Joshua 9

1 When the news reached the kings west of the Jordan, in the mountain regions and in the foothills, and all along the coast of the Great Sea as far as Lebanon: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites,	1 ויהי כשמע כל המלכים אשר בעבר הירדן בהר ובשפלה ובכל חוף הים הגדול אל מול הלבנון החתי והאמרי הכנעני הפרזי החוי והיבוסי
2 they all formed an alliance to launch a common attack against Joshua and Israel.	2 ויתקבצו יחדו להלחם עם יהושע ועם ישראל פה אחד
3 On learning what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, the inhabitants of Gibeon	3 וישבי גבעון שמעו את אשר עשה יהושע ליריחו ולעי
4 put into effect a device of their own. They chose provisions for a journey, making use of old sacks for their asses, and old wineskins, torn and mended.	4 ויעשו גם המה בערמה וילכו ויצטירו ויקחו שקים בלים לחמוריהם ונאדות יין בלים ומבקעים ומצררים
5 They wore old, patched sandals and shabby garments; and all the bread they took was dry and crumbly.	5 ונעלות בלות ומטלאות ברגליהם ושלמות בלות עליהם וכל לחם צידם יבש היה נקדים
6 Thus they journeyed to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, where they said to him and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a distant land to propose that you make an alliance with us."	6 וילכו אל יהושע אל המחנה הגלגל ויאמרו אליו ואל איש ישראל מארץ רחוקה באנו ועתה כרתו לנו ברית
7 But the men of Israel replied to the Hivites, "You may be living in land that is ours. How, then, can we make an alliance with you?"	7 ויאמרו איש ישראל אל החוי אולי בקרבי אתה יושב ואיך אכרות לך ברית
8 But they answered Joshua, "We are your servants." Then Joshua asked them, "Who are you? Where do you come from?"	8 ויאמרו אל יהושע עבדיך אנחנו ויאמר אלהם יהושע מי אתם ומאין תבאו
9 They answered him, "Your servants have come from a far-off land, because of the fame of the LORD, your God. For we have heard reports of all that he did in Egypt	9 ויאמרו אליו מארץ רחוקה מאד באו עבדיך לשם יהוה אלהיך כי שמענו שמעו ואת כל אשר עשה במצרים
10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth.	10 ואת כל אשר עשה לשני מלכי האמרי אשר בעבר הירדן לסיחון מלך חשבון ולעוג מלך הבשן אשר בעשתרות
11 So our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, 'Take along provisions for the journey and go to meet them. Say to them: We are your servants; we propose that you make an alliance with us.'	11 ויאמרו אלינו זקינינו וכל ישבי ארצנו לאמר קחו בידכם צידה לדרך ולכו לקראתם ואמרתם אליהם עבדיכם אנחנו ועתה כרתו לנו ברית
12 This bread of ours was still warm when we brought it from home as provisions the day we left to come to you, but now it is dry and crumbled.	12 זה לחמנו חם הצטידנו אתו מבתינו ביום צאתנו ללכת אליכם ועתה הנה יבש והיה נקדים
13 Here are our wineskins, which were new when we filled them, but now they are torn. Look at our garments and sandals, which are worn out from the very long journey."	13 ואלה נאדות היין אשר מלאנו חדשים והנה התבקעו ואלה שלמותינו ונעלינו בלו מרב הדרך מאד
14 Then the Israelite princes partook of their provisions, without seeking the advice of the LORD.	14 ויקחו האנשים מצידם ואת פי יהוה לא שאלו
15 So Joshua made an alliance with them and entered into an agreement to spare them, which the princes of the community sealed with an oath.	15 ויעש להם יהושע שלום ויכרת להם ברית לחיותם וישבעו להם נשיאי העדה
16 Three days after the agreement was entered into, the Israelites learned that these people were from nearby, and would be living in Israel.	16 ויהי מקצה שלשת ימים אחרי אשר כרתו להם ברית וישמעו כי קרבים הם אליו ובקרבו הם ישבים
17 The third day on the road, the Israelites came to their cities of Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-jearim,	17 ויסעו בני ישראל ויבאו אל עריהם ביום השלישי ועריהם גבעון והכפירה ובארות וקרית יערים
18 but did not attack them, because the princes of the community had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. When the entire community grumbled against the princes,	18 ולא הכום בני ישראל כי נשבעו להם נשיאי העדה ביהוה אלהי ישראל וילנו כל העדה על הנשיאים
19 these all remonstrated with the people, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and so we cannot harm them.	19 ויאמרו כל הנשיאים אל כל העדה אנחנו נשבענו להם ביהוה אלהי ישראל ועתה לא נוכל לנגע בהם
20 Let us therefore spare their lives and so deal with them that we shall not be punished for the oath we have sworn to them."	20 זאת נעשה להם והחיה אותם ולא יהיה עלינו קצף על השבועה אשר נשבענו להם
21 Thus the princes recommended that they be let live, as hewers of wood and drawers of water for the entire community; and the community did as the princes advised them.	21 ויאמרו אליהם הנשיאים יחיו ויהיו חטבי עצים ושאבי מים לכל העדה כאשר דברו להם הנשיאים
22 Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said to them, "Why did you lie to us and say that you lived at a great distance from us, when you will be living in our very midst?	22 ויקרא להם יהושע וידבר אליהם לאמר למה רמיתם אתנו לאמר רחוקים אנחנו מכם מאד ואתם בקרבנו ישבים
23 For this are you accursed: every one of you shall always be a slave (hewers of wood and drawers of water) for the house of my God."	23 ועתה ארורים אתם ולא יכרת מכם עבד וחטבי עצים ושאבי מים לבית אלהי
24 They answered Joshua, "Your servants were fully informed of how the LORD, your God, commanded his servant Moses that you be given the entire land and that all its inhabitants be destroyed before you. Since, therefore, at your advance, we were in great fear for our lives, we acted as we did.	24 ויענו את יהושע ויאמרו כי הגד הגד לעבדיך את אשר צוה יהוה אלהיך את משה עבדו לתת לכם את כל הארץ ולהשמיד את כל ישבי הארץ מפניכם ונירא מאד לנפשתינו מפניכם ונעשה את הדבר הזה
25 And now that we are in your power, do with us what you think fit and right."	25 ועתה הננו בידך כטוב וכישר בעיניך לעשות לנו עשה
26 Joshua did what he had decided: while he saved them from being killed by the Israelites,	26 ויעש להם כן ויצל אותם מיד בני ישראל ולא הרגום
27 at the same time he made them, as they still are, hewers of wood and drawers of water for the community and for the altar of the LORD, in the place of the LORD'S choice.	27 ויתנם יהושע ביום ההוא חטבי עצים ושאבי מים לעדה ולמזבח יהוה עד היום הזה אל המקום אשר יבחר
