NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
Now the apostles and the brothers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles too had accepted the word of God.1 Audierunt autem apostoli et fratres, qui erant in Iudaea, quoniam etgentes receperunt verbum Dei.
So when Peter went up to Jerusalem the circumcised believers confronted him,2 Cum ascendisset autem Petrus in Ierusalem,disceptabant adversus illum, qui erant ex circumcisione,
saying, "You entered the house of uncircumcised people and ate with them."3 dicentes: “Introisti ad viros praeputium habentes et manducasti cum illis! ”.
Peter began and explained it to them step by step, saying,4 Incipiens autem Petrus exponebat illis ex ordine dicens:
"I was at prayer in the city of Joppa when in a trance I had a vision, something resembling a large sheet coming down, lowered from the sky by its four corners, and it came to me.5 “ Ego eram incivitate Ioppe orans et vidi in excessu mentis visionem, descendens vas quoddamvelut linteum magnum quattuor initiis submitti de caelo et venit usque ad me;
Looking intently into it, I observed and saw the four-legged animals of the earth, the wild beasts, the reptiles, and the birds of the sky.6 in quod intuens considerabam et vidi quadrupedia terrae et bestias et reptiliaet volatilia caeli.
I also heard a voice say to me, 'Get up, Peter. Slaughter and eat.'7 Audivi autem et vocem dicentem mihi: “Surgens, Petre,occide et manduca!”.
But I said, 'Certainly not, sir, because nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.'8 Dixi autem: Nequaquam, Domine, quia commune autimmundum numquam introivit in os meum.
But a second time a voice from heaven answered, 'What God has made clean, you are not to call profane.'9 Respondit autem vox secundo de caelo:“Quae Deus mundavit, tu ne commune dixeris”.
This happened three times, and then everything was drawn up again into the sky.10 Hoc autem factum est perter, et retracta sunt rursum omnia in caelum.
Just then three men appeared at the house where we were, who had been sent to me from Caesarea.11 Et ecce confestim tres viriastiterunt in domo, in qua eramus, missi a Caesarea ad me.
The Spirit told me to accompany them without discriminating. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man's house.12 Dixit autemSpiritus mihi, ut irem cum illis nihil haesitans. Venerunt autem mecum et sexfratres isti, et ingressi sumus in domum viri.
He related to us how he had seen (the) angel standing in his house, saying, 'Send someone to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter,13 Narravit autem nobis quomodovidisset angelum ad domum suam stantem et dicentem: “Mitte in Ioppen etaccersi Simonem, qui cognominatur Petrus,
who will speak words to you by which you and all your household will be saved.'14 qui loquetur tibi verba, in quibussalvus eris tu et universa domus tua”.
As I began to speak, the holy Spirit fell upon them as it had upon us at the beginning,15 Cum autem coepissem loqui, deciditSpiritus Sanctus super eos, sicut et super nos in initio.
and I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, 'John baptized with water but you will be baptized with the holy Spirit.'16 Recordatus sumautem verbi Domini, sicut dicebat: “Ioannes quidem baptizavit aqua, vos autembaptizabimini in Spiritu Sancto”.
If then God gave them the same gift he gave to us when we came to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to be able to hinder God?"17 Si ergo aequale donum dedit illis Deussicut et nobis, qui credidimus in Dominum Iesum Christum, ego quis eram quipossem prohibere Deum? ”.
When they heard this, they stopped objecting and glorified God, saying, "God has then granted life-giving repentance to the Gentiles too."18 His autem auditis, acquieverunt et glorificaverunt Deum dicentes: “ Ergo etgentibus Deus paenitentiam ad vitam dedit ”.
Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that arose because of Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to no one but Jews.19 Et illi quidem, qui dispersi fuerant a tribulatione, quae facta fuerat subStephano, perambulaverunt usque Phoenicen et Cyprum et Antiochiam, neminiloquentes verbum; nisi solis Iudaeis.
There were some Cypriots and Cyrenians among them, however, who came to Antioch and began to speak to the Greeks as well, proclaiming the Lord Jesus.20 Erant autem quidam ex eis viri Cypriiet Cyrenaei, qui, cum introissent Antiochiam, loquebantur et ad Graecosevangelizantes Dominum Iesum.
The hand of the Lord was with them and a great number who believed turned to the Lord.21 Et erat manus Domini cum eis; multusque numeruscredentium conversus est ad Dominum.
The news about them reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas (to go) to Antioch.22 Auditus est autem sermo in auribus ecclesiae, quae erat in Ierusalem, superistis, et miserunt Barnabam usque Antiochiam;
When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart,23 qui cum pervenisset et vidissetgratiam Dei, gavisus est et hortabatur omnes proposito cordis permanere inDomino,
for he was a good man, filled with the holy Spirit and faith. And a large number of people was added to the Lord.24 quia erat vir bonus et plenus Spiritu Sancto et fide. Et apposita estturba multa Domino.
Then he went to Tarsus to look for Saul,25 Profectus est autem Tarsum, ut quaereret Saulum;
and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a large number of people, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.26 quemcum invenisset, perduxit Antiochiam. Factum est autem eis, ut annum totumconversarentur in ecclesia et docerent turbam multam, et cognominarentur primumAntiochiae discipuli Christiani.
At that time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch,27 In his autem diebus supervenerunt ab Hierosolymis prophetae Antiochiam;
and one of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine all over the world, and it happened under Claudius.28 etsurgens unus ex eis nomine Agabus significavit per Spiritum famem magnam futuramin universo orbe terrarum; quae facta est sub Claudio.
So the disciples determined that, according to ability, each should send relief to the brothers who lived in Judea.29 Discipuli autem, proutquis habebat, proposuerunt singuli eorum in ministerium mittere habitantibus inIudaea fratribus;
This they did, sending it to the presbyters in care of Barnabas and Saul.30 quod et fecerunt, mittentes ad presbyteros per manumBarnabae et Sauli.
