I am the Lord your God. You shall not make for yourselves an idol or a graven image. Neither shall you erect a monument, or set up a conspicuous stone in your land, in order that you may adore it. For I am the Lord your God.1 ' "You wil not make idols for yourselves; you will not erect statues or cultic stones, or erect carvedstones in your country, for you to worship: for I, Yahweh, am your God.
Observe my Sabbaths, and be fearful toward my Sanctuary. I am the Lord.2 You will keep my Sabbaths and revere my sanctuary. I am Yahweh.
If you will walk in my precepts, and observe my commandments, and accomplish them, I will give to you rain in its time,3 "If you live according to my laws, if you keep my commandments and put them into practice,
and the ground shall bring forth its seedlings, and the trees shall be filled again with fruit.4 I shal give you the rain you need at the right time; the soil wil yield its produce and the trees of thecountryside their fruit;
The threshing of the harvest shall last until the vintage, and the vintage shall overtake the sowing. And you shall eat your bread to fullness, and you shall live in your land without fear.5 you wil thresh until vintage time and gather grapes until sowing time. You wil eat your fill of bread andlive secure in your land.
I will give peace to your most distant regions. You will sleep, and there will be no one to strike you with terror. I will take away harmful wild beasts, and the sword will not cross your borders.6 "I shall give peace in the land, and you wil go to sleep with no one to frighten you. I shal rid the land of beasts of prey. The sword wil not pass through your land.
You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall down at the sight of you.7 You will pursue your enemies and they wil fal before your sword;
Five of yours will pursue a hundred foreigners, and a hundred of you will pursue ten thousand. Your enemies will fall by the sword in your sight.8 five of you pursuing a hundred of them, one hundred pursuing ten thousand; and your enemies wil falbefore your sword.
I will look with favor upon you, and I will cause you to increase; you will be multiplied, and I will confirm my covenant with you.9 "I shall turn towards you, I shal make you fertile and make your numbers grow, and I shal uphold mycovenant with you.
You will eat the oldest of what is old, and, when what is new arrives, you will throw away what is old.10 "Having eaten al you need of last year's harvest, you will throw out the old to make room for the new.
I will set my tabernacle in your midst, and my soul will not cast you out.11 "I shal fix my home among you and never reject you.
I will walk among you, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people.12 I shall live among you; I shall be your God and you will be my people,
I am the Lord your God, who led you away from the land of the Egyptians, lest you serve them, and who broke the chains around your necks, so that you would walk upright.13 I, Yahweh your God, who brought you out of Egypt so that you should be their slaves no longer, andwho broke the bonds of your yoke and made you walk with head held high.
But if you will not listen to me, nor accomplish all of my commandments,14 "But if you wil not listen to me and do not put all these commandments into practice,
if you despise my laws, and disdain my judgments, so that you do not accomplish those things which have been established by me, and so that you lead my covenant away into nullification,15 if you reject my laws and detest my customs, and you break my covenant by not putting al mycommandments into practice,
then I also will do these things to you. I will quickly visit you with destitution, and burning heat, which will waste away your eyes, and consume your lives. In vain will you sow your seed, which will be devoured by your enemies.16 this is how I shal treat you: "I shal subject you to terror, consumption and fever, making you dim ofsight and short of breath. You wil sow your seed in vain, for your enemies wil eat it.
I will set my face against you, and you will fall down before your enemies, and you will be subjugated to those who hate you. You will flee, though no one pursues.17 I shall turn against you and you wil be defeated by your enemies. Your foes wil have the masteryover you, and you wil flee when no one is pursuing you.
But if you will not be obedient to me in this way, then I will add sevenfold to your chastisement, because of your sins.18 "And if, in spite of this, you will not listen to me, I shal punish you seven times over for your sins.
And I will crush the pride in your hardness, and I will give to you heaven above like iron, and the earth below like brass.19 I shall break your proud strength. I shal make the sky like iron for you, and your soil like bronze.
Your labor will be consumed to no purpose; the land will not bring forth seedlings, nor will the trees provide their fruit.20 You wil wear out your strength in vain, your land will not yield its produce, nor the trees of the countrytheir fruit.
If you walk as an adversary to me, and if you are not willing to listen to me, I will add sevenfold to your plagues, because of your sins.21 "And if you go against me and wil not listen to me, I shall heap seven times more plagues on you foryour sins.
And I will send upon you the wild beasts of the field, which will consume you and your cattle, and which will reduce everything to paucity, and cause your roadways to become desolate.22 I shall send wild animals to attack you and rob you of your children, destroy your cattle and reduceyour numbers until your roads are deserted.
But if you are not willing to receive discipline in this way, and you still walk as an adversary to me,23 "And if that does not reform you, and you stil go against me,
likewise, I will advance against you as an adversary, and I will strike you seven times, because of your sins.24 then I shal go against you and punish you another seven times over for your sins.
And I will lead over you the sword that shall avenge my covenant. And when you will have fled into the cities, I will send a pestilence into your midst, and you will be delivered into the hands of your enemies.25 I shall bring the sword on you, which will avenge the covenant, and when you huddle inside yourtowns, I shal send pestilence among you, and you will fal into the enemy's clutches.
