1 While the holy city lived in perfect peace and the laws were strictly observed because of the piety of the high priest Onias and his hatred of evil,	1 Tandis que la ville sainte était habitée dans une paix complète et qu'on y observait les lois leplus exactement possible, à cause de la piété du grand prêtre Onias et de sa haine pour le mal,
2 the kings themselves honored the Place and glorified the temple with the most magnificent gifts.	2 il arrivait que les rois eux-mêmes honoraient le saint lieu et rehaussaient la gloire du Templepar les dons les plus magnifiques,
3 Thus Seleucus, king of Asia, defrayed from his own revenues all the expenses necessary for the sacrificial services.	3 si bien que Séleucus, roi d'Asie, couvrait de ses revenus personnels toutes les dépensesnécessaires au service des sacrifices.
4 But a certain Simon, of the priestly course of Bilgah, who had been appointed superintendent of the temple, had a quarrel with the high priest about the supervision of the city market.	4 Mais un certain Simon, de la tribu de Bilga, institué prévôt du Temple, se trouva en désaccordavec le grand prêtre sur la police des marchés de la ville.
5 Since he could not prevail against Onias, he went to Apollonius of Tarsus, who at that time was governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia,	5 Comme il ne pouvait l'emporter sur Onias, il alla trouver Apollonius, fils de Thraséos, qui étaità cette époque le stratège de Coelé-Syrie et de Phénicie.
6 and reported to him that the treasury in Jerusalem was so full of untold riches that the total sum of money was incalculable and out of all proportion to the cost of the sacrifices, and that it would be possible to bring it all under the control of the king.	6 Il rapporta que le trésor de Jérusalem regorgeait de richesses indicibles au point que la quantitédes sommes en était incalculable et nullement en rapport avec le compte exigé par les sacrifices: il était possiblede les faire tomber en la possession du roi.
7 When Apollonius had an audience with the king, he informed him about the riches that had been reported to him. The king chose his minister Heliodorus and sent him with instructions to expropriate the aforesaid wealth.	7 Au cours d'une entrevue avec le roi, Apollonius mit celui-ci au courant des richesses qu'on luiavait dénoncées. Arrêtant son choix sur Héliodore, qui était à la tête des affaires, le roi l'envoya avec ordre deprocéder à l'enlèvement des susdites richesses.
8 So Heliodorus immediately set out on his journey, ostensibly to visit the cities of Coelesyria and Phoenicia, but in reality to carry out the king's purpose.	8 Aussitôt Héliodore se mettait en route, en apparence pour inspecter les villes de Coelé-Syrie etde Phénicie, en fait pour accomplir les intentions du roi.
9 When he arrived in Jerusalem and had been graciously received by the high priest of the city, he told him about the information that had been given, and explained the reason for his presence, and he asked if these things were really true.	9 Arrivé à Jérusalem, et reçu avec bienveillance par le grand prêtre et par la ville, il fit part de cequ'on avait dévoilé et manifesta le but de sa présence, demandant ensuite si véritablement il en était ainsi.
10 The high priest explained that part of the money was a care fund for widows and orphans,	10 Le grand prêtre lui représenta que le trésor contenait les dépôts des veuves et des orphelins
11 and a part was the property of Hyrcanus, son of Tobias, a man who occupied a very high position. Contrary to the calumnies of the impious Simon, the total amounted to four hundred talents of silver and two hundred of gold.	11 et une somme appartenant à Hyrcan, fils de Tobie, personnage occupant une très hautesituation, et qu'à l'encontre de ce que colportait faussement l'impie Simon, il y avait en tout 400 talents d'argentet 200 talents d'or;
12 He added that it was utterly unthinkable to defraud those who had placed their trust in the sanctity of the Place and in the sacred inviolability of a temple venerated all over the world.	12 qu'au reste il était absolument impossible de faire tort à ceux qui s'étaient confiés à la saintetéde ce lieu, à la majesté et à l'inviolabilité d'un Temple vénéré dans le monde entier.
13 But because of the orders he had from the king, Heliodorus said that in any case the money must be confiscated for the royal treasury.	13 Mais Héliodore, en vertu des ordres qu'il avait reçus du roi, soutenait absolument que cesrichesses devaient être confisquées au profit du trésor royal.
