NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who was a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.1 Erant autem in ecclesia, quae erat Antiochiae, pro phetae et doctores:Barnabas et Simeon, qui vocabatur Niger, et Lucius Cyrenensis et Manaen, quierat Herodis tetrarchae collactaneus, et Saulus.
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."2 Ministrantibus autem illisDomino et ieiunantibus, dixit Spiritus Sanctus: “ Separate mihi Barnabam etSaulum in opus, ad quod vocavi eos ”.
Then, completing their fasting and prayer, they laid hands on them and sent them off.3 Tunc ieiunantes et orantesimponentesque eis manus dimiserunt illos.
So they, sent forth by the holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there sailed to Cyprus.4 Et ipsi quidem missi ab Spiritu Sancto devenerunt Seleuciam et indenavigaverunt Cyprum
When they arrived in Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. They had John also as their assistant.5 et, cum venissent Salamina, praedicabant verbum Dei insynagogis Iudaeorum; habebant autem et Ioannem ministrum.
When they had traveled through the whole island as far as Paphos, they met a magician named Bar-Jesus who was a Jewish false prophet.6 Et cumperambulassent universam insulam usque Paphum, invenerunt quendam virum magumpseudoprophetam Iudaeum, cui nomen Bariesu,
He was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence, who had summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God.7 qui erat cum proconsule SergioPaulo, viro prudente. Hic, accitis Barnaba et Saulo, quaesivit audire verbumDei;
But Elymas the magician (for that is what his name means) opposed them in an attempt to turn the proconsul away from the faith.8 resistebat autem illis Elymas, magus, sic enim interpretatur nomen eius,quaerens avertere proconsulem a fide.
But Saul, also known as Paul, filled with the holy Spirit, looked intently at him9 Saulus autem, qui et Paulus, repletusSpiritu Sancto, intuens in eum
and said, "You son of the devil, you enemy of all that is right, full of every sort of deceit and fraud. Will you not stop twisting the straight paths of (the) Lord?10 dixit: “ O plene omni dolo et omni fallacia,fili Diaboli, inimice omnis iustitiae, non desines subvertere vias Dominirectas?
Even now the hand of the Lord is upon you. You will be blind, and unable to see the sun for a time." Immediately a dark mist fell upon him, and he went about seeking people to lead him by the hand.11 Et nunc, ecce manus Domini super te; et eris caecus, non videns solemusque ad tempus ”. Et confestim cecidit in eum caligo et tenebrae, etcircumiens quaerebat, qui eum manum darent.
When the proconsul saw what had happened, he came to believe, for he was astonished by the teaching about the Lord.12 Tunc proconsul, cum vidissetfactum, credidit admirans super doctrinam Domini.
From Paphos, Paul and his companions set sail and arrived at Perga in Pamphylia. But John left them and returned to Jerusalem.13 Et cum a Papho navigassent, qui erant cum Paulo, venerunt Pergen Pamphyliae;Ioannes autem discedens ab eis reversus est Hierosolymam.
They continued on from Perga and reached Antioch in Pisidia. On the sabbath they entered (into) the synagogue and took their seats.14 Illi veropertranseuntes, a Perge venerunt Antiochiam Pisidiae, et ingressi synagogam diesabbatorum sederunt.
After the reading of the law and the prophets, the synagogue officials sent word to them, "My brothers, if one of you has a word of exhortation for the people, please speak."15 Post lectionem autem Legis et Prophetarum, miseruntprincipes synagogae ad eos dicentes: “ Viri fratres, si quis est in vobissermo exhortationis ad plebem, dicite! ”.
So Paul got up, motioned with his hand, and said, "Fellow Israelites and you others who are God-fearing, listen.16 Surgens autem Paulus et manu silentium indicens ait: “ Viri Israelitae etqui timetis Deum, audite.
The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and exalted the people during their sojourn in the land of Egypt. With uplifted arm he led them out of it17 Deus plebis huius Israel elegit patres nostros etplebem exaltavit, cum essent incolae in terra Aegypti, et in brachio excelsoeduxit eos ex ea;
and for about forty years he put up with them in the desert.18 et per quadraginta fere annorum tempus mores eorumsustinuit in deserto;
When he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance19 et destruens gentes septem in terra Chanaan sortedistribuit terram eorum,
at the end of about four hundred and fifty years. After these things he provided judges up to Samuel (the) prophet.20 quasi quadringentos et quinquaginta annos. Et posthaec dedit iudices usque ad Samuel prophetam.
Then they asked for a king. God gave them Saul, son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.21 Et exinde postulaverunt regem,et dedit illis Deus Saul filium Cis, virum de tribu Beniamin, annis quadraginta.
Then he removed him and raised up David as their king; of him he testified, 'I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will carry out my every wish.'22 Et amoto illo, suscitavit illis David in regem, cui et testimonium perhibensdixit: “Inveni David filium Iesse, virum secundum cor meum, qui faciet omnesvoluntates meas”.
From this man's descendants God, according to his promise, has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus.23 Huius Deus ex semine secundum promissionem eduxit Israel salvatorem Iesum,
John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel;24 praedicante Ioanne ante adventum eius baptismum paenitentiae omni populo Israel.
and as John was completing his course, he would say, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.'25 Cum impleret autem Ioannes cursum suum, dicebat: “Quid me arbitramini esse?Non sum ego; sed ecce venit post me, cuius non sum dignus calceamenta pedumsolvere”.
