NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
saying, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage."2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born.4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet:5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
'And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.'"6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance.7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage."8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was.9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
They were overjoyed at seeing the star,10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
When they had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him."13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt.14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, "Out of Egypt I called my son."15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became furious. He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi.16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.
Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet:17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,
"A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be consoled, since they were no more."18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead."20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.
He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel.21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go back there. And because he had been warned in a dream, he departed for the region of Galilee.22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:
He went and dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazorean."23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
