Jonah 3

1 The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:	1 - E il Signore comunicò la sua parola a Giona una seconda volta dicendogli:
2 "Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you."	2 «Alzati, e vai nella grande città di Ninive, e ivi proclama il bando che ti dirò di proclamare».
3 So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh, according to the LORD'S bidding. Now Nineveh was an enormously large city; it took three days to go through it.	3 E Giona si alzò e andò a Ninive, secondo la parola del Signore. Or Ninive era una città grandissima di tre giornate di cammino.
4 Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a single day's walk announcing, "Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed,"	4 E Giona incominciò ad entrare nella città una giornata di cammino gridando e dicendo: «Ancora quaranta giorni e Ninive sarà distrutta!».
5 when the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.	5 E quei di Ninive credettero a Dio, e indissero un digiuno, e si vestirono di sacco, dal più grande al più piccolo.
6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.	6 E giunsero quelle parole alle orecchie del re di Ninive, ed alzatosi dal suo trono, gettò via i suoi indumenti regali e si vestì di sacco e si sedette nella polvere.
7 Then he had this proclaimed throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles: "Neither man nor beast, neither cattle nor sheep, shall taste anything; they shall not eat, nor shall they drink water.	7 E fece un proclama ed emanò in Ninive un ordine, da parte del re e dei suoi principi, che diceva: «Uomini e animali, buoi e pecore non assaggino nulla, non escano al pascolo e non bevano acqua.
8 Man and beast shall be covered with sackcloth and call loudly to God; every man shall turn from his evil way and from the violence he has in hand.	8 E si coprano di sacco gli uomini e gli animali, e gridino a tutto potere verso il Signore; e ciascuno si converta dalla sua cattiva condotta e dalle azioni inique operate dalle sue mani.
9 Who knows, God may relent and forgive, and withhold his blazing wrath, so that we shall not perish."	9 Chi sa che Dio non si rivolga a noi a perdonarci, e rattenga il furore del suo sdegno e non ci faccia perire!».
10 When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out.	10 E il Signore vide le loro opere, e come si erano convertiti dalla loro cattiva condotta, e ne ebbe compassione; e il male che aveva detto di fare loro più non lo fece.
