1 Abimelech, son of Jerubbaal, went to his mother's kinsmen in Shechem, and said to them and to the whole clan to which his mother's family belonged,	1 Abimélek, hijo de Yerubbaal, marchó a Siquem, donde los hermanos de su madre, y les dijo a ellos y a todo el clan de la familia de su madre:
2 "Put this question to all the citizens of Shechem: 'Which is better for you: that seventy men, or all Jerubbaal's sons, rule over you, or that one man rule over you?' You must remember that I am your own flesh and bone."	2 «Decid esto, por favor, a oídos de todos los señores de Siquem: ¿Qué es mejor para vosotros, que os estén mandando setenta hombres, todos los hijos de Yerubbaal, o que os mande uno solo? Recordad además que yo soy de vuestros huesos y de vuestra carne».
3 When his mother's kin repeated these words to them on his behalf, all the citizens of Shechem sympathized with Abimelech, thinking, "He is our kinsman."	3 Los hermanos de su madre hablaron de él en los mismos términos a todos los señores de Siquem, y su corazón se inclinó hacia Abimélek, porque se decían: «Es nuestro hermano».
4 They also gave him seventy silver shekels from the temple of Baal of Berith, with which Abimelech hired shiftless men and ruffians as his followers.	4 Le dieron setenta siclos de plata del templo de Baal Berit, con los que Abimélek contrató a hombres miserables, y vagabundos, que se fueron con él.
5 He then went to his ancestral house in Ophrah, and slew his brothers, the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, on one stone. Only the youngest son of Jerubbaal, Jotham, escaped, for he was hidden.	5 Fue entonces a casa de su padre, en Ofrá, y mató a sus hermanos, los hijos de Yerubbaal, setenta hombres, sobre una misma piedra. Sólo escapó Jotam, el hijo menor de Yerubbaal, porque se escondió.
6 Then all the citizens of Shechem and all Beth-millo came together and proceeded to make Abimelech king by the terebinth at the memorial pillar in Shechem.	6 Luego se reunieron todos los señores de Siquem y todo Bet Milló, y fueron y proclamaron rey a Abimélek junto al Terebinto de la estela que hay en Siquem.
7 When this was reported to him, Jotham went to the top of Mount Gerizim, and standing there, cried out to them in a loud voice: "Hear me, citizens of Shechem, that God may then hear you!	7 Se lo anunciaron a Jotam, quien se colocó en la cumbre del monte Garizim, alzó la voz y clamó: «Escuchadme, señores de Siquem, y que Dios os escuche.
8 Once the trees went to anoint a king over themselves. So they said to the olive tree, 'Reign over us.'	8 Los árboles se pusieron en camino para ungir a uno como su rey. Dijeron al olivo: “Sé tú nuestro rey.”
9 But the olive tree answered them, 'Must I give up my rich oil, whereby men and gods are honored, and go to wave over the trees?'	9 Les respondió el olivo: “¿Voy a renunciar a mi aceite con el que gracias a mí son honrados los dioses y los hombres, para ir a vagar por encima de los árboles?”
10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'Come; you reign over us!'	10 Los árboles dijeron a la higuera: “Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros.”
11 But the fig tree answered them, 'Must I give up my sweetness and my good fruit, and go to wave over the trees?'	11 Les respondió la higuera: “¿Voy a renunciar a mi dulzura y a mi sabroso fruto, para ir a vagar por encima de los árboles?
12 Then the trees said to the vine, 'Come you, and reign over us.'	12 Los árboles dijeron a la vid: “Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros.”
13 But the vine answered them, 'Must I give up my wine that cheers gods and men, and go to wave over the trees?'	13 Les respondió la vid: “¿Voy a renunciar a mi mosto, el que alegra a los dioses y a los hombres, para ir a vagar por encima de los árboles?”
14 Then all the trees said to the buckthorn, 'Come; you reign over us!'	14 Todos los árboles dijeron a la zarza: “Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros.”
