1 And so, crying out, the entire crowd wept throughout that night.	1 Entonces la comunidad en pleno prorrumpió en fuertes gritos, y el pueblo lloró toda aquella noche.
2 And all the sons of Israel were murmuring against Moses and Aaron, saying:	2 Los israelitas protestaban contra Moisés y Aarón, y toda la comunidad les decía: ¡Ojalá hubiéramos muerto en Egipto! ¡Ojalá muriéramos en este desierto!
3 “If only we had died in Egypt,” and, “If only we would perish in this vast wilderness,” and, “May the Lord not lead us into this land, lest we fall by the sword, and our wives, as well as our children, be led away as captives. Is it not better to return to Egypt?”	3 ¿Por qué el Señor nos quiere hacer entrar en esa tierra donde caeremos bajo la espada? ¡Nuestras mujeres y nuestros hijos serán llevados como botín! ¡Más nos valdría regresar a Egipto!
4 And they said to one another, “Let us appoint our leader, and so return to Egypt.”	4 Y se decían unos a otros: «¡Elijamos un jefe y volvamos a Egipto!».
5 And when Moses and Aaron heard this, they fell prone on the ground in the sight of the multitude of the sons of Israel.	5 Moisés y Aarón cayeron con el rostro en tierra delante de toda la comunidad de los israelitas reunidos en asamblea.
6 Yet truly, Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who themselves had also viewed the land, tore their garments,	6 Pero Josué, hijo de Nun, y Caleb, hijo de Iefuné –que estaban entre los que habían explorado el país– rasgaron su ropa
7 and they said to the entire multitude of the sons of Israel: “The land that we circled through is very good.	7 y dijeron a toda la comunidad de los israelitas: «La tierra que hemos recorrido y explorado es extraordinariamente buena.
8 If the Lord will be gracious to us, he will lead us into it, and he will give us the land flowing with milk and honey.	8 Si el Señor nos favorece, nos hará entrar en esa tierra que mana leche y miel, y nos la dará.
9 Do not choose to be rebellious against the Lord. And do not fear the people of this land, for, like bread, so are we able to devour them. All protection has withdrawn from them. The Lord is with us. Do not be afraid.”	9 Pero no se rebelen contra el Señor, ni le tengan miedo a la gente del país, porque los venceremos fácilmente. Su sombra protectora se ha apartado de ellos; con nosotros, en cambio, está el Señor. ¡No les tengan miedo!».
10 And when the entire multitude cried out, and they wanted to crush them with stones, the glory of the Lord appeared, over the roof of the covenant, to all the sons of Israel.	10 Toda la comunidad amenazaba con matarlos a pedradas, cuando la gloria del Señor se manifestó a todos los israelitas en la Carpa del Encuentro.
11 And the Lord said to Moses: “How long will this people disparage me? How long will they refuse to believe me, despite all the signs that I have wrought before them?	11 Y el Señor dijo a Moisés: «¿Hasta cuándo este pueblo me seguirá despreciando? ¿Hasta cuándo no creerán en mí, a pesar de los signos que realicé en medio de ellos?
12 Therefore, I will strike them with a pestilence, and so I will consume them. But you I will make the ruler over a great nation, and one which is mightier than this one.”	12 Los voy a castigar con una peste y los voy a desheredar. De ti, en cambio, suscitaré una nación mucho más fuerte que ellos».
13 And Moses said to the Lord: “But then the Egyptians, from whose midst you led out this people,	13 Pero Moisés respondió al Señor: «Cuando oigan la noticia los egipcios –de cuyo país sacaste a este pueblo gracias a tu poder–
14 and the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that you, O Lord, are among this people, and that you are seen face to face, and that your cloud protects them, and that you go before them with a column of cloud by day, and a column of fire by night,	14 se la pasarán a los habitantes de esa tierra. Ellos han oído que tú, Señor, estás en medio de este pueblo; que te dejas ver claramente cuando tu nube se detiene sobre ellos; y que avanzas delante de ellos, de día en la columna de nube, y de noche en la columna de fuego.
