Jeremiah 46

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 This is the word of the LORD that came to the prophet Jeremiah against the nations.	1 Parole de Yahvé qui fut adressée au prophète Jérémie concernant les nations.
2 Concerning Egypt. Against the army of Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, which was defeated at Carchemish on the Euphrates by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah:	2 Sur l'Egypte. Contre l'armée du Pharaon Neko, roi d'Egypte, qui se trouvait près du fleuveEuphrate, vers Karkémish, quand Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, la battit; c'était la quatrième année deJoiaqim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda.
3 Prepare shield and buckler! march to battle!	3 Préparez petit et grand boucliers. En avant pour la bataille!
4 Harness the horses, mount, charioteers! Fall in with your helmets; polish your spears, put on your breastplates.	4 Harnachez les chevaux, en selle, cavaliers! Alignez-vous, casque en tête, affûtez les lances,endossez vos cuirasses!
5 What do I see? With broken ranks They fall back; their heroes are routed, They flee headlong without making a stand. Terror on every side, says the LORD!	5 Pourquoi donc les ai-je vus pris de panique, lâchant pied? Leurs braves, battus, s'enfuientéperdument sans se retourner. C'est la terreur de tous côtés, oracle de Yahvé.
6 The swift cannot flee, nor the hero escape: There in the north, on the Euphrates' bank, they stumble and fall.	6 Que le plus rapide ne s'échappe pas, que le plus valeureux ne s'enfuie pas! Vers le Nord, aux rivesde l'Euphrate, ils ont trébuché, ils sont tombés.
7 Who is this that surges forward like the Nile, like rivers of billowing waters?	7 Qui donc montait, pareil au Nil, et comme des torrents bouillonnaient ses eaux?
8 Egypt surges like the Nile, like rivers of billowing waters. "I will surge forward," he says, "and cover the earth, destroying the city and its people.	8 C'est l'Egypte qui montait, pareille au Nil, et comme des torrents bouillonnaient ses eaux. Elledisait: "Je monterai submerger la terre, détruire les villes et leurs habitants!
9 Forward, horses! drive madly, chariots! Set out, warriors, Cush and Put, bearing your shields, Men of Lud, stretching your bows!"	9 Chevaux, chargez! Chars, foncez! Que s'avancent les guerriers, gens de Kush et de Put, porteurs deboucliers, Ludiens qui bandez l'arc!"
10 But this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, vengeance on his foes! The sword devours, is sated, drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts holds a slaughter feast in the northland, on the Euphrates.	10 Or ce jour-là est pour le Seigneur Yahvé Sabaot un jour de vengeance, pour se venger de sesadversaires: l'épée dévore, elle se rassasie, elle s'enivre de leur sang. Car c'est un sacrifice pour le SeigneurYahvé Sabaot, au pays du Nord, sur le fleuve Euphrate.
11 Go up to Gilead, and take balm, O virgin daughter Egypt! No use to multiply remedies; for you there is no cure.	11 Monte en Galaad et prends du baume, vierge, fille de l'Egypte! En vain tu multiplies les remèdes:point de guérison pour toi!
12 The nations hear of your shame, your cries fill the earth. Warrior trips over warrior, both fall together.	12 Les nations ont appris ton déshonneur; de ta clameur la terre est remplie, car le guerrier atrébuché contre le guerrier, ils sont tombés tous les deux.
13 The message which the LORD gave to the prophet Jeremiah concerning the advance of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, to attack the land of Egypt:	13 Parole que Yahvé adressa au prophète Jérémie quand Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, vintpour frapper le pays d'Egypte.
14 Announce it in Egypt, publish it in Migdol, proclaim it in Memphis and Tahpanhes! Say: Take your stand, prepare yourselves, the sword has already devoured your neighbors.	14 Publiez-le en Egypte, faites-le entendre à Migdol, faites-le entendre à Noph et à Tahpanhès!Dites: Dresse-toi, tiens-toi prête, car l'épée dévore autour de toi.
