1 Then Judith said to all the people: “Hear me, brothers. Suspend this head over our walls.	1 Judit les dijo: «Escuchadme, hermanos; tomad esta cabeza y colgadle en el saliente de nuestras murallas;
2 And, as soon as the sun rises, let everyone take up his weapons and go out to attack, not going down all the way, but only to seem as if making an assault.	2 y apenas despunte el alba y salga el sol sobre la tierra, empuñaréis cada uno vuestras armas y saldréis fuera de la ciudad todos los hombres capaces. Que se ponga uno al frente, como si intentarais bajar a la llanura, contra la avanzada de los asirios. Pero no bajéis.
3 Then the scouts will have to hurry to awaken their leader for the fight.	3 Los asirios tomarán sus armas y marcharán a su campamento para despertar a los jefes del ejército de Asiria. Correrán a la tienda de Holofernes, pero al no dar con él, quedarán aterrorizados y huirán ante vosotros.
4 And when their commanders rush into the tabernacle of Holofernes, and they find his headless body wallowing in his blood, fear will fall over them.	4 Entonces, vosotros y todos los habitantes del territorio de Israel, saldréis en su persecución y los abatiréis en la retirada.
5 And when you realize that they are fleeing, go after them in security, for the Lord will crush them under your feet.”	5 «Pero antes, traed aquí a Ajior el ammonita, para que vea y reconozca al que despreciaba a la casa de Israel, al que le envió a nosotros como destinado a la muerte».
6 Then Achior, seeing the power that the God of Israel had wrought, left behind the rituals of the Gentiles. He believed in God, and he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and he was placed among the people of Israel, and so were all the succession of his kindred, even until this present day.	6 Hicieron, pues, venir a Ajior desde la casa de Ozías. Al llegar y ver que uno de los hombres de la asamblea del pueblo tenía en la mano la cabeza de Holofernes, cayó al suelo, desvanecido.
7 And soon, at the rising of day, they suspended the head of Holofernes above the walls, and every man took up his weapons, and they went out with a great uproar and howling.	7 Cuando le reanimaron, se echó a los pies de Judit, se postró ante ella y dijo: «¡Bendita seas en todas las tiendas de Judá y en todas las naciones que, cuando oigan pronunciar tu nombre, se sentirán turbadas!»
8 When the scouts saw this, they rushed to the tent of Holofernes.	8 «Y ahora, cuéntame lo que has hecho durante este tiempo». Judit le contó, en medio del pueblo, todo cuanto había hecho, desde que salió hasta el momento en que les estaba hablando.
9 Moreover, those who were in the tent came and made a loud noise before the entrance to the bedchamber, hoping to awaken him by an attempt at skillful noise-making, not by intruding on him, so that Holofernes might be roused from sleep.	9 Cuando hubo acabado su relato, todo el pueblo lanzó grandes aclamaciones y en toda la ciudad resonaron los gritos de alegría.
10 For no one dared to knock, or to open and enter, the bedchamber of the powerful leader of the Assyrians.	10 Ajior, por su parte, viendo todo cuanto había hecho el Dios de Israel, creyó en él firmemente, se hizo circuncidar y quedó anexionado para siempre a la casa de Israel.
11 But when his commanders and tribunes had arrived, with all the chiefs of the army of the king of the Assyrians, they said to the chamberlains:	11 Apenas despuntó el alba, colgaron de la muralla la cabeza de Holofernes, tomaron las armas todos los hombres de Israel y salieron, por grupos, hacia las subidas.
12 “Enter and awaken him, for the mice have come out of their holes, intending to challenge us to fight.”	12 Al verlos los asirios, communicaron la novedad a sus oficiales, y éstos la fueron comunicando a sus estrategas y comandantes y a todos sus jefes,
13 Then Vagao, entering his bedchamber, stood before the curtain, and he made a clapping noise with his hands. For he suspected that he was sleeping with Judith.	13 hasta llegar a la tienda de Holofernes. Dijeron, pues, a su intendente general: «Despierta a nuestro señor, porque esos esclavos tienen la osadía de bajar a combatir contra nosotros, para hacerse exterminar completamente».
14 But when, with attentiveness, he perceived no motion of anyone reclining, he approached the curtain. And lifting it up, he saw the dead body of Holofernes, without a head, lying on the ground, soaked in his own blood. He cried out with a loud voice and weeping, and he tore his garments.	14 Entró, pues, Bagoas y dio palmadas ante la cortina de la tienda, porque suponía que Holofernes estaría durmiendo con Judit.
15 And he entered the tent of Judith and did not find her. And he ran out to the people,	15 Como nadie respondía, apartó la cortina, entró en el dormitorio, y lo encontró tendido sobre el umbral muerto y decapitado.
16 and he said: “One Hebrew woman has caused confusion in the house of Nebuchadnezzar the king. For behold, Holofernes lies on the ground, and his head is not with him.”	16 Dio entonces una gran voz, con gemido y llanto y fuertes alaridos, al tiempo que rasgaba sus vestiduras.
17 Now when the leaders of the army of the Assyrians had heard this, they all tore their garments, and an intolerable fear and trembling fell over them, and their minds were greatly disturbed.	17 Entró luego en la tienda en que se había aposentado Judit, y al no verla, se precipitó hacia la tropa gritando:
18 And there was an unprecedented outcry in the midst of their camp.	18 «¡Esas esclavas eran unas pérfidas! Una sola mujer hebrea ha llenado de vergüenza la casa del rey Nabucodonosor. ¡Mirad a Holofernes, derribado en tierra y decapitado!»
	19 Cuando los jefes del ejército asirio oyeron estas palabras, su ánimo quedó turbado hasta el extremo, rasgaron sus túnicas y lanzaron grandes gritos y voces por todo el campamento.