15 may hear that you have killed so great a multitude, as if they were one man, and they may say:	15 Si haces morir a este pueblo como si fuera un solo hombre, las naciones que conocen tu fama, dirán:
16 ‘He was not able to lead the people into the land about which he had sworn. Therefore, he slew them in the wilderness.’	16 «El Señor era impotente para llevar a ese pueblo hasta la tierra que le había prometido con un juramento, y los mató en el desierto».
17 Therefore, may the strength of the Lord be magnified, just as you swore, saying:	17 Por eso, Señor, manifiesta la grandeza de tu poder, como tú lo has declarado, cuando dijiste:
18 ‘The Lord is patient and full of mercy, taking away iniquity and wickedness, and forsaking no one who is harmless. He visits the sins of the fathers upon the sons, to the third and fourth generation.’	18 «El Señor es lento para enojarse y está lleno de misericordia. El tolera la maldad y la rebeldía, pero no las deja impunes, sino que castiga la culpa de los padres en los hijos y en los nietos hasta la cuarta generación».
19 Forgive, I beg you, the sins of this people, according to the greatness of your mercy, just as you have been gracious to them in their journey from Egypt to this place.”	19 Perdona, por favor, la culpa de este pueblo según tu gran misericordia y como lo has venido tolerando desde Egipto hasta aquí».
20 And the Lord said: “I have forgiven them according to your word.	20 El Señor respondió: «Lo perdono, como tú me lo has pedido.
21 Also, as I live, the entire world shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.	21 Sin embargo –tan cierto como que yo vivo, y que la gloria del Señor llena toda la tierra–
22 And yet, all the men who have seen my majesty, and the signs that I have wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, and who have tested me ten times already, and yet have not obeyed my voice,	22 ninguno de los hombres que vieron mi gloria y los prodigios que realicé en Egipto y en el desierto, ninguno de los que ya me han puesto a prueba diez veces y no me han obedecido,
23 these shall not see the land, about which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who detracted me gaze upon it.	23 verá la tierra que prometí a sus padres con un juramento; no la verá ninguno de los que me han despreciado.
24 My servant Caleb, who, being full of another spirit, has followed me, I will lead into this land, through which he has wandered, and his offspring shall possess it.	24 En cuanto a mi servidor Caleb, por estar animado de otro espíritu y haberse mantenido fiel a mí, lo llevaré a la tierra donde ya entró una vez, y sus descendientes la poseerán.
25 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys. Tomorrow, move the camp and return into the wilderness, by the way of the Red Sea.”	25 Pero como los amalecitas y los cananeos ocupan el valle, den vuelta mañana y partan para el desierto por el camino del Mar Rojo».
26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:	26 Luego el Señor dijo a Moisés y a Aarón:
27 “How long will this very wicked multitude murmur against me? I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel.	27 «¿Hasta cuándo esta comunidad perversa va a seguir protestando contra mí? Ya escuché las incesantes protestas de los israelitas.
28 Therefore, say to them: As I live, says the Lord, as you spoke in my hearing, so will I do to you.	28 Por eso, diles: «Juro por mi vida, palabra del Señor, que los voy a tratar conforme a las palabras que ustedes han pronunciado.
29 In the wilderness, here shall your carcasses lie. All you who were numbered from twenty years and above, and who have murmured against me,	29 Por haber protestado contra mí, sus cadáveres quedarán tendidos en el desierto: los cadáveres de todos los registrados en el censo, de todos los que tienen más de veinte años.
30 you shall not enter into the land, over which I lifted up my hand to cause you to live there, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.	30 Ni uno solo entrará en la tierra donde juré establecerlos, salvo Caleb hijo de Iefuné y Josué hijo de Nun.
