Now after these things, it happened that David struck the Philistines, and he humbled them. And David took the bridle of tribute from the hand of the Philistines.1 Dopo questo, David percosse i Filistei e li umiliò. David tolse dalla mano dei Filistei il freno del tributo.
And he struck Moab, and he measured them with a line, leveling them to the ground. Now he measured with two lines, one to kill, and one to keep alive. And Moab was made to serve David under tribute.2 Percosse pure i Moabiti, e, fattili stendere per terra, li misurò con una corda: ne misurò due parti, una per farla morire, l'altra per conservarla in vita. Così Moab fu assoggettato a David e fatto tributario.
And David struck Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, the king of Zobah, when he set out to rule over the river Euphrates.3 David battè anche Adarezer figlio di Rohob, re di Soba, quando questi partì per dominare sul fiume Eufrate.
And from his troops, David seized one thousand seven hundred horsemen and twenty thousand foot soldiers. And he cut the sinew of the leg in all the chariot horses. But he left aside enough of them for one hundred chariots.4 David, dopo avergli preso mille settecento cavalieri e venti mila pedoni, tagliò i garetti a tutti i cavalli dei carri; ma ne riservò per cento carri.
And the Syrians of Damascus arrived, so that they might bring reinforcements to Hadadezer, the king of Zobah. And David struck down twenty-two thousand men of the Syrians.5 Essendo i Siri di Damasco andati a portare aiuto a Adarezer re di Soba, David battè ventidue mila Siri,
And David positioned a garrison in Syria of Damascus. And Syria served David under tribute. And the Lord assisted David in all things whatsoever that he set out to accomplish.6 pose un presidio nella Siria di Damasco, e la Siria fu assoggettata e costretta a pagare il tributo a David. Il Signore conservò David in tutte le sue imprese.
And David took the armbands of gold, which the servants of Hadadezer had, and he brought them to Jerusalem.7 David, prese le armi d'oro che avevano i servi di Adarezer, le portò a Gerusalemme;
And from Betah and Beeroth, cities of Hadadezer, king David took an exceedingly great amount of brass.8 e portò via una grandissima quantità di rame da Bete e da Berot, città di Adarezer.
Then Toi, the king of Hamath, heard that David had struck down the entire strength of Hadadezer.9 Quando Tou re di Emat seppe che David aveva battute tutte le forze di Adarezer,
And so, Toi sent his son Joram to king David, so that he might greet him with congratulations, and give thanks, because he had fought against Hadadezer and had struck him down. For indeed, Toi was the enemy of Hadadezer. And in his hand were vessels of gold, and vessels of silver, and vessels of brass.10 mandò Ioram suo figlio al re David, per salutarlo, congratularsi con lui, ringraziarlo per aver attaccato e sconfitto Adarezer, essendo Tou nemico d'Adarezer. Ioram portò vasi d'oro, d'argento e di bronzo,
And king David also sanctified these things to the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had sanctified from all the peoples whom he had subdued:11 che il re David consacrò al Signore, come aveva pur consacrato l'oro, l'argento di tutte le genti che aveva soggiogate,
from Syria, and Moab, and the sons Ammon, and the Philistines, and Amalek, and from the best spoils of Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, the king of Zobah.12 della Siria, di Moab, dei figli d'Ammon, dei Filistei, di Amalec, e delle spoglie di Adarezer figlio di Rohob, re di Soba.
David also made a name for himself when he returned from seizing Syria, in the Valley of the Salt Pits, having cut down eighteen thousand.13 David si fece pure un nome quando, tornando dalla conquista della Siria, mise a pezzi diciotto mila uomini nella Valle delle Saline.
And he positioned guards in Edom, and he stationed a garrison. And all of Edom was made to serve David. And the Lord assisted David in all things whatsoever that he set out to accomplish.14 Egli pose governatori nellTdumea e vi stabilì un presidio, e tutta l'Idumea gli fu soggetta. Il Signore salvò David in tutte le sue imprese.
And David reigned over all of Israel. And David accomplished judgment and justice with all his people.15 Così David regnò sopra tutto Israele, rendendo pure ragione e giustizia a tutto il suo popolo.
Now Joab, the son Zeruiah, was over the army. And Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, was the keeper of records.16 Gioab, figlio di Sarvia, comandava l'esercito; Giosafat, figlio di Ahilud, era storiografo;
And Zadok, the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech, the son of Abiathar, were the priests. And Seraiah was the scribe.17 Sadoc, figlio di Achitob e Achimelec figio di Abiatar, eran sommi sacerdoti; Saraia era segretario;
And Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was over the Cherethites and Pelethites. But the sons of David were priests.18 Banaia, figlio di Ioiada, comandava i Ceretei e i Feletei, e i figli di David eran principi.