15 But the buckthorn replied to the trees, 'If you wish to anoint me king over you in good faith, come and take refuge in my shadow. Otherwise, let fire come from the buckthorn and devour the cedars of Lebanon.'	15 La zarza respondió a los árboles: “Si con sinceridad venís a ungirme a mí para reinar sobre vosotros, llegad y cobijaos a mi sombra. Y si no es así, brote fuego de la zarza y devore los cedros del Líbano.”»
16 "Now then, if you have acted in good faith and honorably in appointing Abimelech your king, if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and with his family, and if you have treated him as he deserved--	16 «Ahora pues, ¿habéis obrado con sinceridad y lealtad al elegir rey a Abimélek? ¿Os habéis portado bien con Yerubbaal y su casa y le habéis tratado según el mérito de sus manos?
17 for my father fought for you at the risk of his life when he saved you from the power of Midian;	17 Mi padre combatió por vosotros, arriesgó su vida, os libró de la mano de Madián;
18 but you have risen against his family this day and have killed his seventy sons upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his handmaid, king over the citizens of Shechem, because he is your kinsman--	18 y vosotros os habéis alzado hoy contra la casa de mi padre, habéis matado a sus hijos, setenta hombres sobre una misma piedra, y habéis puesto por rey a Abimélek, el hijo de su esclava, sobre los señores de Siquem, por ser él vuestro hermano.
19 if, then, you have acted in good faith and with honor toward Jerubbaal and his family this day, rejoice in Abimelech and may he in turn rejoice in you.	19 Si, pues, habéis obrado con sinceridad y lealtad con Yerubbaal y con su casa en el día de hoy, que Abimélek sea vuestra alegría y vosotros la suya.
20 But if not, let fire come forth from Abimelech to devour the citizens of Shechem and Beth-millo, and let fire come forth from the citizens and from Beth-millo to devour Abimelech."	20 De lo contrario, que salga fuego de Abimélek y devore a los señores de Siquem y de Bet Milló; y que salga fuego de los señores de Siquem y Bet Milló y devore a Abimélek».
21 Then Jotham went in flight to Beer, where he remained for fear of his brother Abimelech.	21 Y Jotam huyó, se puso a salvo y fue a Beer, donde se estableció, lejos del alcance de su hermano Abimélek.
22 When Abimelech had ruled Israel for three years,	22 Abimélek gobernó tres años en Israel.
23 God put bad feelings between Abimelech and the citizens of Shechem, who rebelled against Abimelech.	23 Pero Dios envió un espíritu de discordia entre Abimélek y los señores de Siquem; y los señores de Siquem traicionaron a Abimélek,
24 This was to repay the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal and to avenge their blood upon their brother Abimelech, who killed them, and upon the citizens of Shechem, who encouraged him to kill his brothers.	24 para que el crimen cometido contra los setenta hijos de Yerubbaal fuera vengado y su sangre cayera sobre su hermano Abimélek, que los había asesinado, y sobre los señores de Siquem, que le habían ayudado a asesinar a sus hermanos.
25 The citizens of Shechem then set men in ambush for him on the mountaintops, and these robbed all who passed them on the road. But it was reported to Abimelech.	25 Los señores de Siquem prepararon contra él emboscadas en las cimas de los montes y saqueaban a todo el que pasaba cerca por el camino. Y se dio aviso a Abimélek.
26 Now Gaal, son of Ebed, came over to Shechem with his kinsmen. The citizens of Shechem put their trust in him,	26 Gaal, hijo de Obed, acompañando a sus hermanos, vino a pasar por Siquem y se ganó la confianza de los señores de Siquem.
27 and went out into the fields, harvested their grapes and trod them out. Then they held a festival and went to the temple of their god, where they ate and drank and cursed Abimelech.	27 Salieron éstos al campo a vendimiar sus viñas, pisaron las uvas, hicieron fiesta y entraron en el templo de su dios. Comieron y bebieron y maldijeron a Abimélek.