14 So on the day he had set he went in to take an inventory of the funds. There was great distress throughout the city.	14 Au jour fixé par lui, il entrait pour dresser un inventaire de ces richesses. Une grande anxiétérégna dans toute la ville.
15 Priests prostrated themselves in their priestly robes before the altar, and loudly begged him in heaven who had given the law about deposits to keep the deposits safe for those who had made them.	15 Revêtus de leurs habits sacerdotaux, les prêtres, prosternés devant l'autel, invoquaient le ciel,auteur de la loi sur les dépôts, le priant de conserver ces biens intacts à ceux qui les avaient déposés.
16 Whoever saw the appearance of the high priest was pierced to the heart, for the changed color of his face manifested the anguish of his soul.	16 A voir l'aspect du grand prêtre, on ne pouvait manquer de sentir une blessure jusqu'au fond ducoeur, tant son air et l'altération de son teint trahissaient l'angoisse de son âme.
17 The terror and bodily trembling that had come over the man clearly showed those who saw him the pain that lodged in his heart.	17 En proie à la frayeur et au tremblement dans tout son corps, cet homme manifestait à ceux quile regardaient la souffrance installée dans son coeur.
18 People rushed out of their houses in crowds to make public supplication, because the Place was in danger of being profaned.	18 Des gens se précipitaient par groupes hors des maisons pour prier tous ensemble parce que lesaint lieu était menacé d'opprobre.
19 Women, girded with sackcloth below their breasts, filled the streets; maidens secluded indoors ran together, some to the gates, some to the walls, others peered through the windows,	19 Les femmes, ceintes de sacs au-dessous des seins, remplissaient les rues; les jeunes filles quiétaient tenues à la maison couraient, les unes aux portes, les autres sur les murs, certaines se penchaient auxfenêtres:
20 all of them with hands raised toward heaven, making supplication.	20 toutes, les mains tendues vers le ciel, proféraient leur supplication.
21 It was pitiful to see the populace variously prostrated in prayer and the high priest full of dread and anguish.	21 C'était pitié de voir la prostration confuse de la multitude et l'appréhension du grand prêtre enproie à une grande inquiétude.
22 While they were imploring the almighty Lord to keep the deposits safe and secure for those who had placed them in trust,	22 Pendant que d'un côté on demandait au Seigneur tout-puissant de garder intacts, en toutesûreté, les dépôts à ceux qui les avaient confiés,
23 Heliodorus went on with his plan.	23 Héliodore, d'autre part, exécutait ce qui avait été décidé.
24 But just as he was approaching the treasury with his bodyguards, the Lord of spirits who holds all power manifested himself in so striking a way that those who had been bold enough to follow Heliodorus were panic-stricken at God's power and fainted away in terror.	24 Il était déjà là avec ses satellites, près du Trésor, lorsque le Souverain des Esprits et de toutePuissance se manifesta, avec un tel éclat que tous ceux qui avaient osé entrer là, frappés par la force de Dieu, setrouvèrent sans vigueur ni courage.
25 There appeared to them a richly caparisoned horse, mounted by a dreadful rider. Charging furiously, the horse attacked Heliodorus with its front hoofs. The rider was seen to be wearing golden armor.	25 A leurs yeux apparut un cheval monté par un redoutable cavalier et richement caparaçonné;bondissant avec impétuosité, il agitait contre Héliodore ses sabots de devant. L'homme qui le montait paraissaitavoir une armure d'or.
26 Then two other young men, remarkably strong, strikingly beautiful, and splendidly attired, appeared before him. Standing on each side of him, they flogged him unceasingly until they had given him innumerable blows.	26 Deux autres jeunes hommes lui apparurent en même temps, d'une force remarquable,éclatants de beauté, couverts d'habits magnifiques; s'étant placés l'un d'un côté, l'autre de l'autre, ils leflagellaient sans relâche, lui portant une grêle de coups.