31 But your little ones, about whom you said that they would be a prey to the enemies, I will lead them in, so that they may see the land that has displeased you.	31 A sus hijos, en cambio, a los que ustedes decían que iban a ser llevados como botín, sí los haré entrar; ellos conocerán la tierra que ustedes han despreciado.
32 Your carcasses shall lie in the wilderness.	32 Pero los cadáveres de ustedes quedarán tendidos en este desierto.
33 Your sons shall wander in the desert for forty years, and they shall bear your fornication, until the carcasses of their fathers are consumed in the desert.	33 Mientras tanto, sus hijos andarán vagando por el desierto durante cuarenta años, sufriendo por las prostituciones de ustedes, hasta que el último cadáver quede tendido en el desierto.
34 According to the number of the forty days, during which you examined the land, one year shall be charged for each day. And so, for forty years you shall take back your iniquities, and you shall know my retribution.	34 Ustedes cargarán con su culpa durante cuarenta años, por los cuarenta días que emplearon en explorar la tierra: a razón de un año por cada día. Entonces conocerán lo que significa rebelarse contra mí.
35 For just as I have spoken, so shall I do, to this entire most wicked multitude, which has risen up together against me. In the wilderness, here shall it fade away and die.”	35 Así lo he dispuesto yo, el Señor. De esa manera trataré a toda esta comunidad perversa que se ha confabulado contra mí: hasta el último hombre morirá en este desierto».
36 Therefore, all the men, whom Moses had sent to contemplate the land, and who, having returned, had caused the entire multitude to murmur against him, disparaging the land as if it were evil,	36 Los hombres que Moisés envió a explorar el territorio –esos que al volver instigaron a toda la comunidad a protestar contra él, difundiendo falsos rumores
37 suffered death and were struck down in the sight of the Lord.	37 y propagando malas noticias acerca de la tierra– cayeron muertos en las presencia del Señor.
38 But only Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive, out of all those who had journeyed to examine the land.	38 De los que habían ido a explorar el territorio, solamente sobrevivieron Josué, hijo de Nun, y Caleb, hijo de Iefuné.
39 And Moses spoke all these words to all the sons of Israel, and the people mourned exceedingly.	39 Cuando Moisés repitió estas palabras a todos los israelitas, el pueblo quedó muy afligido.
40 And behold, rising up at first light, they climbed to the top of the mountain, and they said, “We are prepared to ascend to the place, about which the Lord has spoken, for we have sinned.”	40 Y a la madrugada del día siguiente subieron a la parte más alta de la montaña, diciendo: «Estamos preparados para ir al lugar que el Señor ha indicado, porque en realidad estábamos en un error».
41 And Moses said to them: “Why do you transgress the word of the Lord, merely because it will not result in prosperity for you?	41 Pero Moisés replicó: «¿Por qué están transgrediendo la orden del Señor? Eso no va a dar buen resultado.
42 Do not ascend, for the Lord is not with you, lest you be overthrown before your enemies.	42 No suban, y así no serán derrotados por sus enemigos, ya que el Señor no está en medio de ustedes.
43 The Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, by whose sword you shall be ruined, for you were not willing to consent to the Lord, and so the Lord is not with you.”	43 Los amalecitas y los cananeos saldrán a hacerles frente, y ustedes caerán bajo la espada, porque se han apartado del Señor y él no estará con ustedes».
44 But they, having been darkened, ascended to the top of the mountain. But the ark of the testament of the Lord, and Moses, did not withdraw from the camp.	44 Pero ellos se obstinaron en subir a la cima de la montaña, a pesar de que ni el Arca de la Alianza del Señor ni Moisés se movieron del campamento.
45 And the Amalekites descended, along with those Canaanites who were living in the mountains. And so, striking and cutting them down, they pursued them all the way to Hormah.	45 Entonces bajaron los amalecitas y los cananeos que habitaban en aquella región montañosa, derrotaron a los israelitas y los fueron exterminando hasta Jormá.