28 Gaal, son of Ebed, said, "Who is Abimelech? And why should we of Shechem serve him? Were not the son of Jerubbaal and his lieutenant Zebul once subject to the men of Hamor, father of Shechem? Why should we serve him?	28 Entonces Gaal, hijo de Obed, exclamó: «¿Quién es Abimélek y qué es Siquem para que le sirvamos? ¿por qué el hijo de Yerubbaal y Zebul, su lugarteniente, no han de servir a la gente de Jamor, padre de Siquem? ¿Por qué hemos de servirles nosotros?
29 Would that this people were entrusted to my command! I would depose Abimelech. I would say to Abimelech, 'Get a larger army and come out!'"	29 ¡Quién pusiera este pueblo en mis manos! Yo echaría a Abimélek y le diría: Refuerza tu ejército y sal a la lucha».
30 At the news of what Gaal, son of Ebed, had said, Zebul, the ruler of the city, was angry	30 Zebul, gobernador de la ciudad, se enteró de la propuesta de Gaal, hijo de Obed, y montó en cólera.
31 and sent messengers to Abimelech in Arumah with the information: "Gaal, son of Ebed, and his kinsmen have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you.	31 Envió secretamente mensajeros donde Abimélek, para decirle: «Mira que Gaal, hijo de Obed, con sus hermanos, ha llegado a Siquem y están soliviantando a la ciudad contra ti.
32 Now rouse yourself; set an ambush tonight in the fields, you and the men who are with you.	32 Por tanto, levántate de noche, tú y la gente que tienes contigo, y tiende una emboscada en el campo;
33 Promptly at sunrise tomorrow morning, make a raid on the city. When he and his followers come out against you, deal with him as best you can."	33 por la mañana temprano, en cuanto salga el sol, te levantas y te lanzas contra la ciudad. Cuando Gaal salga a tu encuentro con su gente, harás con él lo que te venga a mano».
34 During the night Abimelech advanced with all his soldiers and set up an ambush for Shechem in four companies.	34 Abimélek se levantó de noche con todas las tropas de que disponía y tendieron una emboscada frente a Siquem, repartidos en cuatro grupos.
35 Gaal, son of Ebed, went out and stood at the entrance of the city gate. When Abimelech and his soldiers rose from their place of ambush,	35 Cuando Gaal, hijo de Obed, salió y se detuvo a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, Abimélek y la tropa que le acompañaba salieron de su emboscada.
36 Gaal saw them and said to Zebul, "There are men coming down from the hilltops!" But Zebul answered him, "You see the shadow of the hills as men."	36 Gaal vio la tropa y dijo a Zebul: «Mira la gente que baja de las cumbres de los montes». Zebul respondió: «Es la sombra de los montes lo que ves y te parecen hombres».
37 But Gaal went on to say, "Men are coming down from the region of Tabbur-Haares, and one company is coming by way of Elon-Meonenim."	37 Gaal volvió a decir: «Mirad la gente que baja del lado del Ombligo de la Tierra, y otra partida llega por el camino de la Encina de los Adivinos».
38 Zebul said to him, "Where now is the boast you uttered, 'Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?' Are these not the men for whom you expressed contempt? Go out now and fight with them."	38 Zebul le dijo entonces: «¿Qué has hecho de tu boca tú que decías: “¿Quién es Abimélek para que le sirvamos?” ¿ No es esa la gente que despreciaste? Sal, pues, ahora y pelea contra ellos».
39 So Gaal went out at the head of the citizens of Shechem and fought against Abimelech.	39 Gaal salió al frente de los señores de Siquem y presentó batalla a Abimélek.
40 But Abimelech routed him, and he fled before him; and many fell slain right up to the entrance of the gate.	40 Abimélek persiguió a Gaal, pero se le escapó; y muchos cayeron muertos antes de llegar a la puerta.
41 Abimelech returned to Arumah, but Zebul drove Gaal and his kinsmen from Shechem, which they had occupied.	41 Abimélek habitó en Arumá; y Zebul expulsó a Gaal y a sus hermanos y no les dejó habitar en Siquem.
42 The next day, when the people were taking the field, it was reported to Abimelech,	42 Al día siguiente el pueblo salió al campo. Se dio aviso de ello a Abimélek,
43 who divided the men he had into three companies, and set up an ambush in the fields. He watched till he saw the people leave the city, and then rose against them for the attack.	43 que tomó su tropa, la repartió en tres grupos y tendió una emboscada en el campo. Cuando vio que la gente salía de la ciudad, cayó sobre ellos y los derrotó.
