I, Nebuchadnezzar, was content in my house and prospering in my palace.1 Yo, Nabucodonosor, estaba tranquilo en mi casa, y satisfecho en mi palacio.
I saw a dream that terrified me, and my thoughts on my bed and the visions in my head disturbed me.2 Y tuve un sueño que me aterrorizó. Las obsesiones que tuve en mi lecho y las visiones de mi cabeza me aterraron.
And so a decree was established by me, that all of the wise men of Babylon should be brought in before me, and that they should reveal to me the answer to the dream.3 Entonces di orden de traer a mi presencia a todos los sabios de Babilonia para que me dieran a conocer la interpretación del sueño.
Then the seers, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers entered, and I explained about the dream in their presence, but they did not reveal its answer to me.4 Vinieron los magos, adivinos, caldeos y astrólogos y, en su presencia, conté el sueño, pero su interpretación no me la dieron.
And then their colleague came in before me, Daniel, (whose name is Belteshazzar according to the name of my god,) who has the spirit of the holy gods within his very self, and I told the dream directly to him.5 Después se presentó ante mí Daniel, por sobrenombre Beltsassar, según el nombre de mi dios, en quien reside el espíritu de los dioses santos. Yo le conté el sueño:
Belteshazzar, leader of the seers, since I know that you have in you the spirit of the holy gods, and that no mystery is unreachable to you, explain to me the visions of my dreams, which I saw, and the solution to them.6 «Beltsassar, jefe de los magos, ya sé que tú posees el espíritu de los dioses santos y que ningún misterio ofrece para ti dificultad: mira el sueño que he tenido; dime su interpretación.
This was the vision of my head on my bed. I looked, and behold, a tree in the middle of the earth, and its height was exceedingly great.7 «En mi lecho, contemplaba las visiones de mi cabeza: «Un árbol había en el centro de la tierra, de altura muy grande.
The tree was great and strong, and its height reached up to heaven. It could be seen all the way to the ends of the entire earth.8 El árbol creció, se hizo corpulento, su altura llegaba hasta el cielo, su expansión, hasta los confines de la tierra.
Its leaves were very beautiful, and its fruit was very abundant, and in it was food for the whole world. Under it, animals and beasts were dwelling, and in its branches, the birds of the sky were sheltered, and from it, all flesh was fed.9 Era hermoso su ramaje, abundante su fruto; había en él comida para todos, a su sombra se cobijaban las bestias del campo, en sus ramas anidaban los pájaros del cielo, y toda carne se alimentaba de él.
I saw in the vision of my head upon my blanket, and behold, a watcher and a holy one descended from heaven.10 Yo contemplaba, en mi lecho, las visiones de mi cabeza. En esto, un Vigilante, un santo, bajaba del cielo.
He cried out loudly, and he said this: “Cut down the tree and prune its branches; shake off its leaves and scatter its fruits; let flee the beasts, which are under it, and the birds from its branches.11 Con recia voz gritaba así: “Abatid el árbol, cortad sus ramas, arrancad sus hojas, tirad sus frutos; váyanse las bestias de debajo de él, y los pájaros de sus ramas.
Nevertheless, leave the stump of its roots in the earth, and let it be bound with a band of iron and brass among the plants, which are close by, and let it be touched by the dew of heaven, and let its place be with the wild animals among the plants of the earth.12 Pero dejad en tierra tocón y raíces con ataduras de hierro y bronce, entre la hierba del campo. Sea bañado del rocío del cielo y comparta con las bestias la hierba de la tierra.
Let his heart be changed from being human, and let the heart of a wild animal be given to him, and let seven periods of time pass over him.13 Deje de ser su corazón de hombre, désele un corazón de bestia y pasen por él siete tiempos.
This is the decree from the judgment of the watchers, and the decision and proclamation of the holy ones, until the living shall know that the Supreme One is ruler in the kingdom of men, and that he will give it to whomever he wills, and he will appoint the lowest man over it.”14 Es la sentencia dictada por los Vigilantes, la cuestión decidida por los Santos, para que sepa todo ser viviente que el Altísimo domina sobre el reino de los hombres: se lo da a quien le place y exalta al más humilde de los hombres.”»
I, king Nebuchadnezzar, saw this dream. And so you, Belteshazzar, must quickly explain to me the interpretation because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to declare the meaning of it to me. But you are able because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.15 «Tal es el sueño que he tenido yo, el rey Nabucodonosor. Tú, Beltsassar, dime su interpretación, ya que ninguno de los sabios de mi reino ha podido darme a conocer su interpretación; pero tú puedes, porque en ti reside el espíritu de los dioses santos».
Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, began silently to think within himself for about one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. But the king responded, saying, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream and its interpretation disturb you.” Belteshazzar answered and said, “My lord, the dream is for those who hate you, and its interpretation may be for your enemies.16 Entonces Daniel, por sobrenombre Beltsassar, quedó un instante aturdido y turbado en sus pensamientos. El rey tomó la palabra y dijo: «Beltsassar, no te turbe este sueño y su interpretación». Respondió Beltsassar: «¡ Oh mi señor, sea este sueño para tus enemigos y su interpretación para tus adversarios!
