NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
"At that time the LORD said to me, 'Cut two tablets of stone like the former; then come up the mountain to me. Also make an ark of wood.1 At that time the LORD said unto me, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make thee an ark of wood.
I will write upon the tablets the commandments that were on the former tablets that you broke, and you shall place them in the ark.'2 And I will write on the tables the words that were in the first tables which thou brakest, and thou shalt put them in the ark.
So I made an ark of acacia wood, and cut two tablets of stone like the former, and went up the mountain carrying the two tablets.3 And I made an ark of shittim wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine hand.
The LORD then wrote on them, as he had written before, the ten commandments which he spoke to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. After the LORD had given them to me,4 And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the LORD spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the LORD gave them unto me.
I turned and came down the mountain, and placed the tablets in the ark I had made. There they have remained, in keeping with the command the LORD gave me.5 And I turned myself and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they be, as the LORD commanded me.
(The Israelites set out from Beeroth Bene-jaakan for Moserah, where Aaron died and was buried, his son Eleazar succeeding him in the priestly office.6 And the children of Israel took their journey from Beeroth of the children of Jaakan to Mosera: there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and Eleazar his son ministered in the priest's office in his stead.
From there they set out for Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah for Jotbathah, a region where there is water in the wadies.)7 From thence they journeyed unto Gudgodah; and from Gudgodah to Jotbath, a land of rivers of waters.
"At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to be in attendance before the LORD and minister to him, and to give blessings in his name, as they have done to this day.8 At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister unto him, and to bless in his name, unto this day.
For this reason, Levi has no share in the heritage with his brothers; the LORD himself is his heritage, as the LORD, your God, has told him.9 Wherefore Levi hath no part nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD is his inheritance, according as the LORD thy God promised him.
"After I had spent these other forty days and forty nights on the mountain, and the LORD had once again heard me and decided not to destroy you,10 And I stayed in the mount, according to the first time, forty days and forty nights; and the LORD hearkened unto me at that time also, and the LORD would not destroy thee.
he said to me, 'Go now and set out at the head of your people, that they may enter in and occupy the land which I swore to their fathers I would give them.'11 And the LORD said unto me, Arise, take thy journey before the people, that they may go in and possess the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give unto them.
"And now, Israel, what does the LORD, your God, ask of you but to fear the LORD, your God, and follow his ways exactly, to love and serve the LORD, your God, with all your heart and all your soul,12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD which I enjoin on you today for your own good?13 To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?
Think! The heavens, even the highest heavens, belong to the LORD, your God, as well as the earth and everything on it.14 Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD's thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.
Yet in his love for your fathers the LORD was so attached to them as to choose you, their descendants, in preference to all other peoples, as indeed he has now done.15 Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.
Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and be no longer stiff-necked.16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.
For the LORD, your God, is the God of gods, the LORD of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who has no favorites, accepts no bribes;17 For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:
who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and befriends the alien, feeding and clothing him.18 He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.
So you too must befriend the alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt.19 Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
The LORD, your God, shall you fear, and him shall you serve; hold fast to him and swear by his name.20 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name.
He is your glory, he, your God, who has done for you those great and terrible things which your own eyes have seen.21 He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.
Your ancestors went down to Egypt seventy strong, and now the LORD, your God, has made you as numerous as the stars of the sky.22 Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now the LORD thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.