44 Abimelech and the company with him dashed in and stood by the entrance of the city gate, while the other two companies rushed upon all who were in the field and attacked them.	44 Abimélek y el grupo que estaba con él, atacó y tomó posiciones a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; los otros dos grupos se lanzaron contra todos los que estaban en el campo y los derrotaron.
45 That entire day Abimelech fought against the city, and captured it. He then killed its inhabitants and demolished the city, sowing the site with salt.	45 Todo aquel día estuvo Abimélek atacando a la ciudad. Cuando la tomó, mató a la población, arrasó la ciudad y la sembró de sal.
46 When they heard of this, all the citizens of Migdal-shechem went into the crypt of the temple of El-berith.	46 Al saberlo los vecinos de Migdal Siquem se metieron en la cripta del templo de El Berit.
47 It was reported to Abimelech that all the citizens of Migdal-shechem were gathered together.	47 Se comunicó a Abimélek que todos los señores de Migdal Siquem estaban juntos;
48 So he went up Mount Zalmon with all his soldiers, took his axe in his hand, and cut down some brushwood. This he lifted to his shoulder, then said to the men with him, "Hurry! Do just as you have seen me do."	48 entonces Abimélek subió al monte Salmón, con toda su tropa, y tomando un hacha en sus manos, cortó una rama de árbol, la alzó y echándosela al hombro dijo a la tropa que le acompañaba: «Lo que me habéis visto hacer, deprisa, hacedlo también vosotros».
49 So all the men likewise cut down brushwood, and following Abimelech, placed it against the crypt. Then they set the crypt on fire over their heads, so that every one of the citizens of Migdal-shechem, about a thousand men and women, perished.	49 Y todos sus hombres cortaron cada uno su rama; luego siguieron a Abimélek, pusieron las ramas sobre la cripta y prendieron fuego a la cripta con ellos debajo. Así murieron también todos los habitantes de Migdal Siquem, unos mil hombres y mujeres.
50 Abimelech proceeded to Thebez, which he invested and captured.	50 Marchó Abimélek contra Tebés, la asedió y tomó.
51 Now there was a strong tower in the middle of the city, and all the men and women, in a word all the citizens of the city, fled there, shutting themselves in and going up to the roof of the tower.	51 Había en medio de la ciudad una torre fuerte, y en ella se refugiaron todos los hombres y mujeres, y todos los señores de la ciudad. Cerraron por dentro y subieron a la terraza de la torre.
52 Abimelech came up to the tower and fought against it, advancing to the very entrance of the tower to set it on fire.	52 Abimélek llegó hasta la torre, la atacó y alcanzó la puerta de la torre con ánimo de prenderle fuego.
53 But a certain woman cast the upper part of a millstone down on Abimelech's head, and it fractured his skull.	53 Entonces una mujer le arrojó una muela de molino a la cabeza y le partió el cráneo.
54 He immediately called his armor-bearer and said to him, "Draw your sword and dispatch me, lest they say of me that a woman killed me." So his attendant ran him through and he died.	54 El llamó enseguida a su escudero y le dijo: «Desenvaina tu espada y mátame, para que no digan de mí: Lo ha matado una mujer». Su escudero lo atravesó y murió.
55 When the Israelites saw that Abimelech was dead, they all left for their homes.	55 Cuando la gente de Israel vio que Abimélek había muerto, se volvió cada uno a su lugar.
56 Thus did God requite the evil Abimelech had done to his father in killing his seventy brothers.	56 Así devolvió Dios a Abimélek el mal que había hecho a su padre al matar a sus setenta hermanos.
57 God also brought all their wickedness home to the Shechemites, for the curse of Jotham, son of Jerubbaal, overtook them.	57 Y también sobre la cabeza de la gente de Siquem hizo Dios caer toda su maldad. De este modo se cumplió en ellos la maldición de Jotam, hijo de Yerubbaal.
