Isaiah 47

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Come down, sit in the dust, O virgin daughter Babylon; Sit on the ground, dethroned, O daughter of the Chaldeans. No longer shall you be called dainty and delicate.	1 Descends, assieds-toi dans la poussière, Vierge, fille de Babylone, assieds-toi à terre, sans trône, filledes Chaldéens, car jamais plus on ne t'appellera douce et exquise.
2 Take the millstone and grind flour, remove your veil; Strip off your train, bare your legs, pass through the streams.	2 Prends la meule et broie la farine; dénoue ton voile, relève ta robe, découvre tes jambes, traverse lesrivières.
3 Your nakedness shall be uncovered and your shame be seen; I will take vengeance, I will yield to no entreaty, says our redeemer,	3 Que paraisse ta nudité et que ta honte soit visible; j'exécute ma vengeance et personne ne s'yopposera.
4 Whose name is the LORD of hosts, the Holy One of Israel.	4 Notre rédempteur, Yahvé Sabaot est son nom, le Saint d'Israël, a dit:
5 Go into darkness and sit in silence, O daughter of the Chaldeans, No longer shall you be called sovereign mistress of kingdoms.	5 Assieds-toi en silence, enfonce-toi dans l'ombre, fille des Chaldéens, car jamais plus on ne t'appellerasouveraine des royaumes.
6 Angry at my people, I profaned my inheritance, And I gave them into your hand; but you showed them no mercy, And upon old men you laid a very heavy yoke.	6 J'étais irrité contre mon peuple, j'avais rejeté mon héritage, je l'avais livré entre tes mains. Tu les astraités sans pitié, sur le vieillard tu as fait durement peser ton joug.
7 You said, "I shall remain always, a sovereign mistress forever!" But you did not lay these things to heart, you disregarded their outcome.	7 Tu as dit: "A jamais je serai souveraine éternelle", tu n'as pas réfléchi à cela dans ton coeur, tu n'aspas songé à l'avenir.
8 Now hear this, voluptuous one, enthroned securely, Saying to yourself, "I, and no one else! I shall never be a widow, or suffer the loss of my children"--	8 Maintenant écoute ceci, voluptueuse! toi qui es assise en sécurité et qui dis dans ton coeur: "Moi, sanségale, je ne resterai pas veuve, je ne connaîtrai pas la privation d'enfants!"
9 Both these things shall come to you suddenly, in a single day: Complete bereavement and widowhood shall come upon you For your many sorceries and the great number of your spells;	9 Eh bien, ces deux malheurs fondront sur toi, soudainement, en un jour, privation d'enfants et veuvage,tout à coup ils fondront sur toi, en dépit de tous tes sortilèges, de la puissance de tes incantations.
10 Because you felt secure in your wickedness, and said, "No one sees me." Your wisdom and your knowledge led you astray, And you said to yourself, "I, and no one else!"	10 Tu as eu confiance dans ta méchanceté, tu as dit: "Personne ne me voit." C'est ta sagesse et tascience qui t'ont pervertie, et tu as dit dans ton coeur: "Moi, sans égale."
11 But upon you shall come evil you will not know how to predict; Disaster shall befall you which you cannot allay. Suddenly there shall come upon you ruin which you will not expect.	11 Un malheur fondra sur toi, tu ne sauras comment le conjurer; un désastre fondra sur toi, tu nepourras t'en préserver; soudain fondra sur toi une calamité que tu ne connaîtras pas.
12 Keep up, now, your spells and your many sorceries. Perhaps you can make them avail, perhaps you can strike terror!	12 Reste donc avec tes incantations et tous tes sortilèges dans lesquels tu t'es fatiguée depuis tajeunesse. Peut-être pourras-tu en tirer profit, peut-être sauras-tu faire trembler.
13 You wearied yourself with many consultations, at which you toiled from your youth; Let the astrologers stand forth to save you, the stargazers who forecast at each new moon what would happen to you.	13 Tu t'es épuisée à force de consultations, qu'ils se présentent donc et te sauvent ceux qui détaillent leciel, qui observent les étoiles, qui annoncent chaque mois ce qui va fondre sur toi.
14 Lo, they are like stubble, fire consumes them; They cannot save themselves from the spreading flames. This is no warming ember, no fire to sit before.	14 Voici qu'ils sont comme fétus de paille, le feu les brûlera, ils ne sauveront pas leur vie de l'étreintede la flamme; et ce ne sera pas une braise pour se chauffer, un foyer pour s'y asseoir!
15 Thus do your wizards serve you with whom you have toiled from your youth; Each wanders his own way, with none to save you.	15 Ainsi auront été pour toi tes devins, pour lesquels tu t'es fatiguée depuis ta jeunesse: ils ont erré,chacun devant soi, et pas un ne t'a sauvée.
