1 The words of the Gatherer, the son of the Vomiter. The vision that the man spoke. God is with him, and he, being strengthened by God and abiding with him, said:	1 Parole di colui, che aduna, figliuolo di lui, che messe fuora la sapienza. Visione raccontata da un personaggio, col quale sta Dio, e il quale avendo Dio abitante in se, che lo fortifica, ha detto:
2 “I am the most foolish among men, and the wisdom of men is not with me.	2 Io sono il più ignorante tragli uomini, e la sapienza degli uomini non istà meco.
3 I have not learned wisdom, and I have not known the knowledge of sanctity.	3 Io non ho apparata la sapienza, e non so nulla della scienza de' santi.
4 Who has ascended to heaven and also descended? Who has grasped the wind in his hands? Who has tied the waters together, as with a garment? Who has raised all the limits of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son, if you know?	4 Chi è che sia salito al cielo, e ne sia disceso? chi nelle sue mani contenue il vento? chi le acque ha ristrette come in un involto? chi ha data stabilità a tutte le parti della terra? qual è il nome di lui, e quale il nome del figliuolo di lui, se tu lo sai?
5 Every word of God is fire-tested. He is a bronze shield to those who hope in him.	5 La parola di Dio o tutta purgata col fuoco: egli è scudo per quelli, che sperano in lui.
6 Do not add anything to his words, lest you be reproved and be discovered to be a liar.	6 Non aggiungere un jota alle sue parole, affin di non essere accusato, e convinto di menzogna.
7 Two things I have asked of you; do not deny them to me before I die.	7 Due cose io ti ho domandato (o Signore) non negarle a me per quel, che mi resta di vita.
8 Remove, far from me, vanity and lying words. Give me neither begging, nor wealth. Apportion to me only the necessities of my life,	8 Allontana da me la vanità, e le parole di menzogna: Non darmi mendicità, né ricchezze, ma concedimi quel, che è necessario al mio vivere:
9 lest perhaps, being filled, I might be enticed into denial, and say: ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or, being compelled by destitution, I might steal, and then perjure myself in the name of my God.	9 Affinchè per disgrazia quand'io sia satollo non sia tentato a rinnegare, e dire: Chi o il Signore? ovvero spinto dalla necessità io non mi metta a rubare, e prenda invano il nome del mio Dio.
10 Do not accuse a servant to his lord, lest he curse you, and you fall.	10 Non accusare il servo dinanzi al suo padrone, affinchè egli forse non ti maledica, onde tu vada in perdizione!
11 There is a generation which curses their father, and which does not bless their mother.	11 Havvi una razza di uomini, che maledice suo padre, e non benedice sua madre.
12 There is a generation which seems pure to themselves, and yet they are not even washed from their filthiness.	12 Havvi una razza di uomini, che mondi sembrano a loro stessi; ma non sono però lavati dalle sozzure.
13 There is a generation, whose eyes have been elevated, and their eyelids are lifted on high.	13 Havvi una razza di uomini, che portano alti gli occhi, e le loro pupille altiere, e superbe.
14 There is a generation which has swords in place of teeth, and which commands their molars to devour the indigent from the earth and the poor from among men.	14 Havvi una generazione, la quale ha coltelli in cambio di denti, e lacera con sue mascelle, e divora i mendichi della terra, e i poveri tragli uomini.
15 The leech has two daughters, who say, ‘Bring, bring.’ Three things are insatiable, and a fourth never says ‘Enough’:	15 La mignatta ha due figlie, che di cono: Dammi, dammi. Tre cose sono insaziabili, e la quarta, che non dice mai: Basta.
16 Hell, and the mouth of the womb, and a land that is not filled with water. And truly, fire never says, ‘Enough.’	16 L'inferno, e la matrice, e la terra, che non si sazia di bere l'acqua: il fuoco poi non dice mai: Basta.
17 The eye of one who mocks his father and who despises the childbearing of his mother, let the ravens of the torrent tear it out, and let the sons of the eagles consume it.	17 A colui che schernisce il proprio padre, e disprezza i dolori della madre nel partorirlo, gli cavin l'occhio i corvi, che stan lungo i torrenti, e sei divorino i figliuoli dell'aquila.
18 Three things are difficult for me, and about a fourth, I am nearly ignorant:	18 Tre cose sono per me difficili ad intendersi, e una quarta mi è affatto ignota:
19 the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship in the middle of the sea, and the way of a man in adolescence.	19 La traccia dell'aquila nell'aria, la traccia di un serpente sulla pietra, la traccia di una nave in mezzo al mare, e la traccia dell'uomo nella adolescenza.
20 Such is the way also of an adulterous woman, who eats, and wiping her mouth, says: “I have done no evil.”	20 Tale è parimente la via della don na adultera, la quale mangia, e si ripulisce la bocca, e dice: Non ho fatto verun male.
21 By three things, the earth is moved, and a fourth it is not able to sustain:	21 Per tre cose è messa in commozione la terra, e alla quarta non può ella, reggere:
22 by a slave when he reigns, by the foolish when he has been filled with food,	22 (E messa in commozione) da uno schiavo, che arrivi a regnare, da uno stolto, quando è pieno di cibo:
23 by a hateful woman when she has been taken in matrimony, and by a handmaid when she has been heir to her mistress.	23 Da una donna odiosa, quando uno la ha sposata; e da una serva divenuta erede di sua padrona.
24 Four things are least upon the earth, and they are wiser than the wise:	24 Quattro cose delle più piccole sono sulla terra, e queste superano in sagezza i sapienti.
25 the ants, an infirm people who provide food for themselves at the harvest,	25 Le formiche, popolo debolissimo, il quale al tempo della messe si prepara il suo vitto:
26 the rabbit, a sickened people who make their bed upon the rock.	26 I conigli, razza paurosa, la quale pianta il suo covile nei massi:
27 The locust has no king, but they all depart by their troops.	27 Le cavallette non hanno re, e si muovono tutte divise in isquadroni:
28 The lizard supports itself on hands and dwells in the buildings of kings.	28 Lo stellione, che si regge sulle sue mani, e abita nelle case dei re.
29 There are three things that advance well, and a fourth that marches happily on:	29 Tre cose vi sono, che hanno bella andatura, e una quarta, che cammina magnificamente;
30 a lion, the strongest of beasts, who fears nothing that he meets,	30 Il lione, forte sopra tutti gli animali, non teme l'incontro di chicchessia;
31 a rooster prepared at the loins, likewise a ram, and a king, whom none can resist.	31 Il Gallo dai fianchi serrati, e l'ariete, e il re, a cui nissuno resiste.
32 There is one who has appeared foolish, after he was lifted up on high; for if he had understood, he would have placed his hand over his mouth.	32 V'ha chi è stato riconosciuto per istolto dopo che fu innalzato a posto sublime: perocché se avesse avuto intelletto si sarebbe messa la mano alla bocca.
33 But whoever strongly squeezes the udder to bring out the milk, presses out butter. And whoever violently blows his nose, brings out blood. And whoever provokes wrath, brings forth discord.”	33 Chi stringe con forza le poppe per trarne il latte, ne spreme il burro, e chi si soffia il naso con veemenza, ne cava il sangue; e chi provoca lo sdegno accende discordie.
