CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
Woe to the crown of arrogance, to the inebriated of Ephraim, and to the falling flower, the glory of his exultation, to those who were at the top of the very fat valley, staggering from wine.1 ¡Ay de la soberbia corona de los ebrios de Efraím, y de la flor marchita que lucen como adorno, sobre lo alto del valle fértil! ¡Ay de ustedes, los volteados por el vino!
Behold, the Lord is powerful and steadfast, like a storm of hail, like a crushing whirlwind, like the force of many waters, inundating, sent forth over a spacious land.2 Miren, el Señor tiene a un hombre fuerte y poderoso: como tormenta de granizo y tempestad arrasadora, como tormenta de aguas impetuosas, torrenciales, él lo echa todo por tierra violentamente
The arrogant crown of the inebriated of Ephraim will be trampled under foot.3 Con ambos pies será pisoteada la soberbia corona de los ebrios de Efraím.
And the falling flower, the glory of his exultation, who is at the summit of the fat valley, will be like a premature fruit before the ripeness of autumn, which, when the onlooker beholds it, as soon he takes it in his hand, he will devour it.4 Y la flor marchita que lucen como adorno, sobre lo alto del valle fértil, será como una breva antes del verano: el primero que la ve, apenas la tiene en la mano, se la traga.
In that day, the Lord of hosts will be the crown of glory and the wreath of exultation for the remnant of his people.5 Aquel día, el Señor de los ejércitos será una espléndida corona y una diadema de gloria para el resto de su pueblo;
And he will be the spirit of judgment for those who sit in judgment, and the strength of those who return from war to the gates.6 inspirará la justicia a los que se sientan en el tribunal, y dará fortaleza a los que rechazan el asalto a las puertas.
Yet truly, these also have been ignorant due to wine, and they have gone astray due to inebriation. The priest and the prophet have been ignorant because of inebriation. They have been absorbed by wine. They have staggered in drunkenness. They have not known the One who sees. They have been ignorant of judgment.7 Estos también se extravían por el vino y van dando tumbos por la bebida: sacerdote y profeta se extravían por la bebida, se aturden con el vino, van dando tumbos por la bebida, se extravían en la visión, titubean en la decisión.
For all the tables have been filled with vomit and filth, so much so that there was no place left.8 ¡Sí, todas las mesas están llenas de vómitos inmundos, no queda espacio limpio!
To whom will he teach knowledge? And to whom will he grant an understanding of what is heard? To those who have been weaned from the milk, who have been pulled away from the breasts.9 «¿A quién pretende instruir y hacerle comprender lo que él oye? ¿A niños recién destetados, que acaban de dejar el pecho?
So then: command, and command again; command, and command again; expect, and expect again; a little here, and a little there.10 Porque todo no es más que: sau lasau, sau lasau. cau lacau, cau lacau, un poco aquí, otro poco allí».
For with the speech of lips and with a different language, he will speak to this people.11 Ahora bien: en un lenguaje balbuciente y en una lengua extranjera, el Señor hablará a este pueblo,
He said to them: “This is my rest. Refresh the weary,” and, “This is my refreshment.” And yet they were unwilling to listen.12 al que le dijo una vez: «Este es el descanso, hagan descansar al exhausto, aquí está la tranquilidad». ¡Pero ellos no quisieron escuchar!
And so, the word of the Lord to them will be: “Command, and command again; command, and command again; expect, and expect again; a little here, and a little there,” so that they may go forward and fall backward, and so that they may be broken and ensnared and captured.13 Entonces la palabra del Señor les sonará así: sau lasau, sau lasau, cau lacau, cau lacau, un poco aquí, otro poco allí, a fin de que caigan de espaldas al caminar, se destrocen y queden enredados en la trampa.
Because of this, listen to the word of the Lord, you mocking men, who lord it over my people who are at Jerusalem.14 Por eso, escuchen la palabra del Señor, ustedes, gente burlona, dominadores de este pueblo que está en Jerusalén.
