Deuteronomy 25

1 "When men have a dispute and bring it to court, and a decision is handed down to them acquitting the innocent party and condemning the guilty party,	1 Si entre dos hombres se produce un litigio y ellos acuden a la justicia, se los juzgará, y se absolverá al inocente y se condenará al culpable.
2 if the latter deserves stripes, the judge shall have him lie down and in his presence receive the number of stripes his guilt deserves.	2 Si este último merece ser apaleado, el juez lo obligará a tenderse en el suelo y lo hará castigar en su presencia, con un número de golpes proporcionados a su culpa.
3 Forty stripes may be given him, but no more; lest, if he were beaten with more stripes than these, your kinsman should be looked upon as disgraced because of the severity of the beating.	3 Podrá infligirle hasta cuarenta golpes, pero no más, no sea que castigándolo más de la cuenta, el castigo resulte excesivo y tu hermano quede envilecido a tus ojos.
4 "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out grain.	4 No pondrás bozal al buey que trilla.
5 "When brothers live together and one of them dies without a son, the widow of the deceased shall not marry anyone outside the family; but her husband's brother shall go to her and perform the duty of a brother-in-law by marrying her.	5 Si varios hermanos viven juntos y uno de ellos muere sin tener hijos, la mujer del difunto no se casará con un extraño. El hermano del difunto se unirá con ella y cumplirá con su deber de cuñado.
6 The first-born son she bears shall continue the line of the deceased brother, that his name may not be blotted out from Israel.	6 El primogénito que de ella nazca perpetuará el nombre del hermano difunto, y así su nombre no se borrará de Israel.
7 If, however, a man does not care to marry his brother's wife, she shall go up to the elders at the gate and declare, 'My brother-in-law does not intend to perform his duty toward me and refuses to perpetuate his brother's name in Israel.'	7 Pero si el cuñado se niega a tomarla por esposa, ella subirá a la puerta de la ciudad donde están los ancianos, y dirá: «Mi cuñado se niega a perpetuar en Israel el nombre de su hermano; y no está dispuesto a cumplir en mi favor sus deberes de cuñado».
8 Thereupon the elders of his city shall summon him and admonish him. If he persists in saying, 'I am not willing to marry her,'	8 Entonces los ancianos de su ciudad llamarán a ese hombre y le pedirán una explicación. Si él persiste en su negativa, diciendo: «No quiero casarme con ella»,
9 his sister-in-law, in the presence of the elders, shall go up to him and strip his sandal from his foot and spit in his face, saying publicly, 'This is how one should be treated who will not build up his brother's family!'	9 su cuñada se acercará a él en presencia de los ancianos, le quitará la sandalia del pie, lo escupirá en la cara y le dirá: «Así se debe obrar con el hombre que no edifica la casa de su hermano».
10 And his lineage shall be spoken of in Israel as 'the family of the man stripped of his sandal.'	10 Y en adelante, se lo apodará en Israel: «Casa del descalzo».
11 "When two men are fighting and the wife of one intervenes to save her husband from the blows of his opponent, if she stretches out her hand and seizes the latter by his private parts,	11 Si unos hombres se pelean, y la mujer de uno de ellos, para librar a su marido de los golpes del otro, extiende la mano y lo toma por las partes genitales,
12 you shall chop off her hand without pity.	12 deberás cortarle la mano sin tenerle compasión.
13 "You shall not keep two differing weights in your bag, one large and the other small;	13 No tendrás en tu bolsa dos pesas, una liviana y otra pesada.
14 nor shall you keep two different measures in your house, one large and the other small.	14 No tendrás en tu casa dos medidas, una grande y otra pequeña.
15 But use a true and just weight, and a true and just measure, that you may have a long life on the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you.	15 Deberás tener una pesa exacta y justa, y también una medida exacta y justa, para gozar de una larga vida en el suelo que El Señor, tu Dios, te da.
16 Everyone who is dishonest in any of these matters is an abomination to the LORD, your God.	16 Porque él considera abominable a que procede de esa manera, a cualquiera que comete una injusticia.
17 "Bear in mind what Amalek did to you on the journey after you left Egypt,	17 Recuerda lo que te hizo Amalec cuando ustedes iban por el camino, después que salieron de Egipto:
18 how without fear of any god he harassed you along the way, weak and weary as you were, and cut off at the rear all those who lagged behind.	18 cómo te salió el paso y atacó por la espalda a todos los que se habían quedado a la retaguardia, agotados por el cansancio. Entonces tú estabas fatigado y sin fuerzas, pero él no tuvo temor de Dios.
19 Therefore, when the LORD, your God, gives you rest from all your enemies round about in the land which he is giving you to occupy as your heritage, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens. Do not forget!	19 Por eso, cuando el Señor, tu Dios, te libre definitivamente de todos los enemigos que están a tu alrededor, en la tierra que él te dará en herencia, borrarás de todas partes el recuerdo de Amalec. ¡No lo olvides!
