1 And it happened that, when she had ceased to cry out to the Lord, she arose from the place where she lay prostrate before the Lord.	1 E dopo che ebbe compiuto di chiamare a Dio, levossi del luogo dove era stata prostrata dinanzi a Dio.
2 And she called her handmaid, and descending into her house, she took away from herself the haircloth, and she put away from herself the garments of her widowhood,	2 E chiamò Abra sua serva; e scendendo nella casa sua, levossi il cilicio, e spogliossi il vestimento vedovale.
3 and she washed her body, and she anointed herself with the best ointment, and she plaited the hair of her head, and she put a headdress on her head, and she clothed herself with the garments of her elegance, and she put sandals on her feet, and she put on her little bracelets, and lilies, and earrings, and rings, and she adorned herself with all her ornaments.	3 E lavò il corpo suo, e unsesi (con uno unguento odorifero fatto) di mirro ottimo, (e divisesi) e. discriminossi i capelli del suo capo, e puosesi (gli ornamenti e) la mitra sopra il capo, e vestissi dei vestimenti della sua letizia, e puosesi i calzamenti ornati nelli piedi suoi, e puosesi gli ornamenti del braccio diritto, e li gigli e gli ornamenti delle orecchie e gli anelli, e ornossi di tutti gli ornamenti suoi.
4 And also, the Lord conferred upon her a splendor. For all this dressing up did not proceed from sensuality, but from virtue. And therefore, the Lord increased this, her beauty, so that she appeared with incomparable honor before the eyes of all.	4 Alla quale anco il Signore gli diede uno maraviglioso splendore; e però che tutto questo ornamento non procedea da libidine, ma da virtù, e però il Signore moltiplicò in lei questa bellezza, acciò che negli occhii di tutti apparisse tale, quale simile in bellezza non si potesse trovare,
5 And so, she appointed to her handmaid a wineskin, and a vessel of oil, and parched grain, and dried figs, and bread, and cheese, and they departed.	5 E diede ad Abra sua ancilla lo vaso del vino e quello dell' olio, e lo ferculo fatto di farina, e lo cibo fatto di erbe, e lo pane e lo cacio; e andossene.
6 And when they came to the gate of the city, they found Uzziah and the elders of the city waiting.	6 Ed essendo venute alla porta della città, trovorono Ozia e li sacerdoti della città, che aspettavano.
7 And when they saw her, being astounded, they wondered at her surpassing beauty.	7 Li quali quando l'ebbero veduta, stupefatti molto, si maravigliorono della sua bellezza.
8 So, not questioning her at all, they dismissed her to go forth, saying: “May the God of our fathers give you grace, and may he strengthen all the advice of your heart with his virtue, so that Jerusalem may glory over you, and your name may be counted among the holy and the just.”	8 Non gli dimandando alcuna cosa, la lasciarono passare, dicendo: il Dio de' padri nostri ti dia grazia, e fortifichi tutto il consiglio del cuore tuo con la sua virtù; e Ierusalem riceva gloria sopra di te, e il tuo nome sia nel numero de' santi e de' giusti.
9 And those who were there, all with one voice, said: “Amen. Amen.”	9 E tutti quelli, che erano ivi, dissero con una voce così sia, così sia.
10 In truth, Judith was praying to the Lord as she crossed through the gates, she and her handmaid.	10 Iudit dunque, pregando il Signore, passò la porta, essa e Abra sua fanciulla.
11 But it happened that, when she descended the mountain at about the break of day, the scouts of the Assyrians met her, and they stopped her, saying, “Where are you coming from? And where are you going?”	11 E venendo alla discesa del monte circa il far del dì, vènnerogli incontro le guardie degli Assirii, e preserla, dicendo: donde vieni tu? e dove vai?
12 And she answered: “I am a daughter of the Hebrews. This is why I have fled from their face: because I realized that in the future they would be given over to you with pillaging, for they hold you in contempt, and they would never be willing to surrender themselves, so that they might find mercy in your sight.	12 La qual rispose: io son figliuola degli Ebrei; però io son fuggita dalla faccia loro, perchè conosco che debbono esser presi da voi; però che, disprezzandovi, non si hanno voluto rendere, e cercare misericordia nel vostro cospetto.
13 For this reason, I thought to myself, saying: I will go to the face of the leader Holofernes, so that I may reveal to him their secrets, and show him by what means he may be able to prevail over them, without one man of his army being slain.”	13 E per questa cagione io pensai fra me stessa, dicendo: io anderò alla presenza di Oloferne, e significherolli tutti i loro secreti, e dimostrerolli per che modo lui li potrà pigliare, sì che non muora uno uomo del suo esercito.
14 And when the men had heard her words, they beheld her face, and their eyes were astounded, because they wondered exceedingly at her beauty.	14 E quando quelli uomini ebbero udite le parole sue, consideravano la faccia sua, e rimaseno stupefatti gli occhi loro, però che molto si maravigliavano della sua bellezza.
15 And they said to her: “You have preserved your life by following such an excellent plan, to descend to our lord.	15 E dissero a lei: tu hai trovato uno consiglio, per lo quale tu hai salvata l'anima tua; di discendere al nostro signore.
16 But know this, that when you will stand in his sight, he will treat you well, and you will be very pleasing to his heart.” And they led her to the tabernacle of Holofernes, announcing her.	16 Questo vogliamo che tu sappi, che quando tu sarai nel cospetto suo, egli ti farà del bene, e sara?gli gratissima nel suo cuore. E detto questo, menoronla al padiglione di Oloferne, annunciandogli di questa donna.
17 And when she had entered before his face, immediately Holofernes was captivated by his eyes.	17 Ed essendo entrata nel cospetto suo, sùbito Oloferne rimase preso negli occhi suoi.
18 And his attendants said to him, “Who can hold the people of the Hebrews in contempt, who have such beautiful women? So, we ought to think it not worthwhile, for their sakes, to fight against them.”	18 E li suoi satelliti dissero a lui: chi è quello che disprezza il popolo degli Ebrei, i quali hanno così belle donne, che meritamente noi non dobbiamo combattere contro a loro?
19 And so, Judith looked upon Holofernes, sitting under a canopy, which was woven from purple and gold, with emeralds and precious stones.	19 E Iudit guardando vidde Oloferne che sedea dentro uno padiglione sottilissimo che copria il letto, il quale era di rosato, d' oro, smeraldo e pietre preziose.
20 And, after she had gazed into his face, she showed reverence for him, prostrating herself to the ground. And the servants of Holofernes lifted her up, at the command of their lord.	20 E guardando nella faccia di Oloferne, adorollo chinata sopra la terra. E levorla i servi di Oloferne, di comandamento del suo signore.
