1 About this time Antiochus sent his second expedition into Egypt.	1 Alrededor de ese tiempo, Antíoco preparaba su segunda expedición contra Egipto.
2 It then happened that all over the city, for nearly forty days, there appeared horsemen charging in midair, clad in garments interwoven with gold--companies fully armed with lances	2 Y sucedió que por espacio de unos cuarenta días aparecieron en toda la ciudad, corriendo por los aires, jinetes vestidos de oro, tropas armadas divididas en escuadrones, espadas desenvainadas,
3 and drawn swords; squadrons of cavalry in battle array, charges and countercharges on this side and that, with brandished shields and bristling spears, flights of arrows and flashes of gold ornaments, together with armor of every sort.	3 regimientos de caballería en orden de batalla, ataques e incursiones de una y otra parte, movimientos de escudos, nubes de lanzas, disparos de flechas, destellos de guarniciones de oro y corazas de toda clase.
4 Therefore all prayed that this vision might be a good omen.	4 Ante esto, todos rogaban que aquella aparición fuera señal de buen augurio.
5 But when a false rumor circulated that Antiochus was dead, Jason gathered fully a thousand men and suddenly attacked the city. As the defenders on the walls were forced back and the city was finally being taken, Menelaus took refuge in the citadel.	5 Al difundirse el falso rumor de que Antíoco había muerto, Jasón lanzó un ataque imprevisto contra la ciudad con no menos de mil hombres. Como los que estaban en la muralla fueron rechazados y la ciudad al fin fue tomada, Menelao se refugió en la Acrópolis.
6 Jason then slaughtered his fellow citizens without mercy, not realizing that triumph over one's own kindred was the greatest failure, but imagining that he was winning a victory over his enemies, not his fellow countrymen.	6 Jasón masacró sin piedad a sus propios conciudadanos, sin caer en la cuenta de que una victoria sobre ellos era el mayor de los desastres: ¡él se imaginaba que ganaba trofeos de sus enemigos y no a sus propios compatriotas!
7 Even so, he did not gain control of the government, but in the end received only disgrace for his treachery, and once again took refuge in the country of the Ammonites.	7 Sin embargo, no logró adueñarse del poder y finalmente, sin haber conseguido otra cosa que su propio fracaso, tuvo que huir de nuevo al país de Amán.
8 At length he met a miserable end. Called to account before Aretas, king of the Arabs, he fled from city to city, hunted by all men, hated as a transgressor of the laws, abhorred as the butcher of his country and his countrymen. After being driven into Egypt,	8 Su conducta perversa tuvo un final desastroso. Acusado ante Aretas, soberano de los árabes, huyó de ciudad en ciudad; perseguido por todos, aborrecido como transgresor de las leyes y abominado como verdugo de su patria y de sus conciudadanos, fue a parar a Egipto.
9 he crossed the sea to the Spartans, among whom he hoped to find protection because of his relations with them. There he who had exiled so many from their country perished in exile;	9 El que había desterrado a muchos de su patria murió en el destierro, mientras se dirigía a Lacedemonia con la esperanza de encontrar un refugio, apelando a su origen común.
10 and he who had cast out so many to lie unburied went unmourned himself with no funeral of any kind or any place in the tomb of his ancestors.	10 El que había dejado a muchos sin sepultura, no tuvo quien lo llorara; nadie le tributó honras fúnebres y no encontró sitio en el sepulcro de sus antepasados.
11 When these happenings were reported to the king, he thought that Judea was in revolt. Raging like a wild animal, he set out from Egypt and took Jerusalem by storm.	11 Cuando el rey se enteró de lo ocurrido, llegó a la conclusión de que Judea tramaba su independencia. Entonces, volvió de Egipto, enfurecido como una fiera, tomó la ciudad por las armas,
12 He ordered his soldiers to cut down without mercy those whom they met and to slay those who took refuge in their houses.	12 y mandó a los soldados que hirieran sin compasión a todos los que cayeran en sus manos y degollaran a los que intentaran refugiarse en las casas.
13 There was a massacre of young and old, a killing of women and children, a slaughter of virgins and infants.	13 Fue una verdadera matanza de jóvenes y ancianos, una masacre de muchachos, mujeres y niños, una carnicería de muchachas y niños de pecho.
14 In the space of three days, eighty thousand were lost, forty thousand meeting a violent death, and the same number being sold into slavery.	14 En sólo tres días hubo ochenta mil víctimas: cuarenta mil fueron muertos y otros tantos vendidos como esclavos.
