1 Now Rehoboam set out for Shechem. For in that place all of Israel had convened, so that they might appoint him as king.	1 Andonne Roboam in Sichem; però che tutto Israel era raunato ivi per farlo re.
2 But when Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (indeed he had fled to that place from Solomon) had heard it, he promptly returned.	2 La quale cosa udita Ieroboam figliuolo di Nabat, il quale era in Egitto; però che prima era fuggito da Salomone; ritornò incontanente.
3 And they summoned him, and he arrived with all of Israel. And they spoke to Rehoboam, saying:	3 E chiamaronlo, e venne con tutto Israel; e favellarono a Roboam, e dissero:
4 “Your father pressed upon us a very difficult yoke. You should govern us more lightly than your father, who imposed on us a heavy servitude, and so lift up some of the burden, so that we may serve you.”	4 Il tuo padre ci opprimeo di gravissimo giogo; tu ci comanda di più leggiere cose, che il tuo padre, il quale puose a noi gravissima servitudine; onde sollevaci uno poco della gravezza, acciò che noi ti serviamo.
5 But he said, “Return to me after three days.” And when the people had gone away,	5 Il quale disse: dopo tre di ritornate a me. E andatone il popolo,
6 he took counsel with the elders, who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still living, saying, “What counsel would you give to me, so that I may respond to the people?”	6 tenne Roboam consiglio con gli antichi, i quali erano istati dinanzi al suo padre Salomone, tanto ch' egli era vivo, e disse: che consiglio mi date voi, ch' io risponda al popolo?
7 And they said to him, “If you please this people, and if you soothe them with words of clemency, they will be your servants for all days.”	7 I quali dissono a lui: se tu compiacerai a questo popolo, e umigliara'lo con dolci parole, servirannoti d'ogni tempo.
8 But he set aside the counsel of the elders, and he began to have discussion with the youth, who had been raised with him and who were among his companions.	8 Ed egli lasciò il consiglio degli antichi; e cominciò a trattare colli giovani, i quali erano [stati] governati con esso lui, [ed erano] in sua compagnia.
9 And he said to them: “How does it seem to you? Or how should I respond to this people, who have said to me, ‘Lift up the yoke that your father imposed upon us?’ ”	9 Il quale disse loro: che vi pare che debba rispondere a questo popolo, il quale mi dice ch' io gli faccia il giogo più leggiero, il quale il tuo padre ci pose?
10 But they responded like youths, having been raised with him in luxury, and they said: “So shall you speak to the people, who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; you should lighten it,’ and so shall you respond to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.	10 E loro rispuosono come giovani, e sì come nutricati con esso lui nelle delizie, e dissono: al popolo il quale dice a te: il tuo padre aggravò il giogo sopra noi,............. tu risponderai così: il minore delle dita mie è più grosso che i lombi del mio padre.
11 My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, and I will place more weight upon it. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.’ ”	11 Il mio padre v' impose grave giogo, e io vi apponerò maggiore giogo; il mio padre vi battè con li flagelli, e io vi batterò colli scorpioni.
12 Then Jeroboam, and the entire people, went to Rehoboam on the third day, just as he had instructed them.	12 Or venne Ieroboam, e tutto Israel, a Roboam il terzo dì, sì come egli avea comandato loro.
13 And the king responded harshly, abandoning the counsel of the elders.	13 E rispose loro duramente, lasciato il consiglio degli antichi.
14 And he spoke according to the will of the youths: “My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, which I will make heavier. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.”	14 E disse secondo la volontà de' giovani: il mio padre vi puose grave giogo, il quale io faroe più grave; il mio padre vi batteo coi flagelli, ed io vi batterò coi scorpioni.
15 And he did not acquiesce to the pleadings of the people. For it was the will of God that his word be fulfilled, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.	15 E non consentì ai preghi del popolo; però ch' era volontà di Dio, che la sua parola fosse compiuta, la quale avea detta per mano di Aia di Silo a Ieroboam figliuolo di Nabat.
16 Then the entire people, speaking more harshly to the king, spoke to him in this way: “There is no portion for us in David, and there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your dwellings, O Israel. Then you, O David, shall pasture your own house.” And Israel went away to their dwellings.	16 E dicendo il re cose più dure, tutto il popolo disse così a lui: noi non abbiamo parte in David, nè eredità nel figliuolo di Isai. Tu, Israel, ritorna alle tue case; e tu, David, pasci la casa tua. E Israel ritornò ai suoi tabernacoli.
17 But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah.	17 E sopra i figliuoli d' Israel, i quali eranc nella città di Giuda, regnò Roboam.
18 And king Rehoboam sent Aduram, who was in charge of the tributes. And the sons of Israel stoned him, and he died. And so king Rehoboam hurried to climb into the chariot, and he fled to Jerusalem.	18 E mandò il re Roboam Aduram, il quale era sopra gli tributi; e i figliuoli d' Israel il lapidarono, e fu morto; e il re Roboam ascese in sul carro tostamente, e fuggio in Ierusalem.
19 And Israel withdrew from the house of David, even to this day.	19 E partissi Israel dalla casa di David insino al presente dì.
