1 The LORD said to Moses,	1 Il Signore parlò a Mosè e disse:
2 "Avenge the Israelites on the Midianites, and then you shall be taken to your people."	2 «Compi la vendetta degli Israeliti contro i Madianiti, quindi sarai riunito ai tuoi padri».
3 So Moses told the people, "Select men from your midst and arm them for war, to attack the Midianites and execute the LORD'S vengeance on them.	3 Mosè disse al popolo: «Si armino fra voi uomini per l’esercito e marcino contro Madian, per eseguire la vendetta del Signore su Madian.
4 From each of the tribes of Israel you shall send a band of one thousand men to war."	4 Manderete in guerra mille uomini per tribù, per tutte le tribù d'Israele».
5 From the clans of Israel, therefore, a thousand men of each tribe were levied, so that there were twelve thousand men armed for war.	5 Così furono reclutati, tra le migliaia d'Israele, mille uomini per tribù, cioè dodicimila armati per la guerra.
6 Moses sent them out on the campaign, a thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of Eleazar, the priest for the campaign, who had with him the sacred vessels and the trumpets for sounding the alarm.	6 Mosè mandò in guerra quei mille uomini per tribù e con loro Fineès, figlio del sacerdote Eleàzaro, il quale portava gli oggetti sacri e aveva in mano le trombe dell'acclamazione.
7 They waged war against the Midianites, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and killed every male among them.	7 Marciarono dunque contro Madian, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè, e uccisero tutti i maschi.
8 Besides those slain in battle, they killed the five Midianite kings: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba; and they also executed Balaam, son of Beor, with the sword.	8 Tra i caduti uccisero anche i re di Madian Evì, Rekem, Sur, Cur e Reba, cioè cinque re di Madian; uccisero di spada anche Balaam figlio di Beor.
9 But the Israelites kept the women of the Midianites with their little ones as captives, and all their herds and flocks and wealth as spoil,	9 Gli Israeliti fecero prigioniere le donne di Madian e i loro fanciulli e catturarono come bottino tutto il loro bestiame, tutte le loro greggi e ogni loro bene;
10 while they set on fire all the towns where they had settled and all their encampments.	10 appiccarono il fuoco a tutte le città che quelli abitavano e a tutti i loro recinti,
11 Then they took all the booty, with the people and beasts they had captured, and brought the captives, together with the spoils and booty,	11 e presero tutto il bottino e tutta la preda, gente e bestiame.
12 to Moses and the priest Eleazar and to the Israelite community at their camp on the plains of Moab, along the Jericho stretch of the Jordan.	12 Poi condussero i prigionieri, la preda e il bottino a Mosè, al sacerdote Eleàzaro e alla comunità degli Israeliti, accampati nelle steppe di Moab, presso il Giordano di Gerico.
13 When Moses and the priest Eleazar, with all the princes of the community, went outside the camp to meet them,	13 Mosè, il sacerdote Eleàzaro e tutti i prìncipi della comunità uscirono loro incontro fuori dell'accampamento.
14 Moses became angry with the officers of the army, the clan and company commanders, who were returning from combat.	14 Mosè si adirò contro i comandanti dell'esercito, capi di migliaia e capi di centinaia, che tornavano da quella spedizione di guerra.
15 "So you have spared all the women!" he exclaimed.	15 Mosè disse loro: «Avete lasciato in vita tutte le femmine?
16 "Why, they are the very ones who on Balaam's advice prompted the unfaithfulness of the Israelites toward the LORD in the Peor affair, which began the slaughter of the LORD'S community.	16 Proprio loro, per suggerimento di Balaam, hanno insegnato agli Israeliti l’infedeltà verso il Signore, nella vicenda di Peor, per cui venne il flagello nella comunità del Signore.
