NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Then Joshua, son of Nun, secretly sent out two spies from Shittim, saying, "Go, reconnoiter the land and Jericho." When the two reached Jericho, they went into the house of a harlot named Rahab, where they lodged.	1 Josué, hijo de Nun, envió clandestinamente desde Sitím a dos espías, con la siguiente consigna: «Vayan a observar el terreno». Ellos partieron y, al llegar a Jericó, entraron en casa de una prostituta llamada Rajab, donde se alojaron.
2 But a report was brought to the king of Jericho that some Israelites had come there that night to spy out the land.	2 Cuando se notificó al rey de Jericó que unos hombres israelitas habían llegado durante la noche para observar el terreno,
3 So the king of Jericho sent Rahab the order, "Put out the visitors who have entered your house, for they have come to spy out the entire land."	3 mandó decir a Rajab: «Saca afuera a esos hombres que vinieron a verte, los que entraron en tu casa, porque han venido únicamente para observar todo el país».
4 The woman had taken the two men and hidden them, so she said, "True, the men you speak of came to me, but I did not know where they came from.	4 Pero la mujer tomó a los dos hombres, los escondió y declaró: «Es verdad que esos hombres vinieron aquí, pero yo no sabía de dónde eran.
5 At dark, when it was time for the gate to be shut, they left, and I do not know where they went. You will have to pursue them immediately to overtake them."	5 Se fueron al caer la noche, cuando estaban por cerrarse las puertas de la ciudad, y no sé adónde habrán ido. Salgan en seguida detrás de ellos, porque todavía pueden alcanzarlos».
6 Now, she had led them to the roof, and hidden them among her stalks of flax spread out there.	6 En realidad, los había hecho subir a la terraza, ocultándolos entre unos haces de lino extendidos allí.
7 But the pursuers set out along the way to the fords of the Jordan, and once they had left, the gate was shut.	7 Entonces unos hombres salieron a perseguirlos en dirección al Jordán, hacia los vados; e inmediatamente después que los perseguidores salieron detrás de ellos, se cerraron las puertas de la ciudad.
8 Before the spies fell asleep, Rahab came to them on the roof	8 Cuando Rajab subió a la terraza, donde estaban los espías, estos aún no se habían acostado.
9 and said: "I know that the LORD has given you the land, that a dread of you has come upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are overcome with fear of you.	9 Ella les dijo: «Yo sé que el Señor les ha entregado este país, porque el terror que ustedes inspiran se ha apoderado de nosotros, y todos los habitantes han quedado espantados a la vista de ustedes.
10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and how you dealt with Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, whom you doomed to destruction.	10 Nosotros hemos oído cómo el Señor secó las aguas del Mar Rojo cuando ustedes salían de Egipto, y cómo ustedes trataron a Sijón y a Og, los dos reyes amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán y que ustedes condenaron al exterminio.
11 At these reports, we are disheartened; everyone is discouraged because of you, since the LORD, your God, is God in heaven above and on earth below.	11 Al enterarnos de eso, nuestro corazón desfalleció, y ya no hay nadie que tenga ánimo para oponerles resistencia, porque el Señor, su Dios, es Dios allá arriba, en el cielo, y aquí abajo, en la tierra.
12 Now then, swear to me by the LORD that, since I am showing kindness to you, you in turn will show kindness to my family; and give me an unmistakable token	12 Por eso, júrenme ahora mismo por el Señor, que así como yo los traté con bondad, ustedes tratarán de la misma manera a mi familia. Dénme una señal segura
13 that you are to spare my father and mother, brothers and sisters, and all their kin, and save us from death."	13 que dejarán con vida a mi padre, a mi madre, a mis hermanos y a mis hermanas, y a todo cuanto les pertenece, y que nos librarán de la muerte».
14 "We pledge our lives for yours," the men answered her. "If you do not betray this errand of ours, we will be faithful in showing kindness to you when the LORD gives us the land."	14 Los hombres le respondieron: «Nosotros responderemos por ustedes con nuestra vida, con tal que no nos delates. Cuando el Señor nos entregue este país, te trataremos con bondad y lealtad».
15 Then she let them down through the window with a rope; for she lived in a house built into the city wall.	15 Entonces la mujer los descolgó por la ventana con una cuerda, porque su casa daba contra el muro de la ciudad, y ella vivía junto a él.
16 "Go up into the hill country," she suggested to them, "that your pursuers may not find you. Hide there for three days, until they return; then you may proceed on your way."	16 Y les hizo esta recomendación: «Vayan hacia la montaña para que sus perseguidores no puedan alcanzarlos. Manténganse ocultos allí durante tres días, hasta que ellos estén de regreso, y después podrán seguir viaje.»
17 The men answered her, "This is how we will fulfill the oath you made us take:	17 Los hombres le respondieron:
18 When we come into the land, tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you are letting us down; and gather your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house.	18 «Cuando nosotros entremos en el país, tú atarás este cordón escarlata a la ventana por la que nos hiciste bajar, y reunirás contigo, dentro de la casa, a tu padre, a tu madre, a tus hermanos y a toda tu familia.
19 Should any of them pass outside the doors of your house, he will be responsible for his own death, and we shall be guiltless. But we shall be responsible if anyone in the house with you is harmed.	19 Si alguno sale fuera de las puertas de tu casa, su sangre caerá sobre su cabeza y nosotros seremos inocentes. Pero la sangre de todos los que estén contigo dentro de la casa, caerá sobre nuestras cabezas, si alguien pone su mano sobre alguno de ellos.
20 If, however, you betray this errand of ours, we shall be quit of the oath you have made us take."	20 En cambio, si nos delatas, quedaremos libres del juramento que nos has exigido».
21 "Let it be as you say," she replied, and bade them farewell. When they were gone, she tied the scarlet cord in the window.	21 «Que se cumpla lo que acaban de decir», replicó ella, y los dejó partir. Apenas se fueron, la mujer ató a la ventana el cordón escarlata.
22 They went up into the hills, where they stayed three days until their pursuers, who had sought them all along the road without finding them, returned.	22 Los hombres se fueron a la montaña y se quedaron allí tres días, hasta que regresaron los perseguidores, que los habían buscado por todas partes sin encontrarlos.
23 Then the two came back down from the hills, crossed the Jordan to Joshua, son of Nun, and reported all that had befallen them.	23 Entonces los dos hombres volvieron a bajar de la montaña, cruzaron el río, y cuando estuvieron de nuevo con Josué, hijo de Nun, lo informaron de todo lo que les había ocurrido.
24 They assured Joshua, "The LORD has delivered all this land into our power; indeed, all the inhabitants of the land are overcome with fear of us."	24 «No hay duda, le dijeron, que el Señor nos ha entregado el país, porque todos sus habitantes están espantados delante de nosotros».
