CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
Blessed is the man who has not slipped because of a word from his mouth, and who has not been stung by grief because of an offense.1 ¡Feliz el hombre que no ha faltado con su lengua ni es atormentado por el remordimiento!
Happy is he who does not have sadness in his mind, and who has not fallen away from his hope.2 ¡Feliz el que no tiene que reprocharse a sí mismo y no ve desvanecerse su esperanza!
Substance is senseless for a greedy and stingy man. And what would a spiteful man do with gold?3 ¿De qué le sirve la riqueza al mezquino y para qué tiene el avaro su fortuna.
Whoever acquires unjustly, according to his own mind, gathers for others. For another will spend his goods lavishly.4 El que acumula, privándose de todo, acumula para otros, y otros se darán buena vida con sus bienes.
Whoever is wicked to himself, to whom will he be good? For he will not take enjoyment in his own goods.5 El que es malo consigo mismo ¿con quién será bueno? Ni él mismo disfruta de su fortuna.
Whoever has ill will toward himself, nothing is more worthless than he is. But such is the reward of his wickedness.6 No hay nadie peor que el avaro consigo mismo, y ese es el justo pago de su maldad.
And if he does good, he does it ignorantly and unwillingly. And in the very end, he realizes his own malice.7 Si hace algún bien, lo hace por descuido, y termina por revelar su malicia.
The eye of the spiteful man is wicked, and he averts his face and despises his own soul.8 Es un malvado el que mira con envidia, el que da vuelta la cara y menosprecia a los demás.
The eye of the greedy man is insatiable in his portion of iniquity. He will not be satisfied until he has consumed his own soul, withering it away.9 El ojo del ambicioso no está satisfecho con su parte y la ruindad reseca el alma.
An evil eye is directed at evil things. And he will not be satisfied by bread; instead, he will be needy and grieving at his own table.10 El miserable mezquina el pan y tiene su mesa siempre vacía.
Son, if you have anything, do good to yourself, and offer worthy oblations to God.11 En la medida de tus recursos, vive bien, hijo mío, y presenta al Señor ofrendas dignas.
Remember that death has not been delayed, and that the covenant of the grave has been revealed to you. For the covenant of this world will pass away in death.12 Recuerda que la muerte no tardará y que el pacto del Abismo no te ha sido revelado.
Do good to your friend before you die. And according to your ability, extend your hand and give to the poor.13 Antes de morir, haz el bien a tu amigo y dale con largueza, en la medida de tus fuerzas.
Do not cheat yourself out of a good day, and do not let the smallest good gift pass you by.14 No te prives de un día agradable ni desaproveches tu parte de gozo legítimo.
Should you not leave it to others to divide your sorrows and labors by lot?15 ¿Acaso no dejarás a otro el fruto de tus trabajos, y el de tus fatigas, para que lo repartan en herencia?
Give, and receive, and justify your soul.16 Da y recibe, olvida tus preocupaciones, porque no hay que buscar delicias en el Abismo.
Before your passing, accomplish justice. For in death, there is no food to be found.17 Todo ser viviente envejece como un vestido, porque está en pie la antigua sentencia: «Tienes que morir».
All flesh grows old like the grass, and like the foliage that springs forth from a green tree.18 En el follaje de un árbol tupido, unas hojas caen y otras brotan: así son las generaciones de carne y de sangre, una muere y otra nace.
Some spring up, and others fall away. Such is the generation of flesh and blood. One is finished, and another is born.19 Toda obra corruptible desaparece y el que la hizo se irá con ella.
Every corruptible work will fail in the end. And its worker will go with it.20 ¡Feliz el hombre que se ocupa de la sabiduría y el que razona con inteligencia,
But every excellent work will be justified. And whoever worked it will be honored by it.21 el que reflexiona sobre los caminos de la sabiduría y penetra en sus secretos!
Blessed is the man who will abide in wisdom, and who will meditate on her righteousness, and who, in his mind, will consider the circumspection of God.22 El la sigue como un rastreador y se queda al acecho de sus pasos;
He considers her ways in his heart, and he finds understanding in her secrets. He goes after her like an investigator, and he is constant in her ways.23 espía por sus ventanas y escucha atentamente a sus puertas;
He gazes through her windows, and he listens at her door.24 busca albergue cerca de su casa y clava una estaca en sus muros;
He rests next to her house, and, fastening a peg in her walls, he sets up his cottage by her hands. And so, good things will find rest in his cottage as time passes.25 instala su carpa cerca de ella y se alberga en la mejor de las moradas;
He will station his sons under her covering, and he will abide under her branches.26 pone a sus hijos bajo el abrigo de ella y vive a la sombre de sus ramas:
He will be protected by her covering from the heat, and he will rest in her glory.27 ella lo protege del calor y él habita en su gloria.