17 Slay, therefore, every male child and every woman who has had intercourse with a man.	17 Ora uccidete ogni maschio tra i fanciulli e uccidete ogni donna che si è unita con un uomo;
18 But you may spare and keep for yourselves all girls who had no intercourse with a man.	18 ma tutte le fanciulle che non si sono unite con uomini, conservatele in vita per voi.
19 "Moreover, you shall stay outside the camp for seven days, and those of you who have slain anyone or touched anyone slain in battle shall purify yourselves on the third and on the seventh day. This applies both to you and to your captives.	19 Voi poi accampatevi per sette giorni fuori del campo; chiunque ha ucciso qualcuno e chiunque ha toccato un caduto, si purifichi il terzo e il settimo giorno: questo tanto per voi quanto per i vostri prigionieri.
20 You shall also purify every article of cloth, leather, goats' hair, or wood."	20 Purificherete anche ogni veste, ogni oggetto di pelle, ogni lavoro di pelo di capra e ogni oggetto di legno».
21 Eleazar the priest told the soldiers who had returned from combat: "This is what the law, as prescribed by the LORD to Moses, ordains:	21 Il sacerdote Eleàzaro disse agli uomini dell'esercito che erano andati alla battaglia: «Questa è la norma della legge che il Signore ha prescritto a Mosè:
22 Whatever can stand fire, such as gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,	22 “L'oro, l'argento, il bronzo, il ferro, lo stagno e il piombo,
23 you shall put into the fire, that it may become clean; however, it must also be purified with lustral water. But whatever cannot stand fire you shall put into the water.	23 quanto può sopportare il fuoco, lo farete passare per il fuoco e sarà reso puro, purché venga purificato anche con l'acqua della purificazione; quanto non può sopportare il fuoco, lo farete passare per l'acqua.
24 On the seventh day you shall wash your clothes, and then you will again be clean. After that you may enter the camp."	24 Laverete anche le vostre vesti il settimo giorno e sarete puri; poi potrete entrare nell'accampamento”».
25 The LORD said to Moses:	25 Il Signore disse a Mosè:
26 "With the help of the priest Eleazar and of the heads of the ancestral houses, count up all the human captives and the beasts that have been taken;	26 «Tu, con il sacerdote Eleàzaro e con i capi dei casati della comunità, fa' il computo di tutta la preda che è stata fatta: della gente e del bestiame;
27 then divide them evenly, giving half to those who took active part in the war by going out to combat, and half to the rest of the community.	27 dividi la preda a metà fra coloro che, usciti in guerra, hanno sostenuto la battaglia e tutta la comunità.
28 You shall levy a tax for the LORD on the warriors who went out to combat: one out of every five hundred persons, oxen, asses and sheep	28 Dalla parte spettante ai soldati che sono usciti in guerra preleverai un contributo per il Signore: cioè un individuo su cinquecento, tanto delle persone quanto del bestiame grosso, degli asini e del bestiame minuto.
29 in their half of the spoil you shall turn over to the priest Eleazar as a contribution to the LORD.	29 Lo prenderete sulla metà di loro spettanza e lo darai al sacerdote Eleàzaro, come offerta da presentare quale contributo in onore del Signore.
30 From the Israelites' half you shall take one out of every fifty persons, and the same from the different beasts, oxen, asses and sheep, and give them to the Levites, who have charge of the LORD'S Dwelling."	30 Della metà che spetta agli Israeliti prenderai una quota di uno su cinquanta tanto delle persone quanto del bestiame grosso, degli asini e del bestiame minuto; la darai ai leviti, che hanno la custodia della Dimora del Signore».
31 So Moses and the priest Eleazar did this, as the LORD had commanded Moses.	31 Mosè e il sacerdote Eleàzaro fecero come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.
32 This booty, what was left of the loot which the soldiers had taken, amounted to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,	32 Il bottino, cioè tutto ciò che rimaneva della preda fatta dagli uomini dell'esercito, consisteva in seicentosettantacinquemila capi di bestiame minuto,
33 seventy-two thousand oxen,	33 settantaduemila capi di bestiame grosso,
34 sixty-one thousand asses,	34 sessantunmila asini
35 and thirty-two thousand girls who were still virgins.	35 e trentaduemila persone, ossia donne che non si erano unite con uomini.
