1 The following are the nations which the LORD allowed to remain, so that through them he might try all those Israelites who had no experience of the battles with Canaan	1 - Sono queste le nazioni che il Signore lasciò sopravvivere per mettere per mezzo di esse alla prova Israele e tutti coloro che non aveano conosciute le guerre dei Cananei,
2 training them in battle, those generations only of the Israelites who would not have had that previous experience):	2 affinchè i figli loro imparassero poi a combattere coi nemici e si abituassero alla guerra:
3 the five lords of the Philistines; and all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwell in the mountain region of Lebanon between Baal-hermon and the entrance to Hamath.	3 i cinque satrapi dei Filistei, tutti i Cananei, i Sidoni e gli Evei, che abitavano sul monte Libano, dal monte Baal Ermon fino all'entrata di Emat.
4 These served to put Israel to the test, to determine whether they would obey the commandments the LORD had enjoined on their fathers through Moses.	4 Il Signore li lasciò sopravvivere per mettere alla prova per mezzo di essi Israele se ascoltasse o no i comandi che il Signore aveva dato ai padri loro per mezzo di Mosè.
5 Besides, the Israelites were living among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.	5 I figli d'Israele adunque abitarono in mezzo ai Cananei, agli Etei, agli Amorrei, ai Ferezei, agli Evei e ai Jebusei
6 In fact, they took their daughters in marriage, and gave their own daughters to their sons in marriage, and served their gods.	6 e presero in moglie le loro figlie e diedero le proprie figlie ai figli di essi e prestarono culto alle loro divinità.
7 Because the Israelites had offended the LORD by forgetting the LORD, their God, and serving the Baals and the Asherahs,	7 Fecero essi il male al cospetto del Signore e dimentichi del loro Dio servirono ai Baalim e ad Astarot.
8 the anger of the LORD flared up against them, and he allowed them to fall into the power of Cushan-rishathaim, king of Aram Naharaim, whom they served for eight years.	8 Perciò adiratosi il Signore contro Israele lo diede nelle mani di Cusan Rasataim re della Mesopotamia, al quale furono soggetti per otto anni.
9 But when the Israelites cried out to the LORD, he raised up for them a savior, Othniel, son of Caleb's younger brother Kenaz, who rescued them.	9 Gridarono allora al Signore e questi suscitò per salvarli e liberarli Otoniele figlio di Cenez, il fratello minore di Caleb.
10 The spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. When he went out to war, the LORD delivered Cushan-risha-thaim, king of Aram, into his power, so that he made him subject.	10 In lui fu lo spirito del Signore e giudicò Israele, ed essendo uscito per combattere, il Signore gli diede nelle mani Cusan Rasataim re della Siria e lo vinse.
11 The land then was at rest for forty years, until Othniel, son of Kenaz, died.	11 Il paese riposò quindi per quarant'anni, fino alla morte di Otoniele figlio di Cenez.
12 Again the Israelites offended the LORD, who because of this offense strengthened Eglon, king of Moab, against Israel.	12 Ma i figli d'Israele tornarono a fare il male al cospetto del Signore, che, in pena delle loro iniquità, fece prevalere sopra di loro Eglon re di Moab.
13 In alliance with the Ammonites and Amalekites, he attacked and defeated Israel, taking possession of the city of palms.	13 Alleatosi egli ai figli di Ammon e di Amalec venne a combattere Israele e s'impadronì della città delle palme
14 The Israelites then served Eglon, king of Moab, for eighteen years.	14 e i figli d'Israele servirono per diciotto anni a Eglon re di Moab.
15 But when the Israelites cried out to the LORD, he raised up for them a savior, the Benjaminite Ehud, son of Gera, who was left-handed. It was by him that the Israelites sent their tribute to Eglon, king of Moab.	15 Ma poi essi alzarono la voce verso il Signore, il quale suscitò loro un salvatore di nome Aod figlio di Gera figlio di Jemini, che era ambidestro. Per suo mezzo i figli d'Israele mandarono regali ad Eglon re di Moab.
