1 Balaam, however, perceiving that the LORD was pleased to bless Israel, did not go aside as before to seek omens, but turned his gaze toward the desert.	1 E Balaam vedendo esser grato al signore che egli benedicesse Israele, non andò come pel passato a cercare l‘augurio: ma volse la sua faccia al deserto.
2 When he raised his eyes and saw Israel encamped, tribe by tribe, the spirit of God came upon him,	2 e, alzati gli occhi, vidi Israele nelle tende accampato per tribù, e, venutogli addosso lo spirito di Dio, presa la parabola, disse:
3 and he gave voice to his oracle: The utterance of Balaam, son of Beor, the utterance of the man whose eye is true,	3 « Parola di Balaam figlio di Beor, parola dell'uomo dall'occhio chiuso,
4 The utterance of one who hears what God says, and knows what the Most High knows, Of one who sees what the Almighty sees, enraptured, and with eyes unveiled:	4 parola di colui che ode la parola di Dio, che contempla la visione dell'Onnipotente, che cade e gli si aprono gli occhi:
5 How goodly are your tents, O Jacob; your encampments, O Israel!	5 quanto son belli i tuoi padiglioni, o Giacobbe, e le tue tende, o Israele!
6 They are like gardens beside a stream, like the cedars planted by the LORD.	6 Sono come valli selvose, come giardini in riva ad un fiume, come Tabernacolo piantato dal Signore, come cedri lungo le acque.
7 His wells shall yield free-flowing waters, he shall have the sea within reach; His king shall rise higher than. . . . and his royalty shall be exalted.	7 L'acqua traboccherà dalla sua secchia, la sua semenza, avrà abbondanza di acque, il suo re sarà rigettato a causa d'Agag, e sarà tolto il suo regno.
8 It is God who brought him out of Egypt, a wild bull of towering might. He shall devour the nations like grass, their bones he shall strip bare.	8 Dio lo ha, tratto fuori dall'Egitto, e la sua forza è come quella del rinoceront. Divorerà le genti sue nemiche, spezzerà le loro ossa, le trafiggerà colle frecci
9 He lies crouching like a lion, or like a lioness; who shall arouse him? Blessed is he who blesses you, and cursed is he who curses you!	9 si sdraia e dorme come un leone e come una leonessa che nessuno oserà svegliare. Chi ti benedirà sarà benedetto e compreso nella maledizione chi ti maledirà ».
10 Balak beat his palms together in a blaze of anger at Balaam and said to him, "It was to curse my foes that I summoned you here; yet three times now you have even blessed them instead!	10 Ma Balac, sdegnatosi contro Balam, disse, battendo le mani: « Ti ho chiamato a maledire i miei nemici, e tu invece li hai benedetti tre volte!
11 Be off at once, then, to your home. I promised to reward you richly, but the LORD has withheld the reward from you!"	11 Torna casa tua. M'ero proposto di colmarti d'onori; ma il Signore ti ha privato dei preparati onori ».
12 Balaam replied to Balak, "Did I not warn the very messengers whom you sent to me,	12 Balaam rispose a Balac: « E non lo dissi ai messaggeri che mi mandasti:
13 'Even if Balak gave me his house full of silver and gold, I could not of my own accord to anything, good or evil, contrary to the command of the LORD'? Whatever the LORD says I must repeat.	13 Quand'anche mi desse Balac la sua casa piena d'argento e d'oro, non potrei trasgredire l'ordine del Signore Dio mio, per far di mia testa qualche cosa di bene o di male; ma dirò tutto quello che avrà detto il Signore?
14 "But now that I am about to go to my own people, let me first warn you what this people will do to your people in the days to come."	14 Ebbene, torno al mio popolo; ma avanti ti darò un consiglio su ciò che il tuo popolo deve fare a questo popolo negli ultimi tempi ».
15 Then Balaam gave voice to his oracle: The utterance of Balaam, son of Beor, the utterance of the man whose eye is true,	15 Presa adunque la parabola di nuovo, disse: « Parola di Balaam figlio di Beor; parola dell'uomo dall'occhio chiuso;
16 The utterance of one who hears what God says, and knows what the Most High knows, Of one who sees what the Almighty sees, enraptured and with eyes unveiled.	16 parola di colui che ode le parole di Dio, che conosce la dottrina dell'Altissimo, e contempla le visioni dell'Onnipotente, che cadendo ha gli occhi aperti.
17 I see him, though not now; I behold him, though not near: A star shall advance from Jacob, and a staff shall rise from Israel, That shall smite the brows of Moab, and the skulls of all the Shuthites,	17 Io lo vedrò, ma non ora: lo contemplerò, ma non da vicino: UNA STELLA NÀSCERÀ da Giacobbe, e una verga si leverà da Israele, e percuoterà i capi di Moab, e rovinerà tutti i figli di Set.
18 Till Edom is dispossessed, and no fugitive is left in Seir. Israel shall do valiantly,	18 E l'Idumea sarà suo possesso, l'eredità di Seir pas? serà ai suoi nemici, ma Israele agirà con fortezza.
19 and Jacob shall overcome his foes.	19 Da Giacobbe uscirà il dominatore che sterminerà gli avanzi della città ».
20 Upon seeing Amalek, Balaam gave voice to his oracle: First of the peoples was Amalek, but his end is to perish forever.	20 E avendo visto Amalec, prese la parabola e disse: « Amalec è la prima delle nazioni; ma finirà collo sterminio ».
21 Upon seeing the Kenites, he gave voice to his oracle: Your abode is enduring, O smith, and your nest is set on a cliff;	21 E visto anche il Cineo, prese la parabola e disse: « La tua dimora è veramente solida, ma sebbene tu abbia posto il tuo nido nella, rupe asia stato l'eletto della stirpe di Cin, quanto tempo potrai sussistere? Assur ti prenderà ».
22 Yet destined for burning-- even as I watch--are your inhabitants.	22 E presa la parabola, disse ancora: « Ahi! chi sarà vivo quando Dio farà queste cose? sverranno sulle triremi dall'Italia: vinceranno gli Assiri, devasteranno gli Ebrei, e alla fine periranno anch'essi ».
23 Upon seeing. . . . he gave voice to his oracle: Alas, who shall survive of Ishmael,	23 E Balaam si alzò e tornò a casa sua; ed anche Balac se ne andò per la strada per cui era venuto.
24 to deliver his people from the hands of the Kittim? When they have conquered Asshur and conquered Eber, He too shall perish forever.
25 Then Balaam set out on his journey home; and Balak also went his way.