The tree that you saw was lofty and strong; its height reached toward heaven, and it could be seen throughout the whole world.17 Ese árbol que has visto, que se hizo grande y corpulento, cuya altura llegaba hasta el cielo y que era visible en toda la tierra,
And its branches were very beautiful, and its fruit very abundant, and in it was food for all. Under it, dwelt the beasts of the field, and in its branches, the birds of the air stayed.18 que tenía hermoso ramaje y abundante fruto, en el que había alimento para todos, bajo el cual se cobijaban las bestias del campo y en cuyas ramas anidaban los pájaros del cielo,
It is you, O king, who has been greatly esteemed, and you have grown strong. And you have increased your power, and it reaches towards heaven, and your rule is to the ends of the whole earth.19 eres tú, oh rey, que te has hecho grande y poderoso, cuya grandeza ha crecido y ha llegado hasta el cielo, y cuyo dominio se extiende hasta los confines de la tierra.
Yet the king also saw a watcher and a holy one descend from heaven and say: ‘Cut down the tree and scatter it; however, leave the stump of its roots in the earth, and let it be bound with iron and brass, among the surrounding plants, and let it be sprinkled with the dew of heaven, and let his feeding be with the wild beasts, until seven periods of time pass over him.’20 «En cuanto a lo que ha visto el rey: un Vigilante, un santo que bajaba del cielo y decía: “Abatid el árbol, destruidlo, pero el tocón y sus raíces dejadlos en tierra, con ataduras de hierro y bronce, entre la hierba del campo, y sea bañado del rocío del cielo y comparta la suerte con las bestias del campo hasta que hayan pasado por él siete tiempos”,
This is the interpretation of the judgment of the Most High, which has reached my lord, the king.21 ésta es su interpretación, oh rey, y el decreto del Altísimo que ha tocado a mi señor el rey:
They will expel you from among men, and your dwelling will be with the beasts and the wild animals, and you will eat hay like an ox, and you will be drenched with the dew of heaven. Likewise, seven periods of time will pass over you, until you know that the Supreme One rules over the kingdom of men, and he gives it to whomever he wills.22 «Serás arrojado de entre los hombres y con las bestias del campo morarás; hierba, como los bueyes, tendrás por comida, y serás bañado del rocío del cielo; siete tiempos pasarán por ti, hasta que reconozcas que el Altísimo domina sobre el imperio de los hombres y que se lo da a quien le place.
But, since he commanded that the stump of its roots, that is, of the tree, should be left behind, your kingdom will be left for you, after you have realized that power is from divinity.23 «Y la orden de dejar el tocón y las raíces del árbol, significa que tu reino se te conservará hasta que hayas reconocido que todo poder viene del Cielo.
Because of this, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you. And redeem your sins with alms, and your iniquities with mercy towards the poor. Perhaps he will forgive your offenses.”24 Por eso, oh rey, acepta mi consejo: rompe tus pecados con obras de justicia y tus iniquidades con misericordia para con los pobres, para que tu ventura sea larga».
All these things came upon king Nebuchadnezzar.25 Todo esto le sobrevino al rey Nabucodonosor.
After the end of twelve months, he was taking a walk in the palace of Babylon.26 Doce meses después, paseándose por la terraza del palacio real de Babilonia,
And the king spoke out loud, saying, “Isn’t this the great Babylon, which I have built, as the home of the kingdom, by the strength of my power and in the glory of my excellence?”27 iba diciendo el rey: «¿No es ésta la gran Babilonia que yo he edificado como mi residencia real, con el poder de mi fuerza y para la gloria de mi majestad?»
And while the words were still in the king’s mouth, a voice rushed down from heaven, “To you, O king Nebuchadnezzar, it is said: ‘Your kingdom will be taken away from you,28 Aún estaban estas palabras en la boca del rey, cuando una voz cayó del cielo: «¡A ti se te habla, rey Nabucodonosor! La realeza se te ha ido.
and they will expel you from among men, and your dwelling will be with the beasts and the wild animals. You will eat hay like an ox, and seven times will pass over you, until you know that the Supreme One rules in the kingdom of men, and he gives it to whomever he wills.’
The same hour, the sentence was fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar, and he was driven away from among men, and he ate hay like an ox, and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until his hair increased like the feathers of eagles, and his nails like those of birds.30 Y al punto se cumplió la palabra en Nabucodonosor: fue arrojado de entre los hombres, se alimentó de hierba como los bueyes, su cuerpo fue bañado del rocío del cielo, hasta crecerle sus cabellos como plumas de águila y sus uñas como las de las aves.
Therefore, at the end of these days, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my mind was restored to me. And I blessed the Most High, and I praised and glorified him who lives forever. For his power is an everlasting power, and his kingdom is from generation to generation.31 «Al cabo del tiempo fijado, yo, Nabucodonosor, levanté los ojos al cielo, y la razón volvió a mí; entonces bendije al Altísimo, alabando y exaltando al que vive eternamente, cuyo imperio es un imperio eterno, y cuyo reino dura por todas las generaciones.
And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing before him. For he acts according to his own will, with the inhabitants of the earth just as with the holy inhabitants of heaven.
At the same time, my mind returned to me, and I arrived at the honor and glory of my kingdom. And my appearance was given back to me. And my nobles and my magistrates needed me. And I was restored to my kingdom, and even greater majesty was added to me.33 «En aquel momento, la razón volvió a mí, y para gloria de mi realeza volvieron también a mí majestad y esplendor; mis consejeros y mis grandes me reclamaron, se me restableció en mi reino, y se me dio una grandeza todavía mayor.
Therefore I, Nebuchadnezzar, now praise, and magnify, and glorify the King of heaven, because all his works and the judgments of his way are true, and those who go forth in arrogance, he is able to bring low.34 Ahora, pues, yo, Nabucodonosor, alabo, exalto y glorifico al Rey del Cielo, porque sus obras todas son verdad, justicia todos sus caminos; él sabe humillar a los que caminan con orgullo».
