CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINDIODATI
Now after these things, it happened that the king of the sons of Ammon died, and his son Hanun reigned after him.1 ORA, dopo queste cose, avvenne che il re de’ figliuoli di Ammon morì; ed Hanun, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo.
And David said, “I will show mercy to Hanun, the son of Nahash, just as his father showed mercy to me.” Therefore, David sent consolation to him, by his servants, over the passing of his father. But when the servants of David had arrived in the land of the sons of Ammon,2 E Davide disse: Io userò benignità inverso Hanun, figliuolo di Nahas come suo padre usò benignità inverso me. E Davide mandò a consolarlo di suo padre, per li suoi servitori. Ma, quando i servitori di Davide furono giunti nel paese de’ figliuoli di Ammon,
the leaders of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun, their lord: “Do you think it was because of the honor of your father that David sent consolers to you? And did not David send his servants to you, so that he might investigate and explore the city, and so that he might overthrow it?”3 i principali de’ figliuoli di Ammon dissero ad Hanun, lor signore: Parti che ciò, che Davide ti ha mandati de’ consolatori, sia per onorar tuo padre? non ti ha egli mandati i suoi servitori, per investigar la città, e per ispiarla, e per sovvertirla?
And so, Hanun took the servants of David, and he shaved off one half part of their beards, and he cut their garments at the middle, as far as the buttocks, and he sent them away.4 Hanun adunque prese i servitori di Davide, e fece lor radere mezza la barba, e tagliare i vestimenti per lo mezzo fino alle natiche; poi li rimandò.
And when this had been reported to David, he sent to meet them. And the men were greatly disturbed by shame. And David commanded them, “Remain in Jericho, until your beards grow, and then return.”5 Ed essi fecero assaper la cosa al re Davide; ed egli mandò loro incontro; perciocchè quegli uomini erano grandemente confusi. E il re fece lor dire: Dimorate in Gerico, finchè la barba vi sia ricresciuta; poi ve ne ritornerete
Now the sons of Ammon, seeing that they had done an injury to David, sent for, and paid wages to, the Syrians of Rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand foot soldiers, and from the king of Maacah, one thousand men, and from Tob, twelve thousand men.6 Or i figliuoli di Ammon, veggendo che si erano renduti abbominevoli a Davide, mandarono ad assoldare ventimila uomini a piè, de’ Siri di Bet-rehob, e dei Siri di Soba; e mille uomini del re di Maaca, e dodicimila di que’ di Tob.
And when David had heard this, he sent Joab and the entire army of warriors.7 E Davide, avendo ciò inteso, mandò contro a loro Ioab, con tutto l’esercito della gente di valore.
Then the sons of Ammon went forth, and they positioned their battle line before the very entrance of the gates. But the Syrians of Zobah, and of Rehob, and of Tob, and of Maacah, were by themselves in the field.8 E gli Ammoniti uscirono in campagna, e ordinarono la battaglia in su l’entrata della porta della città, ed i Siri di Soba e di Rehob, e la gente di Tob e di Maaca, stavano da parte nella campagna.
And so, seeing that the battle had been prepared against him, both facing him and behind, Joab chose some from all of the elect men of Israel, and he set up a battle line opposite the Syrians.9 E Ioab, veggendo che la battaglia era volta contro a lui, davanti e dietro, fece una cernita d’infra tutti gli uomini scelti d’Israele, ed ordinò quelli contro a’ Siri.
But the remaining part of the people he delivered to his brother Abishai, who formed a battle line against the sons of Ammon.10 E diede a condurre il rimanente della gente ad Abisai, suo fratello, e l’ordinò contro a’ figliuoli di Ammon; e disse ad Abisai:
And Joab said: “If the Syrians prevail against me, then you shall assist me. But if the sons of Ammon prevail against you, then I will assist you.11 Se i Siri mi superano, soccorrimi; se i figliuoli di Ammon altresì ti superano, io ti soccorrerò.
Be valiant men. And let us fight on behalf of our people and the city of our God. Then the Lord will do what is good in his own sight.”12 Fortificati, e portiamoci valorosamente per lo popolo nostro, e per le città del nostro Dio. E faccia il Signore ciò che gli parrà bene.
And so, Joab, and the people who were with him, undertook the conflict against the Syrians, who immediately fled before their face.13 Allora Ioab, con la gente ch’egli avea seco, venne a battaglia contro a Siri; ed essi fuggirono d’innanzi a lui.
Then, seeing that the Syrians had fled, the sons of Ammon themselves also fled from the face of Abishai, and they entered into the city. And Joab returned from the sons of Ammon, and he went to Jerusalem.14 E gli Ammoniti, veggendo che i Siri erano fuggiti, fuggirono anch’essi d’innanzi ad Abisai, ed entrarono dentro alla città. E Ioab se ne ritornò indietro da’ figliuoli di Ammon, e venne in Gerusalemme
And so, the Syrians, seeing that they had fallen before Israel, gathered themselves together.15 E i Siri, veggendo ch’erano stati sconfitti da Israele, si adunarono insieme.
And Hadadezer sent and brought the Syrians who were beyond the river, and he led in their army. And Shobach, the rule of the military of Hadadezer, was their leader.16 E Hadarezer mandò a far venire i Siri di là dal fiume; ed essi vennero in Helam; e Sobac, capo dell’esercito di Hadarezer, li conduceva.
And when this had been reported to David, he drew together all of Israel. And he crossed over the Jordan, and he went to Helam. And the Syrians formed a battle line opposite David, and they fought against him.17 Ed essendo ciò rapportato a Davide, egli adunò tutto Israele, e passò il Giordano, e venne in Helam. E i Siri ordinarono la battaglia contro a Davide, e combatterono con lui.
And the Syrians fled before the face of Israel. And David killed, among the Syrians, the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen. And he struck down Shobach, the leader of the military, who immediately died.18 Ma i Siri fuggirono d’innanzi a Israele; e Davide uccise de’ Siri la gente di settecento carri, e quarantamila uomini a cavallo; percosse eziandio Sobac, capo del loro esercito; ed egli morì quivi.
Then all the kings who were in the reinforcements of Hadadezer, seeing themselves to be defeated by Israel, were very afraid and they fled: fifty-eight thousand men before Israel. And they made peace with Israel, and they served them. And the Syrians were afraid to offer assistance to the sons of Ammon anymore.19 E tutti i re, vassalli di Hadarezer, veggendo ch’erano stati sconfitti da Israele, fecero pace con Israele, e furono loro soggetti. Ed i Siri temettero di più soccorrere i figliuoli di Ammon