15 Not satisfied with this, the king dared to enter the holiest temple in the world; Menelaus, that traitor both to the laws and to his country, served as guide.	15 No contento con esto, Antíoco tuvo la osadía de entrar en el Templo más santo de toda la tierra, llevando como guía a Menelao, el traidor de las leyes y de la patria.
16 He laid his impure hands on the sacred vessels and gathered up with profane hands the votive offerings made by other kings for the advancement, the glory, and the honor of the Place.	16 Con sus manos impuras tomó los objetos sagrados, y arrebató con manos sacrílegas los presentes hechos por otros reyes para realzar la gloria y el honor de ese Lugar.
17 Puffed up in spirit, Antiochus did not realize that it was because of the sins of the city's inhabitants that the Lord was angry for a little while and hence disregarded the holy Place.	17 El se engreía porque no tenía en cuenta que el Señor se había irritado por poco tiempo a causa de los pecados cometidos por los habitantes de la ciudad, y por eso había apartado su mirada del Lugar.
18 If they had not become entangled in so many sins, this man, like Heliodorus, who was sent by King Seleucus to inspect the treasury, would have been flogged and turned back from his presumptuous action as soon as he approached.	18 Si ellos no se hubieran dejado dominar por tantos pecados, también Antíoco habría sido golpeado y hecho desistir de su atrevimiento apenas ingresó en el Santuario, como lo había sido Heliodoro cuando fue enviado por el rey Seleuco para inspeccionar el Tesoro.
19 The Lord, however, had not chosen the people for the sake of the Place, but the Place for the sake of the people.	19 Pero el Señor no eligió al pueblo a causa del pueblo.
20 Therefore, the Place itself, having shared in the people's misfortunes, afterward participated in their good fortune; and what the Almighty had forsaken in his anger was restored in all its glory, once the great Sovereign became reconciled.	20 Por eso, el mismo Lugar, después de haber participado de las desgracias del pueblo, también participó de su restauración y, habiendo sido abandonado en el tiempo de la ira del Todopoderoso, fue de nuevo restaurado con toda su gloria, cuando el gran Soberano se reconcilió con él.
21 Antiochus carried off eighteen hundred talents from the temple, and hurried back to Antioch. In his arrogance he planned to make the land navigable and the sea passable on foot, so carried away was he with pride.	21 Antíoco, después de haber sacado del Templo mil ochocientos talentos, partió en seguida para Antioquía, creyendo presuntuosamente que era capaz de navegar por la tierra y caminar por el mar: tal era la arrogancia de su corazón.
22 But he left governors to harass the nation: at Jerusalem, Philip, a Phrygian by birth, and in character more cruel than the man who appointed him;	22 Pero antes, dejó prefectos para que hicieran daño al pueblo. En Jerusalén, dejó a Filipo, de origen frigio, un hombre de costumbres más bárbaras que el que lo había designado;
23 at Mount Gerizim, Andronicus; and besides these, Menelaus, who lorded it over his fellow citizens worse than the others did. Out of hatred for the Jewish citizens,	23 en el monte Garizim, dejó a Andrónico, y además de estos, a Menelao, que superaba a todos los otros en maldad, por el odio que tenía a sus compatriotas judíos.
24 the king sent Appollonius, commander of the Mysians, at the head of an army of twenty-two thousand men, with orders to kill all the grown men and sell the women and young men into slavery.	24 Antíoco envió a Apolonio, jefe de los mercenarios de Misia, con un ejército de veintidós mil soldados, dándole la orden de degollar a todos los hombres adultos y de vender a las mujeres y a los niños.
25 When this man arrived in Jerusalem, he pretended to be peacefully disposed and waited until the holy day of the sabbath; then, finding the Jews refraining from work, he ordered his men to parade fully armed.	25 Una vez que Apolonio llegó a Jerusalén, fingiendo que venía en sonde paz, esperó hasta el santo día del sábado. Y mientras los judíos observaban el descanso, mandó a sus tropas que hicieran un desfile militar.
26 All those who came out to watch, he massacred, and running through the city with armed men, he cut down a large number of people.	26 Entonces hizo pasar al filo de la espada a todos los que habían salido a ver el espectáculo. Luego de una batida por la ciudad con los soldados armados y mató a una gran muchedumbre.
27 But Judas Maccabeus and about nine others withdrew to the wilderness, where he and his companions lived like wild animals in the hills, continuing to eat what grew wild to avoid sharing the defilement.	27 Mientras tanto, Judas, llamado el Macabeo, formó un grupo de unos diez hombres y se retiró al desierto. Allí vivía entre las montañas con sus compañeros, como las fieras salvajes, sin comer nada más que hierbas, para no incurrir en ninguna impureza.