16 Ehud made himself a two-edged dagger a foot long, and wore it under his clothes over his right thigh.	16 Aod si era fatto una spada a due tagli, che avea un'impugnatura della lunghezza di un palmo e se l'era legata sotto il mantello, al fianco destro.
17 He presented the tribute to Eglon, king of Moab, who was very fat,	17 Egli offrì i regali ad Eglon re di Moab, il quale era assai pingue.

19 He returned, however, from where the idols are, near Gilgal, and said, "I have a private message for you, O king." And the king said, "Silence!" Then when all his attendants had left his presence,	19 e ritornato da Galgala dove erano degli idoli, disse al re: «Ho da dirti, o re, una parola in segreto». Avendo questi imposto silenzio ed essendo usciti quelli che stavano intorno a lui,
20 and Ehud went in to him where he sat alone in his cool upper room, Ehud said, "I have a message from God for you." So the king rose from his chair,	20 Aod gli si fece innanzi. Il re sedeva solo nella sua stanza estiva e Aod gli disse: «Ho da dirti una parola da parte di Dio». Essendosi quegli levato dal trono,
21 and then Ehud with his left hand drew the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into Eglon's belly.	21 Aod stese la mano sinistra, levò la spada dal fianco destro e gliela cacciò
22 The hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade because he did not withdraw the dagger from his body.	22 con tal forza nel ventre che l'elsa seguì il ferro nella ferita e restò impigliata nell'eccessivo adipe. Nè egli estrasse la spada, ma lasciandola così com'era nel corpo, tosto gli escrementi del ventre uscirono per le segrete vie naturali.
23 Then Ehud went out into the hall, shutting the doors of the upper room on him and locking them.	23 Aod poi chiuse con diligenza le porte della camera e assicuratele con un catenaccio,
24 When Ehud had left and the servants came, they saw that the doors of the upper room were locked, and thought, "He must be easing himself in the cool chamber."	24 per la parte posteriore se ne uscì. Venuti i servi del re, al veder chiuse le porte della camera si dissero: «Forse soddisfa ai suoi bisogni nella camera estiva».
25 They waited until they finally grew suspicious. Since he did not open the doors of the upper room, they took the key and opened them. There on the floor, dead, lay their lord!	25 Avendo aspettato a lungo fino a vergognarsene e vedendo che nessuno apriva, presero la chiave, aprirono e trovarono il loro padrone in terra morto.
26 During their delay Ehud made good his escape and, passing the idols, took refuge in Seirah.	26 Frattanto Aod, mentre quegli erano tutti in iscompiglio, se ne fuggì e, oltrepassato il luogo degli idoli donde era ritornato, venne in Seirat.
27 On his arrival he sounded the horn in the mountain region of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down from the mountains with him as their leader.	27 Tutto a un tratto sonò la tromba sul monte di Efraim e con lui scesero i figli d'Israele. Postosi alla testa,
28 "Follow me," he said to them, "for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your power." So they followed him down and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, permitting no one to cross.	28 egli disse loro: «Seguitemi, giacchè il Signore ci ha dato nelle mani i Moabiti nostri nemici». Discesero dietro a lui e avendo occupato i guadi del Giordano per i quali si passa in Moab, non lasciarono passare nessuno;
29 On that occasion they slew about ten thousand Moabites, all of them strong and valiant men. Not a man escaped.	29 ma uccisero in quel tempo i Moabiti in numero di circa diecimila, tutti uomini forti e robusti; neppur uno di essi potè sfuggire
30 Thus was Moab brought under the power of Israel at that time; and the land had rest for eighty years.	30 e Moab in quel giorno fu umiliato sotto la mano d'Israele e la terra riposò per ottant'anni.
31 After him there was Shamgar, son of Anath, who slew six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He, too, rescued Israel.	31 Dopo costui venne Samgar figlio di Anat, che uccise con un vomere seicento Filistei, e anch'egli fu un difensore d'Israele.
