Sirach 20

1 How much better is it to reprove, than to become angry, so as not to hinder him who may confess in prayer.	1 Quanto meglio è il riprendere che il covar ira, e il non impedir di parlare a chi confessa [il suo torto].
2 The lust of an eunuch will deflower a young maiden;	2 [Quale] la libidine d'un eunuco [che] vuol sverginare una giovinetta,
3 similar is he who by violence gives an iniquitous judgment.	3 tale è chi con la violenza fa iniquo giudizio.
4 How good it is, when you are corrected, to show contrition! For in this way, you will escape deliberate sin.	4 Quant'è bello, quando s'è ripresi, mostrar pentimento! perchè sfuggirai cosi il peccato volontario.
5 There is one who, by remaining silent, is found to be wise. And there is another who is hateful and who provokes by speaking out.	5 C'è chi tace e appare sapiente, e c'è chi è odioso per il suo troppo ciarlare.
6 There is one who, not having the understanding to speak, remains silent. And there is another who remains silent, knowing the proper time.	6 C'è chi tace perchè non sa che dire, e c'è chi tace perchè conosce il momento opportuno.
7 A wise man will remain silent until the proper time. But an unrestrained and imprudent person will not heed the times.	7 L'uomo saggio tacerà fino al momento buono, ma il fanfarone e lo sciocco non bada al tempo.
8 Whoever uses many words will wound his own soul. And whoever unjustly takes authority upon himself will be hated.	8 Chi fa gran spreco di parole, danneggia se stesso; e chi s'arroga ingiusta licenza, sarà odiato.
9 There is advancement in evil for an undisciplined man, and there is a plan which turns to his detriment.	9 C'è fortuna ne' mali per taluno, e c'è guadagni che si volgono in danno.
10 There is a gift which is not helpful, and there is a gift, the repayment for which is double.	10 C'è doni che non [ti] portan vantaggio, e c'è doni che saran compensati al doppio.
11 There is a loss for the sake of boasting, and there is one who will lift up his head from lowliness.	11 C'è il decader provocato dal fasto, e c'è chi dall'umiliazione solleva la testa.
12 There is one who buys much for a small price, and who pays it back sevenfold.	12 C'è chi compra molto a poco prezzo, e lo sconta [poi] pagando il settuplo.
13 Anyone wise in words makes himself loved. But the graces of the foolish will be poured away.	13 Il saggio nel parlare si rende amabile; ma le moine degli stolti saran sprecate.
14 A gift from the unwise will not benefit you. For his gaze is divided, sevenfold.	14 Il dono dell'insensato [avaro] non ti gioverà, perchè egli ha sette occhi invece di uno!
15 He will give little, and reproach much. And the opening of his mouth is like a burning flame.	15 Poco dà e molto rinfaccia, e quando apre la bocca, gitta fiamme.
16 There is one who lends today and demands repayment tomorrow. A man such as this is hateful.	16 Oggi dà in prestito e domani ridomanda: odioso è un tal uomo!
17 A foolish man will not have a friend, and there will be no thanks for his good deeds.	17 Lo stolto non avrà amici, nè ci sarà riconoscenza per i suoi benefizi.
18 For those who eat his bread have a false tongue. How often and how many are those who will ridicule him!	18 Quei che mangian del suo pane son lingue false: quante volte e in quanti si faran beffe di lui!
19 For what he possesses, he does not distribute with correct understanding. And he acts similarly with what he does not possess.	19 Perchè non ha saputo discernere con retto giudizio quel che era da serbare, nè parimenti quel che non era da serbare.
20 The slip of a false tongue is like someone who falls upon pavement. Such a fall for the wicked will arrive quickly.	20 Le cadute della lingua fallace son come chi cada sul pavimento: cosi repentinamente sopravviene la ruina degli empi!
21 A disagreeable man is like a pointless fable; it will be continually in the mouth of the undisciplined.	21 L'uomo spiacente è come una favola inopportuna: sarà del continuo in bocca degl'ignoranti.
22 A parable from the mouth of a fool will be rejected. For he does not speak it at the proper time.	22 Una massima [proferita] dalla bocca dello stolto sarà rigettata, perchè non la dice a tempo debito.
23 There is one who is prevented from sinning by poverty, and in his rest, he will be vexed.	23 C'è chi è impedito di peccare per l'indigenza, e nel suo riposo si cruccia.
24 There is one who will lose his own soul because of pretense, and he will lose it by an example of imprudence. For by seeking the approval of another, he will destroy himself.	24 C'è chi rovina se stesso per vergogna, e per lo sguardo d'uno sciocco si rovina: per accezione di persone si perde.
25 There is one who, for the sake of what other’s think, makes a promise to a friend, and so he gains him as an enemy for no reason.	25 C'è chi per vergogna promette [troppo] all'amico e se ne fa gratuitamente un nemico.
26 A lie is a wicked disgrace to a man, and yet lies will be continually in the mouths of those without discipline.	26 Triste onta nell'uomo è la menzogna, e in bocca degl'Ignoranti sta del continuo.
27 A thief is better than a man who constantly lies. But both of them will inherit perdition.	27 È preferibile il ladro all'uomo assiduamente bugiardo; ma l'uno e l'altro andranno in malora.
28 The habits of lying men are without honor. And their shame is with them without ceasing.	28 La condotta de' mentitori è un disonore, e l'ignominia loro li accompagna sempre.
29 A wise man will benefit himself by his own words, and a prudent man will please the powerful.	29 Chi è saggio nel parlare, si porta avanti, e l'uomo prudente sarà accetto a' grandi.
30 Whoever works his land will raise high a stockpile of grain. And whoever works justice will himself be raised high. Yet truly, whoever pleases the powerful will escape unfair treatment.	30 Chi lavora la sua terra, farà alto il suo mucchio di biade e chi coltiva la giustizia sarà esaltato egli stesso: chi piace ai grandi sfuggirà l'ingiustizia.
31 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of judges, and silence their mouths, turning them aside from their task of correction.	31 I regali e i doni accecano gli occhi de' giudici, e, come una museruola in bocca, rattengono i loro biasimi,
32 Wisdom hidden, and treasure unseen: of what use is either of these?	32 La sapienza nascosta e il tesoro invisibile, che utilità hanno l'una e l'altro?
33 He who hides his foolishness is better than a man who conceals his wisdom.	33 Meglio chi nasconde la sua stoltezza, che chi occulta la sua sapienza.
