NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
"When you go out to war against your enemies and you see horses and chariots and an army greater than your own, do not be afraid of them, for the LORD, your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt, will be with you.1 Si exieris ad bellum contra hostes tuos et videris equita tus et currus et maiorem, quam tu habes, adversarii exercitus multitudinem, non timebis eos, quia Dominus Deus tuus tecum est, qui eduxit te de terra Aegypti.
"When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and say to the soldiers:2 Appropinquante autem iam proelio, stabit sacerdos ante aciem et sic loquetur ad populum:
'Hear, O Israel! Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Be not weakhearted or afraid; be neither alarmed nor frightened by them.3 “Audi, Israel: Vos hodie contra inimicos vestros pugnam committitis; non pertimescat cor vestrum, nolite metuere, nolite cedere nec formidetis eos,
For it is the LORD, your God, who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies and give you victory.'4 quia Dominus Deus vester incedit vobiscum et pro vobis contra adversarios vestros dimicabit, ut eruat vos de periculo”.
"Then the officials shall say to the soldiers, 'Is there anyone who has built a new house and not yet had the housewarming? Let him return home, lest he die in battle and another dedicate it.5 Praefecti quoque per singulas turmas, audiente exercitu, proclamabunt: “Quis est homo, qui aedificavit domum novam et non dedicavit eam? Vadat et revertatur in domum suam, ne forte moriatur in bello, et alius dedicet illam.
Is there anyone who has planted a vineyard and never yet enjoyed its fruits? Let him return home, lest he die in battle and another enjoy its fruits in his stead.6 Quis est homo, qui plantavit vineam et necdum vindemiavit eam? Vadat et revertatur in domum suam, ne forte moriatur in bello, et alius homo vindemiet illam.
Is there anyone who has betrothed a woman and not yet taken her as his wife? Let him return home, lest he die in battle and another take her to wife.'7 Quis est homo, qui despondit uxorem et non accepit eam? Vadat et revertatur in domum suam, ne forte moriatur in bello, et alius homo accipiat eam”.
In fine, the officials shall say to the soldiers, 'Is there anyone who is afraid and weakhearted? Let him return home, lest he make his fellows as fainthearted as himself.'8 His dictis, addent reliqua et loquentur ad populum: “Quis est homo formidulosus et corde pavido? Vadat et revertatur in domum suam, ne pavere faciat corda fratrum suorum, sicut ipse timore perterritus est”.
"When the officials have finished speaking to the soldiers, military officers shall be appointed over the army.9 Cumque praefecti finem loquendi ad populum fecerint, constituantur duces exercitus in capite populi.
"When you march up to attack a city, first offer it terms of peace.10 Si quando accesseris ad expugnandam civitatem, offeres ei primum pacem;
If it agrees to your terms of peace and opens its gates to you, all the people to be found in it shall serve you in forced labor.11 si receperit et aperuerit tibi portas, cunctus populus, qui in ea est, serviet tibi sub tributo.
But if it refuses to make peace with you and instead offers you battle, lay siege to it,12 Sin autem foedus inire noluerit et coeperit contra te bellum, oppugnabis eam.
and when the LORD, your God, delivers it into your hand, put every male in it to the sword;13 Cumque tradiderit Dominus Deus tuus illam in manu tua, percuties omne, quod in ea generis masculini est, in ore gladii
but the women and children and livestock and all else in it that is worth plundering you may take as your booty, and you may use this plunder of your enemies which the LORD, your God, has given you.14 absque mulieribus et infantibus, iumentis et ceteris, quae in civitate sunt. Omnem praedam hanc diripies tibi et comedes de spoliis hostium tuorum, quae Dominus Deus tuus dederit tibi.
"That is how you shall deal with any city at a considerable distance from you, which does not belong to the peoples of this land.15 Sic facies cunctis civitatibus, quae a te procul valde sunt et non sunt de gentium istarum urbibus, quas in possessionem accepturus es.
But in the cities of those nations which the LORD, your God, is giving you as your heritage, you shall not leave a single soul alive.16 De his autem civitatibus, quae dabuntur tibi, nullum omnino permittes vivere,
You must doom them all-the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites-as the LORD, your God, has commanded you,17 sed interficies in ore gladii, Hetthaeum videlicet et Amorraeum et Chananaeum, Pherezaeum et Hevaeum et Iebusaeum, sicut praecepit tibi Dominus Deus tuus,
lest they teach you to make any such abominable offerings as they make to their gods, and you thus sin against the LORD, your God.18 ne forte doceant vos facere cunctas abominationes, quas ipsi operati sunt diis suis, et peccetis in Dominum Deum vestrum.
"When you are at war with a city and have to lay siege to it for a long time before you capture it, you shall not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them. You may eat their fruit, but you must not cut down the trees. After all, are the trees of the field men, that they should be included in your siege?19 Quando obsederis civitatem multo tempore et munitionibus circumdederis, ut expugnes eam, non immittes securim in arbores eius, de quibus vesci potes, nec succidas eas. Numquid homo est arbor campi, ut eam obsideas?
However, those trees which you know are not fruit trees you may destroy, cutting them down to build siegeworks with which to reduce the city that is resisting you.20 Si qua autem ligna non sunt pomifera, succide illa et exstrue machinas, donec capias civitatem, quae contra te dimicat.