"My brothers, children of the family of Abraham, and those others among you who are God-fearing, to us this word of salvation has been sent.26 Viri fratres, filii generis Abraham et qui in vobis timent Deum, nobis verbumsalutis huius missum est.
The inhabitants of Jerusalem and their leaders failed to recognize him, and by condemning him they fulfilled the oracles of the prophets that are read sabbath after sabbath.27 Qui enim habitabant Ierusalem et principes eorum,hunc ignorantes et voces Prophetarum, quae per omne sabbatum leguntur,iudicantes impleverunt;
For even though they found no grounds for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him put to death,28 et nullam causam mortis invenientes petierunt aPilato, ut interficeretur;
and when they had accomplished all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and placed him in a tomb.29 cumque consummassent omnia, quae de eo scriptaerant, deponentes eum de ligno posuerunt in monumento.
But God raised him from the dead,30 Deus vero suscitaviteum a mortuis;
and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These are (now) his witnesses before the people.31 qui visus est per dies multos his, qui simul ascenderant cumeo de Galilaea in Ierusalem, qui nunc sunt testes eius ad plebem.
We ourselves are proclaiming this good news to you that what God promised our ancestors32 Et nos vobis evangelizamus eam, quae ad patres promissio facta est,
he has brought to fulfillment for us, (their) children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second psalm, 'You are my son; this day I have begotten you.'33 quoniam hanc Deus adimplevit filiis eorum, nobis resuscitans Iesum, sicut et inPsalmo secundo scriptum est:
“Filius meus es tu; ego hodie genui te”.
And that he raised him from the dead never to return to corruption he declared in this way, 'I shall give you the benefits assured to David.'34 Quod autem suscitaverit eum a mortuis, amplius iam non reversurum incorruptionem, ita dixit: “Dabo vobis sancta David fidelia”.
That is why he also says in another psalm, 'You will not suffer your holy one to see corruption.'35 Ideoque et in alio dicit:
“Non dabis Sanctum tuum videre corruptionem”.
Now David, after he had served the will of God in his lifetime, fell asleep, was gathered to his ancestors, and did see corruption.36 David enim sua generatione cum administrasset voluntati Dei, dormivit etappositus est ad patres suos et vidit corruptionem;
But the one whom God raised up did not see corruption.37 quem vero Deussuscitavit, non vidit corruptionem.
You must know, my brothers, that through him forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed to you, (and) in regard to everything from which you could not be justified under the law of Moses,38 Notum igitur sit vobis, viri fratres,quia per hunc vobis remissio peccatorum annuntiatur; ab omnibus, quibus nonpotuistis in lege Moysi iustificari,
in him every believer is justified.39 in hoc omnis, qui credit, iustificatur.
Be careful, then, that what was said in the prophets not come about:40 Videte ergo, ne superveniat, quod dictum est in Prophetis:
'Look on, you scoffers, be amazed and disappear. For I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will never believe even if someone tells you.'"41 “Videte, contemptores,
et admiramini et disperdimini,
quia opus operor ego in diebus vestris,
opus, quod non credetis, si quis enarraverit vobis!” ”.
As they were leaving, they invited them to speak on these subjects the following sabbath.42 Exeuntibus autem illis, rogabant, ut sequenti sabbato loquerentur sibi verbahaec.
After the congregation had dispersed, many Jews and worshipers who were converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to remain faithful to the grace of God.43 Cumque dimissa esset synagoga, secuti sunt multi Iudaeorum et colentiumproselytorum Paulum et Barnabam, qui loquentes suadebant eis, ut permanerent ingratia Dei.
On the following sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.44 Sequenti vero sabbato paene universa civitas convenit audire verbum Domini.
When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said.45 Videntes autem turbas Iudaei, repleti sunt zelo; et contradicebant his, quaea Paulo dicebantur, blasphemantes.
Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject it and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.46 Tunc audenter Paulus et Barnabas dixerunt: “ Vobis oportebat primum loquiverbum Dei; sed quoniam repellitis illud et indignos vos iudicatis aeternaevitae, ecce convertimur ad gentes.
For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.'"47 Sic enim praecepit nobis Dominus:
“Posui te in lumen gentium,
ut sis in salutem usque ad extremum terrae” ”.
The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this and glorified the word of the Lord. All who were destined for eternal life came to believe,48 Audientes autem gentes gaudebant et glorificabant verbum Domini, etcrediderunt, quotquot erant praeordinati ad vitam aeternam;
and the word of the Lord continued to spread through the whole region.49 ferebatur autemverbum Domini per universam regionem.
The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers and the leading men of the city, stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory.50 Iudaei autem concitaverunt honestasinter colentes mulieres et primos civitatis et excitaverunt persecutionem inPaulum et Barnabam et eiecerunt eos de finibus suis.
So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium.51 At illi, excusso pulverepedum in eos, venerunt Iconium;
The disciples were filled with joy and the holy Spirit.52 discipuli quoque replebantur gaudio etSpiritu Sancto.
