CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINDIODATI
Also, he made houses for himself in the City of David. And built a place for the ark of God, and he set up a tent for it.1 OR Davide si fece delle case nella Città di Davide; ed apparecchiò un luogo per l’Arca di Dio, e le tese un padiglione.
Then David said: “It is illicit for anyone to carry the ark of God except the Levites, whom the Lord chose to carry it and to minister to himself, even unto eternity.”2 Allora Davide disse: Ei non istà ad altri che a’ Leviti di portar l’Arca di Dio; perciocchè il Signore li ha eletti per portar l’Arca di Dio, e per ministrargli in perpetuo.
And he gathered all of Israel in Jerusalem, so that the ark of God might be brought into its place, which he had prepared for it.3 E Davide adunò tutto Israele in Gerusalemme, per trasportar l’Arca del Signore al suo luogo, ch’egli le avea apparecchiato.
Certainly, there were both the sons of Aaron and the Levites:4 Davide adunò eziandio i figliuoli d’Aaronne, e i Leviti.
From the sons of Kohath, Uriel was the leader, and his brothers were one hundred twenty.5 De’ figliuoli di Chehat, Uriel era il principale, ed avea seco centoventi dei suoi fratelli.
From the sons of Merari: Asaiah was the leader, and his brothers were two hundred twenty.6 De’ figliuoli di Merari, Asaia era il principale, ed avea seco dugentoventi de’ suoi fratelli.
From the sons of Gershom: Joel was the leader, and his brothers were one hundred thirty.7 De’ figliuoli di Gherson, Ioel era il principale, ed avea seco centotrenta de’ suoi fratelli.
From the sons of Elizaphan: Shemaiah was the leader, and his brothers were two hundred.8 De’ figliuoli di Elisafan, Semaia era il principale, ed avea seco dugento de’ suoi fratelli.
From the sons of Hebron: Eliel was the leader, and his brothers were eighty.9 De’ figliuoli di Hebron, Eliel era il principale, ed avea seco ottanta de’ suoi fratelli.
From the sons of Uzziel: Amminadab was the leader, and his brothers were one hundred twelve.10 De’ figliuoli di Uzziel, Amminadab era il principale, ed avea seco cento dodici de’ suoi fratelli.
And David summoned the priests, Zadok and Abiathar, and the Levites: Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab.11 E Davide chiamò Sadoc ed Ebiatar, sacerdoti, e i Leviti Uriel, Asaia, e Ioel, Semaia, Eliel, ed Amminadab.
And he said to them: “You who are the leaders of the Levitical families, be sanctified with your brothers, and bring the ark of the Lord God of Israel to the place that has been prepared for it.12 E disse loro: Voi siete i capi delle famiglie paterne de’ Leviti; santificate voi, ed i vostri fratelli; acciocchè trasportiate l’Arca del Signore Iddio d’Israele al luogo che io le ho apparecchiato.
Otherwise, as it was before, when the Lord struck us because you were not present, so also it might be now, if we do what is illicit.”13 Perciocchè voi non ci foste la prima volta, il Signore Iddio nostro fece una rottura fra noi; perciocchè noi non l’avevamo ricercato secondo che si conveniva.
Therefore, the priests and the Levites were sanctified, so that they might carry the ark of the Lord God of Israel.14 I sacerdoti adunque, e i Leviti, si santificarono, per trasportar l’Arca del Signore Iddio d’Israele.
And the sons of Levi took the ark of God, just as Moses had instructed, in accord with the word of the Lord, upon their shoulders by the bars.15 E i figliuoli dei Leviti portarono l’Arca di Dio in su le loro spalle, con le stanghe che aveano addosso, come Mosè avea comandato, secondo la parola del Signore.
And David spoke to the leaders of the Levites, so that they might appoint, from their brothers, singers with musical instruments, specifically, psalteries, and harps, and cymbals, so that a joyful noise might resound on high.16 E Davide disse a’ principali d’infra i Leviti che facessero esser quivi presenti i lor fratelli cantori, con istrumenti musicali, salteri, e cetere, e cembali, sonando, ed alzando la voce, con allegrezza.