After this, I will have broken the staff of your bread, so that ten women bake bread in one oven, and distribute it by weight. And you shall eat and not be filled.26 When I take away the bread which supports you, ten women wil be able to bake your bread in oneoven and wil then dole your bread out by weight; you wil eat but not be satisfied.
Then, if you will not listen to me through these things, and you still walk against me,27 "And if, in spite of this, you will not listen to me but go against me,
then I also will advance against you, with an opposing fury, and I will chastise you with seven plagues, because of your sins:28 I shall go against you in fury and punish you seven times over for your sins.
so much so that you will eat the flesh of your sons and your daughters.29 You wil eat the flesh of your own sons, you wil eat the flesh of your own daughters.
I will destroy your high places, and I will break apart your false images. You will fall among the ruins of your idols, and my soul will abominate you:30 I shall destroy your high places and smash your incense-altars; I shal pile your corpses on thecorpses of your foul idols and shall reject you.
so much so that I will reduce your cities to a wilderness, and I will make your Sanctuaries desolate, and I will no longer accept the most sweet odors.31 I shall reduce your cities to ruins; I shal lay waste your sanctuary and refuse to inhale from yousmel s intended to please.
And I will utterly ruin your land, and your enemies shall be stupefied at it, when they will have become its inhabitants.32 I shall make such a desolation of the country that your enemies who come to live there wil beappal ed by it.
Then I will scatter you among the Gentiles, and I will unsheathe the sword after you. And your land will be deserted, and your cities will be demolished.33 And I shal scatter you among the nations. I shal unsheathe the sword against you, reducing yourcountry to desert and your towns to ruins.
Then the land will be pleased by her Sabbaths, throughout all the days of her solitude. So, while you will be34 Then the country wil indeed observe its Sabbaths, al the while it lies deserted, while you are in thecountry of your enemies. Then indeed the country wil rest and observe its Sabbaths.
in the land of the enemy, she will worship and rest in the Sabbath of her solitude, because she will not have rested in your Sabbaths, when you lived in her.35 And as it lies deserted it will rest, as it never did on your Sabbaths when you were living there.
And whoever of you will remain, I will send terror into their hearts in the regions of their enemies. The sound of a flying leaf will terrify them, and so they will flee, as if from the sword. They will fall, though no one pursues.36 I shall strike such fear into the hearts of those of you who survive in the countries of their enemiesthat the sound of a fal ing leaf will set them fleeing; they wil flee as though fleeing from the sword, and fal whenno one is pursuing.
And they will each fall upon their brothers, as if they were fleeing from wars; no one among you will dare to resist your foes.37 They will stumble over one another as though fleeing before the sword, when no one is pursuing. You wil be powerless to stand up to your enemies;
You will perish among the Gentiles, and the land of the enemy will consume you.38 you wil perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies wil swal ow you up.
But if some few of these still remain, they shall waste away in their iniquities, in the land of their enemies, and they will be afflicted, because of the sins of their fathers and their own sins,39 Those of you who survive wil pine away in their guilt in the countries of their enemies and, bearingthe guilt of their ancestors too, wil pine away like them.
until they confess their iniquities, and those of their ancestors, by which they have transgressed against me and walked as adversaries to me.40 "Then they shal admit their guilt and that of their ancestors and their infidelities against me, andfurther, their setting themselves against me.
Therefore, I also will walk against them, and I will lead them into a hostile land, until their uncircumcised mind shall be ashamed. Then shall they pray on behalf of their impiety.41 "I in my turn wil go against them and bring them into the land of their enemies. Then theiruncircumcised hearts wil grow humble and then they wil accept the punishment for their guilt.
And I will remember my covenant, which I formed with Jacob, and Isaac, and Abraham. I will also remember the land,42 I shall remember my covenant with Jacob, I shal remember my covenant with Isaac and mycovenant with Abraham; and I shal remember the country too.
which, when she will be left behind by them, shall be pleased by her Sabbaths, enduring solitude because of them. Yet truly, they shall pray for their sins, because they cast aside my judgments, and they despised my laws.43 "Abandoned, the country wil keep its Sabbaths, as it lies deserted in their absence, and they wilhave to accept the punishment for their guilt, since they detested my customs and rejected my laws.
And even after so much, when they were in the land of their enemy, I did not cast them off entirely, and I did not so despise them that they would be consumed, nor so that I would nullify my covenant with them. For I am the Lord their God.44 "Yet, in spite of al this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I shall not so utterly reject ordetest them as to destroy them completely and break my covenant with them; for I am Yahweh their God.
And I will remember my original covenant, when I led them away from the land of Egypt, in the sight of the Gentiles, so as to be their God. I am the Lord. These are the judgments, and precepts, and laws, which the Lord has granted between himself and the sons of Israel, on mount Sinai, by the hand of Moses.45 For their sake I shall remember the covenant I made with those first generations that I brought out ofEgypt while other nations watched, so that I should be their God, I, Yahweh." '
Such were the decrees, customs and laws which Yahweh established between himself and theIsraelites on Mount Sinai through Moses.
