
And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the Angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man.”51 Y le añadió: «En verdad, en verdad os digo: veréis el cielo abierto y a los ángeles de Dios subir y bajar sobre el Hijo del hombre».
