CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
Now when David was living in his house, he said to the prophet Nathan: “Behold, I live in a house of cedar. But the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under tent skins.”1 Cuando David se estableció en su casa, dijo al profeta Natán: «Mira, yo habito en una casa de cedro, mientras el Arca de la Alianza del Señor está bajo una tienda de campaña».
And Nathan said to David: “Do all that is in your heart. For God is with you.”2 Natán respondió a David: «Puedes hacer todo lo que tienes pensado, porque el Señor está contigo».
And yet, that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:3 Pero aquella misma noche, la palabra del Señor llegó a Natán en estos términos:
“Go, and speak to my servant David: Thus says the Lord: You shall not build a house for me as a dwelling place.4 «Ve a decirle a mi servidor David: Así habla el Señor: No eres tú el que me edificará la casa para que yo la habite.
For I have not stayed in a house from the time when I led out Israel, even to this day. Instead, I have been continually changing places, in a tabernacle and tent,5 Porque desde el día en que hice subir a Israel hasta el día de hoy, nunca habité en una casa, sino que anduve de carpa en carpa y de morada en morada.
dwelling with all of Israel. When did I ever speak to any one at all, among the judges of Israel whom I placed in charge so that they might pasture my people, saying: ‘Why have you not built a house of cedar for me?’6 Y mientras iba caminando entre todo Israel, ¿acaso dije a uno solo de sus Jueces, a los que mandé apacentar a mi pueblo: «Por qué no me han edificado una casa de cedro»?
And so, now you shall say this to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you when you were following the flock in the pastures, so that you would be the leader of my people Israel.7 Y ahora, esto es lo que le dirás a mi servidor David: Así habla el Señor de los ejércitos: Yo te saqué del campo de pastoreo, de detrás del rebaño, para que fueras el jefe de mi pueblo Israel.
And I have been with you wherever you have gone. And I have slain all your enemies before you, and I have made a name for you like one of the great ones who are celebrated upon the earth.8 Estuve contigo dondequiera que fuiste y exterminé a todos tus enemigos delante de ti. Yo haré que tu nombre sea tan grande como el de los grandes de la tierra.
And I have given a place to my people Israel. They shall be planted, and they shall live in it, and they shall no longer be moved. Neither shall the sons of iniquity wear them away, as in the beginning,9 Fijaré un lugar para mi pueblo Israel y lo plantaré para que tenga allí su morada. Ya no será perturbado, y los malhechores no seguirán devorándolo como antes.
from the days when I gave judges to my people Israel, and I humbled all your enemies. Therefore, I announce to you that the Lord will build a house for you.10 Desde el día en que constituí Jueces sobre mi pueblo Israel, yo he sometido a todos tus enemigos. Y ahora te anuncio que el Señor te edificará una casa.
And when you will have completed your days, so that you go to your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall be from your sons. And I will establish his kingdom.11 Sí, cuando llegues al término de tus días y te vayas con tus padres, yo elevaré después de ti a uno de tus descendientes, a uno de entre tus hijos, y afianzaré su realeza.
He shall build a house for me, and I will make firm his throne, even unto eternity.12 El me edificará una Casa y yo afianzaré su trono para siempre.
I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. And I will not take away my mercy from him, as I took it away from the one who was before you.13 Yo seré un padre para él, y él será para mí un hijo. Y jamás retiraré de él mi fidelidad, como se la retiré a aquel que te precedió.
And I will station him in my house and in my kingdom, even forever. And his throne will be very firm, in perpetuity.”14 Lo estableceré en mi Casa y en mi reino para siempre, y su trono será estable eternamente».
According to all these words, and according to this entire vision, so did Nathan speak to David.15 Natán comunicó a David todas estas palabras y toda esta visión.
And when king David had departed, and had sat down before the Lord, he said: “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you would grant such things to me?16 Entonces el rey David fue a sentarse delante del Señor y exclamó: «¿Quién soy yo, Señor Dios, y qué es mi casa para que me hayas hecho llegar hasta aquí?
But even this has seemed little in your sight, and therefore you have also spoken about the house of your servant even for the future.
What more can David add, since you have so glorified your servant, and have known him?18 ¿Qué más podría decirte David sobre el honor que le has dispensado, si tú ya conoces a tu servidor?
O Lord, because of your servant, in accord with your own heart, you have brought about all this magnificence, and you have willed all these great things to be known.19 Por amor a tu servidor y conforme a tu designio, Señor, tú has realizado toda esta gran obra, dando así a conocer tu inmensa grandeza.
O Lord, there is no one like you. And there is no other God apart from you, out of all whom we have heard about with our ears.20 Sí, Señor, no hay nadie como tú, ni hay Dios fuera de ti, por todo lo que hemos escuchado con nuestros propios oídos.
For what other single nation upon earth is like your people Israel, to whom God reached out, so that he might free them, and might make a people for himself, and by his greatness and terribleness cast out the nations before the face of those whom he had freed from Egypt?21 ¿Y hay sobre la tierra una sola nación como tu pueblo Israel, ese pueblo a quien el mismo Dios fue a rescatar para sí, a fin de hacerse un nombre grande y temible, expulsando a naciones enteras ante el pueblo que rescataste de Egipto?
And you have set your people Israel to be your people, even unto eternity. And you, O Lord, have become their God.22 Tú has hecho que tu pueblo Israel fuera tu Pueblo para siempre, y tú, Señor, eres su Dios.
Now therefore, O Lord, let the word that you have spoken to your servant, and over his house, be confirmed in perpetuity, and do just as you have spoken.23 Y ahora, Señor, que se mantenga firme eternamente la palabra que has pronunciado acerca de tu servidor y de su casa, y obra conforme a lo que has dicho.
And may your name remain and be magnified even for all time. And let it be said: ‘The Lord of hosts is the God of Israel. And the house of his servant David remains forever before him.’24 Que se mantenga firme, y que tu Nombre sea engrandecido para siempre. Que se diga: "¡El Señor de los ejércitos es el Dios de Israel, es Dios para Israel!". Y que la casa de David, tu servidor, esté bien afianzada delante de ti.
For you, O Lord my God, have revealed to the ear of your servant that you will build a house for him. And therefore your servant has found faith so that he might pray before you.25 Porque tú mismo, Dios mío, le has revelado a tu servidor que le edificarás una casa; por eso tu servidor se ha atrevido a dirigirte esta plegaria.
Now then, O Lord, you are God. And you have spoken to your servant such great benefits.26 Y ahora tú, Señor, que eres Dios, le has prometido estos bienes a tu servidor.
And you have begun to bless the house of your servant, so that it may be always before you. For since it is you who is blessing, O Lord, it shall be blessed forever.”27 Por eso, dígnate bendecir la casa de tu servidor, para que ella permanezca siempre en tu presencia; porque lo que tú has bendecido, Señor, queda bendito para siempre».