15 Why has Apis fled, your mighty one failed to stand? The LORD thrust him down;	15 Pourquoi Apis a-t-il fui? Pourquoi ton Puissant n'a-t-il pas tenu? Oui, Yahvé l'a culbuté,
16 he stumbled repeatedly, and fell. They said one to another, "Up! let us return to our own people, To the land of our birth, away from the destroying sword."	16 il en fait trébucher beaucoup! Chacun tombe sur son compagnon; ils disent: "Debout! Retournonsà notre peuple et à notre terre natale, loin de l'épée dévastatrice."
17 Call Pharaoh, king of Egypt, by the name "The noise that let its time go by."	17 On a donné ce nom à Pharaon, le roi d'Egypte: du-"Bruit!-mais-il-manque-l'occasion!"
18 As I live, says the King whose name is LORD of hosts, Like Tabor among the mountains he shall come, like Carmel above the sea.	18 Aussi vrai que je vis -- oracle du Roi dont le nom est Yahvé Sabaot -- il va venir, pareil au Taborparmi les monts, au Carmel surplombant la mer.
19 Pack your baggage for exile, capital city of daughter Egypt; Memphis shall become a desert, an empty ruin.	19 Prépare ton paquet d'exilée, habitante, fille de l'Egypte; Noph se changera en désolation, dévastéeet vidée d'habitants.
20 Egypt is a pretty heifer, from the north a horsefly lights upon her.	20 L'Egypte était une génisse magnifique: un taon venu du Nord s'est posé sur elle.
21 The mercenaries in her ranks are like fatted calves; They too turn and flee together, stand not their ground, When the day of their ruin comes upon them, the time of their punishment.	21 Ses mercenaires aussi, chez elle, ressemblaient à des veaux à l'engrais: eux aussi tournent lestalons, ils s'enfuient tous ensemble, ils ne peuvent tenir. Car il arrive sur eux, le Jour de leur ruine, le temps deleur châtiment.
22 She sounds like a retreating reptile! Yes, they come in force; like woodchoppers, they attack her with axes.	22 Sa voix est comme le bruit du serpent qui siffle car ils viennent en masse se jeter sur elle avec deshaches, tels des bûcherons;
23 They cut down her forest, says the LORD, impenetrable though it be; More numerous than locusts, they cannot be counted.	23 ils abattent sa forêt, oracle de Yahvé, alors qu'elle était impénétrable, car ils sont plus nombreuxque les sauterelles, ils sont innombrables.
24 Disgraced is daughter Egypt, handed over to the people of the north.	24 Elle est couverte de honte, la fille de l'Egypte, livrée aux mains d'un peuple du Nord.
25 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, has said: See! I will punish Amon of Thebes, and Egypt, her gods and her kings, Pharaoh, and those who trust in him.	25 Yahvé Sabaot, le Dieu d'Israël, a dit: Voici que je vais visiter Amon de No, le Pharaon, l'Egypte,ses dieux et ses rois, Pharaon et ceux qui se fient à lui.
26 I will hand them over to those who seek their lives, to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and his ministers. But later on Egypt shall be inhabited again, as in times past, says the LORD.	26 Je les livrerai aux mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, aux mains de Nabuchodonosor, roi deBabylone, et aux mains de ses serviteurs. Mais plus tard l'Egypte sera de nouveau habitée, comme aux joursd'autrefois, oracle de Yahvé.
27 But you, my servant Jacob, fear not; be not dismayed, O Israel. Behold, I will deliver you from the far-off land, your descendants, from their land of exile. Jacob shall again find rest, shall be tranquil and undisturbed.	27 Mais toi, ne crains pas, mon serviteur Jacob, ne sois pas terrifié, Israël! Car me voici pour tesauver des terres lointaines, et tes descendants du pays de leur captivité. Jacob reviendra et sera paisible, il seratranquille, sans personne qui l'inquiète.
28 You, my servant Jacob, never fear, says the LORD, for I am with you; I will make an end of all the nations to which I have driven you, But of you I will not make an end: I will chastise you as you deserve, I will not let you go unpunished.	28 Toi, sois sans crainte, mon serviteur Jacob -- oracle de Yahvé -- car je suis avec toi: Je ferail'extermination de toutes les nations où je t'ai dispersé; avec toi je ne ferai pas d'extermination, mais je techâtierai selon le droit, ne te laissant pas impuni.