36 The half that fell to those who had gone out to combat was: three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,	36 La metà, cioè la parte di quelli che erano usciti in guerra, fu di trecentotrentasettemilacinquecento capi di bestiame minuto,
37 of which six hundred and seventy-five fell as tax to the LORD;	37 dei quali seicentosettantacinque per il tributo al Signore;
38 thirty-six thousand oxen, of which seventy-two fell as tax to the LORD;	38 trentaseimila capi di bestiame grosso, dei quali settantadue per il tributo al Signore;
39 thirty thousand five hundred asses, of which sixty-one fell as tax to the LORD;	39 trentamilacinquecento asini, dei quali sessantuno per il tributo al Signore,
40 and sixteen thousand persons, of whom thirty-two fell as tax to the LORD.	40 e sedicimila persone, delle quali trentadue per il tributo al Signore.
41 The taxes contributed to the LORD, Moses gave to the priest Eleazar, as the LORD had commanded him.	41 Mosè diede al sacerdote Eleàzaro il contributo dell'offerta prelevata per il Signore, come il Signore gli aveva ordinato.
42 The half for the other Israelites, which fell to the community when Moses had taken it from the soldiers, was:	42 La metà che spettava agli Israeliti, dopo che Mosè ebbe fatto la spartizione per gli uomini dell'esercito,
43 three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,	43 la metà spettante alla comunità fu di trecentotrentasettemilacinquecento capi di bestiame minuto,
44 thirty-six thousand oxen,	44 trentaseimila capi di bestiame grosso,
45 thirty thousand five hundred asses,	45 trentamilacinquecento asini
46 and sixteen thousand persons.	46 e sedicimila persone.
47 From this, the Israelites' share, Moses, as the LORD had ordered, took one out of every fifty, both of persons and of beasts, and gave them to the Levites, who had charge of the LORD'S Dwelling.	47 Da questa metà che spettava agli Israeliti, Mosè prese la quota di uno su cinquanta degli uomini e degli animali e li diede ai leviti che hanno la custodia della Dimora del Signore, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.
48 Then the officers who had been clan and company commanders of the army came up to Moses	48 I comandanti delle migliaia dell'esercito, capi di migliaia e capi di centinaia, si avvicinarono a Mosè e gli dissero:
49 and said to him, "Your servants have counted up the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.	49 «I tuoi servi hanno fatto il computo dei soldati che erano sotto i nostri ordini e non ne manca neppure uno.
50 So, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD, each of us will bring as an offering to the LORD some gold article he has picked up, such as an anklet, a bracelet, a ring, an earring, or a necklace."	50 Per questo portiamo, in offerta al Signore, ognuno quello che ha trovato di oggetti d'oro: bracciali, braccialetti, anelli, pendenti, collane, per compiere il rito espiatorio per le nostre persone davanti al Signore».
51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, all of it in well-wrought articles.	51 Mosè e il sacerdote Eleàzaro presero da loro quell'oro, tutti gli oggetti lavorati.
52 The gold that they gave as a contribution to the LORD amounted in all to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels. This was from the clan and company commanders;	52 Tutto l'oro del contributo che prelevarono per il Signore, da parte dei capi di migliaia e dei capi di centinaia, pesava sedicimilasettecentocinquanta sicli.
53 what the common soldiers had looted each one kept for himself.	53 Gli uomini dell'esercito si tennero il bottino che ognuno aveva fatto per conto suo.
54 Moses, then, and the priest Eleazar accepted the gold from the clan and company commanders, and put it in the meeting tent as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.	54 Mosè e il sacerdote Eleàzaro presero l'oro dei capi di migliaia e di centinaia e lo portarono nella tenda del convegno come memoriale per gli Israeliti davanti al Signore.
