“Pay attention, lest you perform your justice before men, in order to be seen by them; otherwise you shall not have a reward with your Father, who is in heaven.1 'Be careful not to parade your uprightness in public to attract attention; otherwise you wil lose al rewardfrom your Father in heaven.
Therefore, when you give alms, do not choose to sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the towns, so that they may be honored by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.2 So when you give alms, do not have it trumpeted before you; this is what the hypocrites do in thesynagogues and in the streets to win human admiration. In truth I tel you, they have had their reward.
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,3 But when you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right is doing;
so that your almsgiving may be in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will repay you.4 your almsgiving must be secret, and your Father who sees al that is done in secret wil reward you.
And when you pray, you should not be like the hypocrites, who love standing in the synagogues and at the corners of the streets to pray, so that they may be seen by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.5 'And when you pray, do not imitate the hypocrites: they love to say their prayers standing up in thesynagogues and at the street corners for people to see them. In truth I tel you, they have had their reward.
But you, when you pray, enter into your room, and having shut the door, pray to your Father in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will repay you.6 But when you pray, go to your private room, shut yourself in, and so pray to your Father who is in thatsecret place, and your Father who sees al that is done in secret wil reward you.
And when praying, do not choose many words, as the pagans do. For they think that by their excess of words they might be heeded.7 'In your prayers do not babble as the gentiles do, for they think that by using many words they wil makethemselves heard.
Therefore, do not choose to imitate them. For your Father knows what your needs may be, even before you ask him.8 Do not be like them; your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Therefore, you shall pray in this way: Our Father, who is in heaven: May your name be kept holy.9 So you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be held holy,
May your kingdom come. May your will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth.10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us this day our life-sustaining bread.11 Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.12 And forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven those who are in debt to us.
And lead us not into temptation. But free us from evil. Amen.13 And do not put us to the test, but save us from the Evil One.
For if you will forgive men their sins, your heavenly Father also will forgive you your offenses.14 'Yes, if you forgive others their failings, your heavenly Father wil forgive you yours;
But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your sins.15 but if you do not forgive others, your Father wil not forgive your failings either.
And when you fast, do not choose to become gloomy, like the hypocrites. For they alter their faces, so that their fasting may be apparent to men. Amen I say to you, that they have received their reward.16 'When you are fasting, do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do: they go about lookingunsightly to let people know they are fasting. In truth I tel you, they have had their reward.
But as for you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,17 But when you fast, put scent on your head and wash your face,
so that your fasting will not be apparent to men, but to your Father, who is in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will repay you.18 so that no one will know you are fasting except your Father who sees al that is done in secret; andyour Father who sees al that is done in secret wil reward you.
Do not choose to store up for yourselves treasures on earth: where rust and moth consume, and where thieves break in and steal.19 'Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moth and woodworm destroy them andthieves can break in and steal.
Instead, store up for yourselves treasures in heaven: where neither rust nor moth consumes, and where thieves do not break in and steal.20 But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor woodworm destroys them andthieves cannot break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there also is your heart.21 For wherever your treasure is, there wil your heart be too.
The lamp of your body is your eye. If your eye is wholesome, your entire body will be filled with light.22 'The lamp of the body is the eye. It follows that if your eye is clear, your whole body will be fil ed withlight.
But if your eye has been corrupted, your entire body will be darkened. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great will that darkness be!23 But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be darkness. If then, the light inside you is darkened,what darkness that wil be!
No one is able to serve two masters. For either he will have hatred for the one, and love the other, or he will persevere with the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.24 'No one can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or beattached to the first and despise the second. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.
And so I say to you, do not be anxious about your life, as to what you will eat, nor about your body, as to what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?25 'That is why I am tel ing you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your bodyand what you are to wear. Surely life is more than food, and the body more than clothing!
Consider the birds of the air, how they neither sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of much greater value than they are?26 Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your heavenly Fatherfeeds them. Are you not worth much more than they are?
And which of you, by thinking, is able to add one cubit to his stature?27 Can any of you, however much you worry, add one single cubit to your span of life?
And as for clothing, why are you anxious? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither work nor weave.28 And why worry about clothing? Think of the flowers growing in the fields; they never have to work orspin;
But I say to you, that not even Solomon, in all his glory, was arrayed like one of these.29 yet I assure you that not even Solomon in al his royal robes was clothed like one of these.
So if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and cast into the oven tomorrow, how much more will he care for you, O little in faith?30 Now if that is how God clothes the wild flowers growing in the field which are there today and throwninto the furnace tomorrow, wil he not much more look after you, you who have so little faith?
Therefore, do not choose to be anxious, saying: ‘What shall we eat, and what shall we drink, and with what shall we be clothed?’31 So do not worry; do not say, "What are we to eat? What are we to drink? What are we to wear?"
For the Gentiles seek all these things. Yet your Father knows that you need all these things.32 It is the gentiles who set their hearts on al these things. Your heavenly Father knows you need themal .
Therefore, seek first the kingdom of God and his justice, and all these things shall be added to you as well.33 Set your hearts on his kingdom first, and on God's saving justice, and al these other things wil begiven you as wel .
Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow; for the future day will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its evil.”34 So do not worry about tomorrow: tomorrow wil take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of itsown.'