27 Suddenly he fell to the ground, enveloped in great darkness. Men picked him up and laid him on a stretcher.	27 Héliodore, soudain tombé à terre, fut environné d'épaisses ténèbres. On le ramassa pour lemettre dans une litière,
28 The man who a moment before had entered that treasury with a great retinue and his whole bodyguard was carried away helpless, having clearly experienced the sovereign power of God.	28 et cet homme, qui venait d'entrer dans la chambre dudit Trésor avec un nombreux entourageet tous ses gardes du corps, fut emporté, incapable de s'aider lui-même, par des gens qui reconnaissaientouvertement la souveraineté de Dieu.
29 While he lay speechless and deprived of all hope of aid, due to an act of God's power,	29 Pendant que cet homme, sous le coup de la puissance divine, gisait sans voix, privé de toutespoir et de tout secours,
30 the Jews praised the Lord who had marvelously glorified his holy Place; and the temple, charged so shortly before with fear and commotion, was filled with joy and gladness, now that the almighty Lord had manifested himself.	30 les autres bénissaient le Seigneur qui avait miraculeusement glorifié son saint lieu. Et lesanctuaire, qui un instant auparavant était plein de frayeur et de trouble, fut, par la manifestation du Seigneurtout-puissant, débordant de joie et d'allégresse.
31 Soon some of the companions of Heliodorus begged Onias to invoke the Most High, praying that the life of the man who was about to expire might be spared.	31 Certains des compagnons d'Héliodore s'empressèrent de demander à Onias de prier le Très-Haut et d'accorder la vie à celui qui gisait n'ayant plus qu'un souffle.
32 Fearing that the king might think that Heliodorus had suffered some foul play at the hands of the Jews, the high priest offered a sacrifice for the man's recovery.	32 Dans la crainte que le roi ne soupçonnât par hasard les Juifs d'avoir joué un mauvais tour àHéliodore, le grand prêtre offrit un sacrifice pour le retour de cet homme à la vie.
33 While the high priest was offering the sacrifice of atonement, the same young men in the same clothing again appeared and stood before Heliodorus. "Be very grateful to the high priest Onias," they told him. "It is for his sake that the Lord has spared your life.	33 Alors que le grand prêtre offrait le sacrifice d'expiation, les mêmes jeunes hommesapparurent à Héliodore revêtus des mêmes habits, et, se tenant debout, lui dirent: "Rends mille actions de grâcesau grand prêtre Onias, car c'est en considération de lui que le Seigneur t'accorde la vie sauve.
34 Since you have been scourged by Heaven, proclaim to all men the majesty of God's power." When they had said this, they disappeared.	34 Quant à toi, ainsi fustigé du Ciel, annonce à tous la grandeur de la force de Dieu." Ayant ditces paroles, ils disparurent.
35 After Heliodorus had offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made most solemn vows to him who had spared his life, he bade Onias farewell, and returned with his soldiers to the king.	35 Héliodore, ayant offert un sacrifice au Seigneur et fait les plus grands voeux à celui qui luiavait conservé la vie, prit amicalement congé d'Onias et revint avec son armée auprès du roi.
36 Before all men he gave witness to the deeds of the most high God that he had seen with his own eyes.	36 Il rendait témoignage à tous des oeuvres du Dieu très grand qu'il avait contemplées de sesyeux.
37 When the king asked Heliodorus who would be a suitable man to be sent to Jerusalem next, he answered:	37 Au roi lui demandant quel homme lui paraissait propre à être envoyé une fois encore àJérusalem, Héliodore répondit:
38 "If you have an enemy or a plotter against the government, send him there, and you will receive him back well-flogged, if indeed he survives at all; for there is certainly some special divine power about the Place.	38 "Si tu as quelque ennemi ou quelque conspirateur contre l'Etat, envoie-le là-bas et il tereviendra déchiré par les fouets, si toutefois il en réchappe, car il y a vraiment pour le lieu saint une puissancetoute particulière de Dieu.
39 He who has his dwelling in heaven watches over that Place and protects it, and he strikes down and destroys those who come to harm it."	39 Celui qui a sa demeure dans le ciel veille sur ce lieu et le protège; ceux qui y viennent avec demauvais desseins, il les frappe et les fait périr."
40 This was how the matter concerning Heliodorus and the preservation of the treasury turned out.	40 C'est ainsi que se passèrent les choses relatives à Héliodore et à la sauvegarde du trésor sacré.