For you have said: “We struck a deal with death, and we formed a pact with Hell. When the inundating scourge passes through, it will not overwhelm us. For we have placed our hope in lies, and we are protected by what is false.”15 Ustedes dicen: «Hemos hecho una alianza con la Muerte, hemos establecido un pacto con el Abismo. Cuando pase el flagelo desencadenado. no nos alcanzará, porque hemos hecho de la mentira un refugio y nos hemos amparado en el engaño».
For this reason, thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will set a stone within the foundations of Zion, a tested stone, a cornerstone, a precious stone, which has been established in the foundation: whoever trusts in him need not hurry.16 Por eso, así habla el Señor: Miren que yo pongo una piedra en Sión, una piedra a toda prueba, una piedra angular, escogida, bien cimentada: el que tenga fe no vacilará.
And I will establish judgment in weights, and justice in measures. And a hailstorm will overturn hope in what is false; and waters will inundate its protection.17 Yo usaré el derecho como medida y la justicia como plomada. El granizo barrerá el refugio de la mentira y las aguas inundarán el escondite.
And your deal with death will be abolished, and your pact with Hell will not stand. When the inundating scourge passes through, you will be trampled down by it.18 La alianza que hicieron con la Muerte será anulada y no se mantendrá el pacto con el Abismo. Cuando pase el flagelo desencadenado, serán aplastados:
Whenever it passes through, it will take you away. For, at first light of morning, it will pass through, in the day and in the night, and vexation alone will make you understand what you hear.19 los arrollará cada vez que pase, porque pasará una mañana tras otra, de día y de noche. y será algo terrible comprender el mensaje
For the bed has been narrowed, so much so that one alone would fall out, and the short blanket is not able to cover two.20 El lecho será demasiado corto para estirarse, la manta demasiado estrecha para envolverse.
For the Lord will stand, just as at the mountain of divisions. He will be angry, just as in the valley which is in Gibeon, so that he may accomplish his work, his strange work, so that he may complete his work, his work which is foreign even to him.21 ¡Sí, el Señor se alzará como en el monte Parasím, se enfurecerá como en el valle de Gabaón, para realizar su obra, una obra extraña para ejecutar su tarea, una tarea inaudita.
And now, do not be willing to mock, lest your chains be tightened. For I have heard, from the Lord, the God of hosts, about the consummation and the abridgement concerning the entire earth.22 Por lo tanto, dejen de burlarse, no sea que se aprieten más las ataduras porque es un decreto de exterminio el que yo escuché de parte del Señor de los ejércitos contra todo el país.
Pay close attention, and listen to my voice! Attend and hear my eloquence!23 ¡Presten oído y escuchen mi voz, estén atentos y oigan mi palabra!
Would the plowman, after plowing all day so that he may sow, instead cut open and hoe his soil?24 ¿Acaso el que ara para sembrar se pasa todo el día arando, abriendo surcos y rastrillando su terreno?
Will he not, when he has made the surface level, sow coriander, and scatter cumin, and plant wheat in rows, and barley, and millet, and vetch in their places?25 Una vez igualada la superficie, ¿no siembra el hinojo y esparce el comino, planta el trigo en hileras, la cebada en el lugar señalado y la espelta en sus linderos?
For he will be instructed in judgment; his God will teach him.26 El que le enseña estas reglas, el que lo instruye, es su Dios.
For coriander cannot be threshed with a saw, and a cartwheel cannot revolve over cumin. Instead, coriander is shaken out with a stick, and cumin with a staff.27 El hinojo no se trilla con el rastrillo, no se pasa sobre el comino la rueda del carro: el hinojo se golpea con la vara y el comino con el bastón.
But grain for bread must be crushed. Truly, the thresher cannot thresh it unceasingly, and the cartwheel can neither disrupt it, nor break it with its surface.28 ¿Se tritura el grano? No, no se lo trilla indefinidamente, se hace girar la rueda del carro, se lo machaca, pero no se lo tritura.
And this has gone forth from the Lord, the God of hosts, so that he may accomplish his miraculous plan and magnify justice.29 También esto procede del Señor de los ejércitos, admirable por su consejo y grande por su destreza.