And they appointed from the Levites: Heman, the son of Joel; and from his brothers, Asaph, the son of Berechiah; and truly, from their brothers, the sons of Merari: Ethan, the son of Kushaiah.17 E i Leviti fecero esser quivi presenti Heman, figliuolo di Ioel; e d’infra i fratelli di esso, Asaf, figliuolo di Berechia; e d’infra i figliuoli di Merari, lor fratelli, Etan, figliuolo di Cusaia;
And with them were their brothers in the second rank: Zechariah, and Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jahiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and Obededom, and Jeiel, who were gatekeepers.18 e, con loro, i lor fratelli del secondo ordine: Zaccaria, e Ben, e Iaaziel, e Semiramot, e Iehiel, ed Unni, ed Eliab, e Benaia, e Maaseia, e Mattitia, ed Elifelehu, e Micneia, ed Obed-Edom, e Ieiel, portinai.
Now the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were sounding out with cymbals of brass.19 Or questi cantori: Heman, Asaf, ed Etan, sonavano con cembali di rame;
And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah were singing mysteries with the psalteries.20 e Zaccaria, e Iaaziel, e Semiramot, e Iehiel, ed Unni, ed Eliab, Maaseia, e Benaia, sonavano con salteri sopra Alamot.
Then Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah and Obededom, and Jeiel and Azaziah were singing a song of victory with the harps, for the octave.21 E Mattitia, ed Elifelehu, e Micneia, ed Obed-Edom, e Ieiel, ed Azaria, sonavano con le cetere sopra Seminit, per li canti di vittoria.
Now Chenaniah, the leader of the Levites, was foremost over the prophecies, in order to mark out in advance the melodies. For indeed, he was very skillful.22 E Chenania, principale fra i Leviti, intonava; egli presideva all’intonare, perciocchè egli era uomo intendente.
And Berechiah and Elkanah were porters of the ark.23 E Berechia, ed Elcana, erano portinai dell’Arca.
And the priests, Shebaniah, and Joshaphat, and Nethanel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, were sounding the trumpets before the ark of God. And Obededom and Jehiah were porters of the ark.24 E Sebania, e Giosafat, e Natanael, ed Amasai, e Zaccaria, e Benaia, ed Eliezer, sacerdoti, sonavano con le trombe davanti all’Arca di Dio; ed Obed-Edom, e Iehia, erano portinai dell’Arca
Therefore, David, and all those greater by birth of Israel, and the tribunes, went to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obededom with rejoicing.25 Così Davide, e gli Anziani d’Israele, ed i capi delle migliaia, camminavano trasportando l’Arca del Patto del Signore dalla casa di Obed-Edom, con allegrezza.
And when God had assisted the Levites, who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they immolated seven bulls and seven rams.26 E quando Iddio dava alleggiamento a’ Leviti che portavano l’Arca del Patto del Signore, si sacrificavano sette giovenchi, e sette montoni.
Now David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah, the leader of the prophecy among the singers. But David was also clothed with a linen ephod.27 E Davide era ammantato d’un ammanto di bisso; e parimente tutti i Leviti che portavano l’Arca, ed i cantori, e Chenania, capo de’ cantori nell’intonare; e Davide avea indosso un Efod di lino.
And all of Israel were leading back the ark of the covenant of the Lord with jubilation, sounding out with the noise of horns, and trumpets, and cymbals, and psalteries, and harps.28 Così tutto Israele conduceva l’Arca del Patto del Signore, con grida d’allegrezza, con suon di corni, e con trombe, e con cembali, sonando con salteri, e con cetere.
And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord had arrived in the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, gazing through a window, saw king David dancing and playing, and she despised him in her heart.29 Ora, quando l’Arca del Patto del Signore giunse alla Città di Davide, Mical, figliuola di Saulle, riguardò dalla finestra, e vide il re Davide, che saltava, e festeggiava. Ed ella lo sprezzò nel suo cuore
