There was a man in the land of Uz named Job, and he was a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil.1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.
And there had been born to him seven sons and three daughters.2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.
And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, along with five hundred pairs of oxen and five hundred she-donkeys, and also a very large family. And this man was great among all the people of the east.3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.
And his sons went and made a feast by houses, each one on his day. And sending, they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them.4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.
And when the days of their feasting had been completed, Job sent to them and sanctified them, and, getting up at dawn, he offered holocausts for each one. For he said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and have not praised God in their hearts.” So Job did all the days.5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.
But on a certain day, when the sons of God came to attend in the presence of the Lord, Satan also arrived among them.6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.
The Lord said to him, “Where do you come from?” Answering, he said, “I have circled the land, and walked around in it.”7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'
And the Lord said to him, “Have you not considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the land, a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil.”8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'
Answering him, Satan said, “Does Job fear God to no purpose?9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?
Have you not fortified him, as well as his house and every one of his belongings around him, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession has increased in the land?10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.
But extend your hand a little, and touch all that he possesses, and see if he still praises you to your face.”11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'
Therefore, the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, everything that he has is in your hand, only do not extend your hand against him.” And Satan departed from the face of the Lord.12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.
So, on a certain day, when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine, in the house of their first-born brother,13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,
a messenger came to Job, who said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys were grazing beside them,14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,
and the Sabeans rushed in and carried away everything, and they struck the servants with the sword; and I alone evaded them to tell you.”15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'
And while he was still speaking, another arrived, and he said, “The fire of God fell from heaven, and, having struck the sheep and the servants, it consumed them; and I alone escaped to tell you.”16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'
And while he also was still speaking, another arrived, and he said, “The Chaldeans organized three attacks, and advanced on the camels and took them; and not only that, but they have struck the servants with the sword; and I alone fled to tell you.”17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'
He was still speaking, and behold, another entered, and he said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine in the house of their first-born brother,18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,
when suddenly a severe wind rushed forth from a region of the desert and shook the four corners of the house, which collapsed and crushed your children, and they are dead; and I alone escaped to tell you.”19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'
Then Job got up and tore his garments, and, having shaved his head, he collapsed on the ground, and worshipped,20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself
and he said, “Naked I departed from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Just as it pleased the Lord, so has it been done. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!
In all this, Job did not sin by his lips, nor did he speak any foolish thing against God.22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.
